Patching Question

So gog.com finally has patch 1.0.3.1 for Grim Dawn; when I download the patch I am unable to install it – apparently, it only works for “GOG Galaxy”, not for the downloaded version I installed. I can install game version 1.0.3.1 from scratch or I can install Galaxy. Will either or both of these procedures cause the game to rewrite over mine and hence delete my current characters?
I suppose I COULD install “gog galaxy”, but am afraid that will overwrite my current game as well. Any tips?
thanks

No, your character won’t be overwritten. If you use local saves then you can back up your character first to be on the safe side. The file is in C:\username\MyDocuments\My Games\Grim Dawn\Save\Main. It’s a good idea to do it anyway on a regular basis just in case and doesn’t take more than a few minutes to back the whole Save file up.

GOG are becoming a bit of a pain it seems. They used to provide the patches for GD without needing Galaxy. I eventually put Galaxy back on my machine since I have slow download speeds here and they don’t patch Titan Quest Anniversary Edition which I also have with GOG. It takes me hours to update because of that whereas with Galaxy they do patches for TQAE so only takes a few minutes. Now seems they’re doing the same for GD as well.

If your download speeds are slow I’d install Galaxy, if they’re quick then just install the game directly.

OK thanks. I will try to download all the files again then from gog. What a shame, I really don’t want to have yet another autostart program like Galaxy on my machine…

I can sympathise Onmastikon. I did the swap from Steam to GOG for GD when the option came up since I’m not a fan of Steam. A couple of months later I was asked if I’d like to become a playtester - which of course meant I had to put Steam back on my PC since that’s what the devs use to get the new material out to us. Go figure. Karma or something.

Karma!!

Thanks for the help. So I downloaded the big files from gog, and ran the executables, but there is no new shortcut icon, so I just activated my old one (the one I could find, still in my start menu), and all my stuff is still there (yey), but just to make sure:

  • how can I tell which version of the game I am running? I don’t see version # anywhere
  • shouldn’t there be an additional option (under “options”?) in 1.0.3.1 to enable or disable classic attack range? I just see the option for “classic targeting” which was there before, I think.
  • where should a shortcut icon to the executable be, or where would the executable itself be? It’s not in “my games”…

thank you

Version number is on the bottom right of the character screen. Should be 1.0.3.1.

You can only turn off classic targeting, there’s no option to change the range.

For GOG it should be under C:\GOG Games\Grim Dawn\Launch Grim Dawn

or if using Galaxy: C:ProgramFiles (x86)\GOG Galaxy\Games\Grim Dawn\Launch Grim Dawn

thanks! Crazy: it’s still 1.0.2.0. I updated everything, and used the direct link from the folder, but it will only launch the old game. The installation seems to have changed nothing! ARGH!

Have you extracted the files from the download? You need to extract the game’s files using WinRAR or similar and then install it. The Launch Grim Dawn is only the shortcut application, it won’t do anything about updating the game itself. For that you need the Grim Dawn application which is in the same area of your PC.

Yes, of course. The files from gog.com are executables; after “running” them, they ask if I want to “install” the files, as expected (except that unlike other installers it does not ask to browse to a location) – there are four executables (GD AoM, Loyalist, Crucible, and Patch 1.3.1), I ran them all. The launcher links to grim dawn.exe, but that was not updated through the installation, which took quite some time.

Did you save the bin files as well? I made that mistake a while ago. You need to save all the files when it asks about them.

You downloaded:

GD 1.0.3.1 Pts 1 & 2
Patch 1.0.3.1
Crucible 1.0.3.1
Ashes of Malmouth 1.0.3.1 Pts 1 & 2

Hey thanks, solved the issue with help from GOG desk – patching MUST be done with Galaxy, unless older versions (e.g. 1.0.2.0) are deinstalled first :frowning:

Um, suspected it might be down to their end of things. Yet another way to get you to use Galaxy whether you want to or not. Those people wanting DMR free games will decide to leave if they keep this up. If you’ve got to have a system put on your PC to be able to download and patch easily then you may as well use Steam.
