Retaliation Dots and new %retaliate damage added to attack question

So I am doing a retaliate warlord build for the forgotten gods expansion and I hadnt been back since they fiddled with the retaliation damage abilites and such. So my question is when it says it adds a percentage of your retaliate damage does that include things like bleed/trauma/other dots? or is it just the flat damage such as physical, fire, vitality etc.

So the way Retaliation added to attack works is, it takes all of your retaliation damage, no matter the source, modified by retaliation damage bonuses, then adds it to your attack, so if you have bleed retaliation, you attack takes part of that damage and adds it, as bleed, to the attack, same with IT, Poison, etc.

addendum: any retaliation damage is also subject to conversion IE: you have 1000 flat phys and 50% physical damage converted to fire, you now have 500 fire retal and 500 phys retal

Ahh okay wasnt sure, thank you for the clarification

Your example confuses me:

Is this conversion only for %->attack, or does global conversion now convert base retaliation, as well?

its honestly pretty simple, at least to me. any conversion from items or buffs that affect the damage you’re converting is also likewise affecting retaliation damage. For example:

say you have Blazeseer Signet ( https://www.grimtools.com/db/items/7908 ) which is 20-30% vitality converted to fire and you also have a Spectral War Shield ( https://www.grimtools.com/db/items/8814 ) which has Vitality Retaliation, that retaliation damage gets converted to fire before %retaliation damage and before it gets added into Retaliation added to Attack, same for any physical damage converted to X element conversions

It’s not the active %retaliation part that I find confusing…but it almost sounds like you are saying that when an enemy hits me, the % conversion is active there as well. I didn’t think the passive retaliation was affected by conversion.

In this example, does the enemy that hits me take 20-30% converted fire retaliation damage from the pure vit retal? Because, if so, that opens up retaliation to a whole new level of damage type tailoring.

yes conversion affects retaliation, not just Retaliation Added to Attack. you can with the right setup (like this one here: https://www.grimtools.com/calc/vNQrXLj2 ) you can convert 100% of vitality to fire damage, both vitality damage from skills, and things like vitality retaliation on the spectral shield, which then gets added into Drain Essence thanks to the shields skill mod that adds Retaliation Added to Attack

Ok, so one more question on retal conversion to attack.

@the8anarchist or anyone who can answer:

What’s the specific order for this retaliation conversion for %retal->attack?

I assume it is much like a typical skill order:

  1. skill conversion applied to all flat retaliation
  2. global conversion applied to remaining unconverted flat retaliation
  3. retaliation %bonus added to flat
  4. percent of retaliation calculated for the ret->atk

Because, you know, conversion only can happen once…so this is why I ask to know.

Question here:
e.g.
Say if I have 8000 flat acid retaliation damage, and retribution adds 10% retal to attack.
So the 10% works as pure acid damage adds to attack or retaliation damage??
Totally in a haze now.
