Are we going to have “official” translations or do you only rely on the work done by the community?

It’s too early to say at this point. This is something we would definitely be look at, on or after final release.
Right now the localization files are changing every build. It doesn’t make sense to send them off for a professional translation when there are so many changes being made.
Well, to be honest, its a major question. Since You will start looking for official translation and we do our own translation, it could ends with our dozens of hours of work in vein while some official guy take our ideas and use it in real translation. Maybe I am stupid, but with some skills I hoped I will save you money for that translations and do something good. How will you compare unofficial/official translations to decide if you use our or their skills? TQ had a team for official translation in Czech Republic.
I would assume Crate will not commission an official translation, if the one from the community is well done and generally accepted. But if there is significant demand for a language, which there is no community translation for, then I guess they will consider to hire an translator.
Also will people continue to translate, when the expansions are released? Will there be successors, if some of the original community translators cannot complete, what they have started with?
But I cannot imagine that we will have competing translations. The reason for TQ having official translations was, that the publisher THQ provided this as a service. This time there is no external publisher.
Heh, sorry to be rude, but that is the kind of shit I want to hear.
So, generally:
- We don’t translate in vein; it would be pity to drop it - I believe our translation is great.
- Count me in with all the translations (EP included). I believe Lumeriol is so enthusiastic too.
I would expect from an official translation to feature genre support. Which means most of the community “one genre, one tense, one clause” translations, no matter how fitting/clever/practical/unfitting/dumb/weird would have to be redone.
This I consider a very distant feature, IF it even makes it in the game. Until then, people who do not speak a word of English can enjoy the game by getting the community translations. No mean feat.
I know I personally wouldn’t consider my translation to be in vein if it is scrapped and redone from an official translator, neither would it hurt my feelings, lol.
Let us wait, what the time bring us!

If Crate take our translation for the final, it were great, if not … it would be ok … for me.

It seems You have good portion of your time to do the job for three people, though. I do not personally know anybody who plays alpha or beta releases without knowing an English word, to be honest, I believe the game is very playable even you do not understand. Every game has “go there, pick up this, save those people” mechanism. And even you are correct, You will not believe there is a guy in this world who bought the alpha in English and he is now sitting and waiting for me to translate it, do You?
Considering male/female , and in Czech language 7 forms of noun is absolute basics and we push on developers to add TQ mechanism to Grim Down because our work has stopped (all translated within 14 days in 2 people including correction).
I do not think there is something funny about being afraid 50 hours of manpower is going to be scrapped.

I would love to have gender support. It’s a gear thing, and most of the translation weirdness comes from that.
People that buy into alphas and betas have adequate knowledge of the release’s language. However, fresh audience can be encouraged to take up a game that seemed daunting at first due to the overflow of visual information in a language they are not confident with.
I made the translation for such cases, and since I made it I thought it would make sense to upload it for others to be able to get it as well. Something is better than nothing.
With gender support, one could do things properly, producing a complete, thorough, polished translation. Not my field of expertise though. A professional translator with degrees and all could take the translation off my hands to do things the way they were meant to be done.
However, if I was making the game I wouldn’t shell out cash to have 8-10 translation teams, just to translate 1/3 of the game. I would first make sure it had lots and lots and lots and lots of content, while enthusiasts would “mod in” translations step by step. And then, who knows, if I hit the jackpot and people where riotting over translations I would hire 3-4 teams to cover the larger sales audience.
To sum it up. Would it be nice to have gender support, giving the opportuinity for better translation? Hell yes! Is it vital that they halt the works to implement it now? No, in my opinion. I want to be able to smash some troll heads, not check them in the tags and daydream about it!

Tags are really needed. I know it may delay progress in gameplay, but consider, we can have full and 100% translation upon release. And I think its vital. Male/female is not so important as the following:
Kovářovo boty
Kovářovy rukavice
Kovářův meč
Kovářova dýka
(Blacksmith’s Shoes, Gloves, Sword, Dagger)
Since You do not speak Czech (I suppose), You can not imagine how foolish it sounds to translate noun in one form only. This is the reason I said I would rather keep prefixes in English (because it would look very amateur and “translated-like-by-Google”).

Same problem has the guys from Polish translation team.
I’m working on the Italian translation and I’m encountering the same problem too.
Of course I’m well aware that Italian is way simpler than Czech or Polish, but without gender tags I can’t translate very well the names of the “common” items.
The problem is that adjectives in Italian take the gender of the name they are referring to, but without tags I can’t apply this basic rule and the results are pretty weird.
For example the Mystic prefix can appear on hands, legs and head armor and this categories can have male, female and plural names, so for example:
Mystic Legwraps: Ghette Mistiche (female plural)
Mystic Hood: Cappuccio Mistico (male singular)
Mystic Mask: Maschera Mistica (female singular)
Mystic Gloves: Guanti Mistici (male plural)
And the same applies for the quality of items.
It would be great to have gender tags at some point, as of now I can’t do a decent job with the translation.
Same problem for the french translation:
In english :
Death’s sword of Destiny
In french :
De la mort épée du Destin
But the TRUE translation is:
Epée du destin de la mort

You are right, I cannot speak Czech. I can however understand the frustration caused by bad grammar:). In Greek, it’s the problem that fbmtt brought up regarding Italian. You have a female adjective for a female noun.
So I chose singular neutral (so that I could use “Pair of Boots”, boots are female but pair is always neutral). After I decided on singular neutral, (which took 5 days searching for words of each genre and deciding neutral was the best compromise that described the items in the best possible way [visually as well]) I fleshed out the items and then I started on the prefix/suffix system. A parlour trick, actually. Or early-access translation.
For a literal, official translation, I agree these features are needed. It’s a matter of if and when.

Yes, this is the very same problem we have too. But its not question if and when, it should be only “when”.
I think De la mort épée du Destin is pretty good for now, we used it in Czech too. If You want to solve set items, You may use my tip, as:
Blacksmith’s Raiment: Sword
Blacksmith’s Raiment: Helm
etc. Its not looking so bad in game.

I completely agree, without tags (in general, non only for genders) the quality of the items translation just can’t be there.
I’m lucky with set items, no weirdness involved in those :D, but thank you anyway for the tip, it’s an elegant solution to the problem!

For example if I decide shield is female, do I go to the shield part of base items and translate =[fs] Ασπίδα? -
