So I'll admit that I was a bit ambivalent about FF

But, now that it’s here, I’m really impressed with the work the team has done. Keep it up guys!

I’m not happy with it, I’ve mostly written it off at this point in time. I will check it out some day again in the future when they have fixed stuff. After trying a few different seeds; my people all die every time. Creating food is very hard and very based on map location and ground makeup which is really a poor mechanic when it is the basis of the entire settlement…

I had all my people die, once. I learned not to do that again, and build them shelter straight away every time now. I’ve started dozens of towns and spent 500 hours in the game in the past month, I’m still learning. I’ll admit some of it is learning what the game’s doing that it shouldn’t be doing, as well as what people would do ‘in the wild’, or shouldn’t. I always keep in mind that I’m playing a game, ie I’m playing with a game. You learn the limitations within a game of Monopoly in much the same way, except this game takes a lot more brain cells to play with.

How, exactly? You can build hunters huts and forager shacks before your town center is up, and two or three foragers alone will support your village for a few years.

You can use overlays like Fertility (F) and Irrigation (I) to figure out where you want to start based on how the map is treating it, if you start near water it’s practically free food. The F4 widget will let you see the specific amount of resources before you place the town center.

Creating food is very hard and very based on map location

But the farms can be put anywhere and brought up to 100% fertility if you use the mechanics. Orchards, too, at tier 2.

Well my hunters never catch anything and the forager shacks also seem to be useless… I tried 5 different games and between the 5 different games my hunters had 2 catches and foragers picked up 1 of something… The farmland is terrible; nobody wants to work it so it often takes more than a year for the land to be prepared… even when I assign people they still don’t seem to care. IT has been very frustrating… I haven’t made it to tier 2 because the longest game I had going barely lasted an hour before everyone starved… The other thing is that when the farm is done you have about 10 seconds before you miss the first season of planting, which is just insane.
I have lots of experiences with other city builders and micro managing different aspects of the economy but this is a whole other level.
As far as the overlays; not every part of the map is revealed? So I can’t just pick anywhere I want, I have to re-roll. So it seems that the only way to make this work is to re-roll constantly until I end up near water?

Have you checked streamers on Youtube ? Because I don’t see how your people can starve.
For instance, I don’t use crop fields until a few years have passed, only hunters, fishermen and foragers.

I even did a map (vegetarian) where I only used foragers and survived (and I only play vanquisher). Admittedly, it’s harder but no one starved.

The circle for hunters can be moved to a location where you have a “dear” icon. Limit to 1 hunter per “dear” icon to avoid killing them all.
Same for fishermen, you can move the circle and don’t use too many on a single lake or you’ll remove all the fish.

In addition to the fishermen and hunters, the forager also has its own work area. I have managed to get a forager collecting 7 of the 8 collectibles, of which 5 were at a positive 3 level.

I also struggled on maps without water for a while because relied on fish that much, but 2-3 foragers and 1-2 hunters gets me up to 20 months of food around 35 villagers. I even often expand out to waters so eventually get fish too.

I will have to try again and do some more re-rolls. I didn’t have luck with foragers or hunters and have never rolled a place that was near water. Usually even my wells run dry so I need like 3 or 4 with only 18 villagers because even the ones in “high water supply” area seem to run dry.

what? creating food is easy…

You can’t have wells too close together, it’ll drain the aquifer. I think you need to see the game on a much longer timescale, it feels you’re expecting things to happen too quickly, which I did a lot to begin with, I had to slow my expectations down, go easy on the poor little npcs. It’s exactly that long slowburn which makes the game so satisfying, I promise you it’s worth perservering, yes it’s hard, but that’s a good thing. Watch some YT videos to see the scale and timescale, you’ll be glad.

I’m just not expecting all my people to die in the first hour >.<

Like I mentioned above; I’ll try it again with some more re-rolls and try to be near a stream for fishing and hopefully that works out.

Yeah something is not right. I’ve not encountered any of the issues you’re describing and I play on vanquisher and sometimes on low food availability map seeds. Have you maybe tried verifying your game files on steam?

I installed it on 2 computers independently and had the same issues… my foragers and hunters like I mentioned above typically didn’t have any finds or catches… One level (the last one I tried) had 2 foragers and 3 hunters… all well spaced. they all got NOTHING over an entire year and eventually we ran out of food :frowning:

Do you use the retarget work radius button?

You should be able to see icons on the ground that denote the type of resources, and when mousing over them with this selected it shows what they will gather in that area. Just left click to set it where you want

Yep, I did that in the last game as well… Will retry this week as its been a month since I tried to play it.

Something tells me jimster is not setting his work radius for his hunters around a deer spawn. Ive never had hunters NOT hunt their target at game start.

This is how you really play the game, I do this on Vanquisher and with the best timing T2 can be achieved around 4 years.

Huh? I’m not sure what this is related to?

Careful to not put your wells too close to each other. Otherwise they have a decreased replenishment.
When placing a well, if an other one turns blue, then you’re building too close.

Just started playing yesterday …and yes i have no problem creating food also…make sure you have a smoker shack to cure your deer and fish
