I’ve just started playing Grim Dawn, and I am one of those kind of players who wants to know how everything works, and therefore also where every damagepoint comes from.
I am playing an elementalist build, and I was looking at my damage values when I noticed something that didn’t seem right.
My main attack is “Savagery” which is at 5/16. I would expect to get the 50 lightning damage that I already have (30 from “Brute Force” times 1.654 due to the 65.4% I get from spirit), plus 25 from savagery (13 from the skill, times 65.4% from spirit added to the +28% I also get from “Savagery”, which is 13*1.93=25.09).
Then it would make sense that I deal 75 lightning damage, but instead I deal 92! I have no gear, devotion points, or other skills that would buff this, so what is happening here?
What is your % Lightning damage on the 2nd page of your character window? It sounds like it should be 0 or close to 0 if you have no gear, devotions or items but I want to be certain.
This is what I get with the information you’ve provided:
[spoiler]Well, for starters. The % Lightning damage on Savagery applies globally as long as you have one Savagery stack active (you can verify this by getting at least 1 Savagery stack and checking your character window).
So, while Savagery is active, your effective % Total Lightning damage is 65.4% + 28% = 93.4%.
For 5/12 Brute Force:
30 + 93.4% = 58.02 ~58 Lightning damage.
For 5/16 Savagery:
13 + 93.4% = 25.142 ~25 Lightning damage at max charges.
Are you sure it’s 92 and not 96?
I think it should work like this:
(30 + 13) * 1.16 * 1.934 = 96.46792 ~ 96
That is total flat damage * % Weapon damage * % damage (Spirit and Savagery)
Actually, I just realised something that ruins both calculations. Brute Force requires a two-handed melee or ranged weapon and you don’t have one equipped with no gear, so the Lightning damage it provides is moot :eek:
Are you looking at Savagery’s full damage (i.e. Lightning + Bleed) or just the Lightning part?
Are you looking at your sheet DPS (number beneath your character’s Defensive Ability) or damage per hit (damage on Savagery as LMB/RMB on the 2nd page of your character window).
I am equipped with a two-handed weapon (and I also have gear on, but none that affects it in any way, I have checked already). And yes I am sure that it is 92, that’s at least what it says on the screen.
I am looking at the lightning part exclusively (bleeding stats seem fine), and I am looking at Damage per hit.
It’s really weird how these calculations are just off by so much, considering it is computer calculated. If the consensus is that it should be 96, but really is 92, is the conclusion then that every calculation is plus/minus 5-10, because that is just ridiculous.

I’ve done the math on several of my stats, and it seems like almost all of them are of by 5-10 points. I don’t get it.
So when I use “Savagery” it gives me a certain boost in lightning damage (28%), which means that my lightning damage goes from 50 to 58. Now take that and multiply it with 1.16 (%main hand damage). That gets me to 67.28. Now the final piece is to add the additional 25 lightning damage that Savagery also gives you, and you end up with 92.28!
The miscalculation happened when we added the 25 “Savagery” lightning points to my main lightning damage, before we multiplied with 1.16, and not after.
Strange, I’d think that Lightning damage from Savagery should also add to your weapon and be multiplied but I guess it doesn’t? I think the one thing I can take from this is that Savagery or any of the multi-charge skills never make sense .
That does yes. Weapon damages for replacers and WPS get multiplied (except Cadence for obvious reasons, Cadence + Execution would result in monstrous levels of % Weapon Damage).
Now that you mention it, you’re right. Flat damage on skills like Forcewave, Rending Force etc. don’t add to your weapon. For some reason, I always saw the flat damage on default replacers differently.
