Suggest me a first and (possibly) last character build

Hello dear community, my name is Peter and here is the deal with me.

I am a long time avid fan of various Diablo cloning games, but TQ:IT was by far my favorite. The thing is that these days I don’t have the time to replay these type of games and grind them for gear, neither do I have the time to re-roll a character if it didn’t work out. So I need help from experienced Grim Dawn players to create one character and beat the game with it.

What I am looking for is a character build recommendation that can get me from level 1 to level 85. The things I want to be able to do:

*kill every boss and progress through every area in the game without dying 10 times
*the build must NOT rely on specific gear, unless said gear is guaranteed to drop from a quest
*have a reasonable AoE clear speed, as well as single target
*not a button masher - i really can’t handle more than 4 active skills, unless they are temporary buffs in boss fights. Ideally a LMB autoattack + 1-3 active skills for general usage, since I have 4 buttons on my mouse (LMB, RMB, 2 more on the side)

Some extra notes:

Ranger/Spellcaster/Melee are all OK
Pets are OK, as long as the character can actively participate himself with skills

So, yeah. If you’ve stumbled upon a build that can fit these criteria please share it with me. I will gladly appreciate it!

Mousewheel up and mousewheel down are two more buttons in this game…

You want a char which basically can do everything from 1-85 without dying and without relying on specific gear … does this not seem weird for an rpg which is loot based?

I finished Legendary in TQ: IT with two entirely self-found characters - a Spirit/Nature pet build and a Spirit/Rogue staff user and I was pretty close to also beating it with a Hunter/Nature bow user as well. So I don’t think my request is unreasonable…

Without specific gear simply means that the character build should not rely on one obscure piece of gear that has 0,0001% chance of dropping in order to function.

Good luck !

Hi Peter from TQ:IT,

I understand your request and I hope to help you.

My current toon is a Warder (Soldier+Shaman).

Here is the calc with devotion, it is not min-max and the good thing is that you can easily tweak between offense/defense.

The build focuses on physical and bleed damage. It’s a close range “caster”. You find a great 2H axe and you ForceWave through everything.

Here is a small description of the main active skills used in every fight:

  • ForceWave: main attack, small range, but still range so always avoid being surrounded and avoid a lot of hit. + Assasin’s mark to reduce physical resistance.
  • Grasping Vines: Great AOE slow/root that proc a lot of Falcon Swoop (the second DPS skill, that shotgun nicely at close range)
  • Devouring Swarm: Debuff skill, reduce a lot the bleeding resistance + Huntress Rend to further reduce the bleeding resistance.
  • Wind Devil: just to proc Oleron’s Blind Fury away from you. BF is great damage and nice debuff

Skills used in difficult situation (if any  ):

  • Wendigo Totem: For adcth (attack damage converted to health) and boost of bleeding damage
  • War Cry: “oh shit” button.

You also have:

  • Briarthorn that give you nice boost in offense and defense (at least if it shout at the right time grmblblbl).

Finally you can juggle with the skill point repartition in Fighting Spirit / Field Command / Military Conditioning / Heart of the Wild / Blood Pact

About the gear:
Do as you like. I suggest you to boost your armor, your resistances and use a BF axe.

Attribute point repartition:
Do as you like. I suggest you to at least put 30 points in physic to be able to wear most of heavy armors.

Hope it helps.

Warder sounds like the think I am looking for, but how is physical damage in Grim Dawn? I remember that is had some problems in TQ:IT, as everything had a lot of armor.

Up to now (Ultimate act1), no problem with that for 2 reasons:

  1. The build I proposed has a lot of reduce armor and reduce phys resistance.
  2. You are not 100% phys, there is bleeding damage (with lot of bleeding res reduction) and also a lot of internal trauma damage which is not reduced by armor (If I remember correctly).
