I feel like something that might help games progress is the ability to create remote town outposts where you set up some housing and industry away from your main town. Sometimes it’s a crap shoot if you truly get a good initial spot on your map. It would be nice to be capable to find a place on your map with maybe some mines and a megarock that was not viewable initially. What this would require to work is the ability to set up some wainwright routes to carry resources to and from these outposts. Maybe you need to upgrade the wagon shops to get this ability. I feel it could help some maps progress.
The choice to build outposts is totally up to the player. You’re correct with the wagons and this may limit how much you can depend on the outposts being efficient.
I find the wagons to be fickle. Sometimes they will move resources from one stockyard to another, but too many times I see them moving to a far away stockyard with no cargo, arrive, turn around back to town, with no cargo!
I wonder if you built a Wainwright at the outpost, along with storage, if the wagons would stock it since it is “home” to them? I think I am going to give that a whirl and see what happens. First without storage, to see if the wagons still bring supplies back, and then a later build the storage facility.
