Bought the game last evening,
got to level 10 without realizing I couldnt choose a class and the first kill mob quest wasnt spawning.
Check the steam forums sure enough GD is not compatible with Proton and the anti piracy kicks in.
Now valve wont refund my money and I have a game where it thinks is pirated since is running under proton on my steam linux client.
Was hoping I can speak to a support person and see if I can get the GOG version since I already paid for the game supposedly works really well on non-steam version.
I have all the transactions when I paid for the game.
That would be on Crate to decide I suppose but not sure that works out in their favor. You’d still have access to the Steam version plus you would then have a second copy completely free since they have no way to remove it from your Steam account. Hmm.
And you probably shouldn’t buy games for Proton just because Proton exists. That’s not a free ride guaranteeing a game is going to work, especially one Valve hasn’t even whitelisted.
Did you actually try to contact Valve and attempt to explain the situation? They just might refund you anyway in light of the issue.
Yes am stuck and Valve wont refund the funds since I was over the 2 hour limit…I want to play this game LOL but there is no work around yet for proton without trigerring the anti piracy
Might wanna double check then… some people in the Linux guide thread were posting recently with problems running GD with Steam Wine. Valve might be doubling down on borking things.
I’m not using Steam’s version of Wine. Just tested it and, @ 1st, it wasn’t letting me log on but i managed to get it done. Played like 10 minutes or so with my main char (lvl 100 blademaster), with no apparent issues.
Hadn’t played Steam’s GD version since 08-17-18: longer than i thought.
When I say Steam Wine… I mean exactly that. Steam thru Wine (or Wine-steam Linux articles often denote it as, same thing either way). Not Proton (also known as Steam Play at times, much easier now to differentiate it simply as Proton). You were responding in the thread the other day to the two that were having issues with exactly that The game had obviously worked prior to this point for them, no problems, then out of the blue, working no longer. I imagine they will find it very curious that you are having no such issue.
Maybe you can give them better insight then because they were back to back, one reported the problem and the other went to test as well and experienced the same issue getting the game to run.
Dunno how OP installed his but it seems he did it with Proton, since he mentions it. Since i’ve never done it myself (so far), i’m unable to help with that.
My 1st reply in this topic links the guides i use to install the game, both with Steam and with GOG, but it has been a while since i last did that: perhaps OP should try installing and running Steam’s version of the game in that way?
Yes, the OP of this thread is in fact using Proton, he even bought GD expressly because of the existence of Proton, somewhat foolishly believing, well, I don’t know what he believed but it was a rather odd thing to do with no confirmation that the game was even supported by Valve yet in that aspect.
(GD and Proton currently do not work correctly, it (Proton) seems to trigger GD’s anti-piracy measures in the Steam version of the game, thus gimping the game. This is actually well known at the moment).
Yeah, as far as I know Crate couldn’t technically refund it. I mean they could if they wanted to be super nice but there is no way they could guarantee the game would be removed from his account unless they managed to get Valve in the mix somehow. Just the way it would work I would think considering that Steam is the storefront which then pays out to the devs.
By all accounts tho Valve is not easy to get ahold of for tech/customer support, no matter whether you’re an actual dev or a paying customer. Or at least that’s what I’ve read. They’re all about the automation these days.
I was one of those people. Just attempted to launch it from Steam (through Wine) again and same thing, just Crate logo and locks up. Worked fine as of a week ago or so.
Sounds like something Steam has done is causing problems, because as Zantai said a little while ago in response to Linux problems, there hasn’t been an update of the game in months - back in May was the last in fact. So if it worked fine a week or so ago and isn’t now, then something must have happened when Steam updated.

And i spoke too soon: just tried it again and the screen goes black … and stays black … sound plays fine, indicating it should be in the Menu but the image is black, and i tried multiple times.

How do you change which version you run? I get no menu where this is selectable
You should be able to force it thru launch options. Right-click GD in Steam Library. Select Properties. Select Set Launch Options. In the input field type: /d3d9
Edit: oh crap, sorry. See that you were responding to his inquiry in regards to GoG. Not 100% sure how to do the same there but I would think it would be modifying some kinda launch options.
