Question about damage sources

Hi guys new to the game here and playing a grasping vines/devour swarm/wendigo bleed based shaman.

I took all the stuff required for huntress for my bleed damage and thought about adding some other dots like the rat for bleed+poison. I then read this comment.

‘Poison damage wont be added to Black water cocktail (im guessing this applies to any spell not using poison such as grasping vines). BWC doesn’t have any poison damage on it so the % poison damage does nothing. Also the Flat poison damage will only be applied to skills that have a %weapon Damage on it.’

So does that mean because my grasping vines doesn’t do poison damage naturally, it wont apply those devotion buffs to it? Tested out on the dummies, I believe the %weapon damage thing is true, I can make the rat proc if i devouring swarm linked to the bats twin fangs as that skill itself says 15% weapon damage.

My question I guess is that, is it only true for devotion flat damage talents not applying to spells in a different school? like flat fire devotion = wont work with lightning spell. Or is it the same for items with flat damage on them?

I’ve tried equipping rares from the vendor and all the ones with flat cold/fire/poison +poison over time e.t.c actually apply to vines on the tool tip. Update- I’ve ran out of gold to buy the other elements like aether lol

So confused please help ><

If there is a flat dmg number somehwere, like on an item or a devotion point - that damage is added to your weapon damage.

Your question is quite chaotic, at least to me. Devotion procs will proc on any skill that can be bound with. So, if you bind e.g. Acid Spray to BWC, it WILL proc. However, if Rat adds poison damage, flat, and BWC doesn’t have WD (and I believe it doesn’t have that, right?), the poison damage will be ignored.

Basically, you can bind any damage type with any other damage type, as long as the skill has WD, the flat damage from anywhere will be added, and devotions will proc and will take their effect if bound to any skill and the proc requirement is executed.
