Option.txt file issue with Win 11

Dear Devs,

This post is basically the repost of Cannot change settings with Win 11 :: Grim Dawn General Discussions

Name an issue I come with on a new laptop. The old laptop runs GD fine.
In particular, the setting doesn’t work, not reading even the file changed manually.

  1. Disabled windows defender monitoring GD, removed all antivirus software.
  2. The controlled folder access is always off and there is no blacklisted folder at all.
  3. Uninstalled OneDrive completely, doesn’t work.
  4. Manually changed the options.txt file, doesn’t work.
  5. Running the repair tool in the admin mode returns: “Your options.txt file cannot be accessed…”
  6. Checked that all relevant files are editable.
  7. Deleting “C:\Users\myusername\OneDrive\Document\My Games” allows the repair to work and recreate the options.txt file. However, still cannot make the game to access it.
  8. The “Document” folder’s name in the path is in actually Chinese, not sure if it has anything to do with the issue.
  9. All three launch options (GD, GDx64, GDx86) make no difference.
  10. Reinstalled GD once, doesn’t work.

Please let me know if there is any other information I can provide to better locate the issue. I am not the only one bugged by this.

Just to update the post. The issue of option/keybinding malfunctioning is still there, and I am not sure if this is common for Win 11. Wonder if anybody has similar problem before.

“C:\Users\myusername\OneDrive\Document\My Games” > OneDrive ?
try please
“x:\Users\x\Documents\My Games” > run gd32 bit or gd (64 bit) “run as administrator”

game run in w11pro 24h2 perfectly. no issue of option/keybinding

Thanks for the advice. However, as mentioned in the post, I am not able to change where the game reads the option from. Other games living in the one drive folder work totally fine. Creating more GD setting folders everywhere doesn’t help. I also tried running as admin and it doesn’t help. Yikes.

I may just wait until I get another device compatible with the game, which could take forever, sigh.

Move the Documents folder out of OneDrive.

Then when you want to back up your saves just do so on to an external drive of some kind like a USB key.

Great. Many thanks to the advice. The problem is solved inspired by your reply, however done in an alternative way.

My approach is just to copy the problematic folder into the desired location and then change all relevant path in the registry editor. Things seem totally fine now.

how did you change the registry ?
*just in case i can quote/reference this should the issue appear again/for someone else

Just go to windows registry editor, then search for

Computer\HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\User Shell Folders

There shall be a bunch of stuff, with a few terms corresponding to the …/OneDrive/Document folder
Then just copy the problematic document folder and replace all relevant path by the new one.
