Suggestion for a new NPC: A Witch

I have been looking for an interesting game for many years, a game which allows me to play for long with unpredictable outcomes and setups (and allow me to play offline). And I finally found it, Grim Dawn. Such a great game, I give much love and respect for the developers.

I am still at my first character, Druid lvl 85 in Ultimate mode, just open the Fort Ikon rift. I am currently at the 160th hour of gameplay, not so much compared to other dedicated gamers with thousands of gaming hours.

I’ve just give thought to a new NPC because I got frustrated of doing repetitive chore: going around to find what I have in mind but the game doesn’t know what I want. As a result, I have random legendary and epic items or repeated items while the only thing I want is just an epic shoulder. So I cheated, to get that epic shoulder, which made me a little sad because I don’t want to cheat and ruin the unexpected aspect of the game. But if I don’t do so, I don’t know when I can get what I want, a month or maybe even a year… while I have the transfer box already full of items that I intend to use them for my next characters.

A Witch: with magic power, clairvoyant and blessing ability.

He/She is an outcast, living outside in the forest. If you want something and you don’t know where to find it, you will come to see the Witch. You need to have at least one item of the set so that you know what you are looking for.

After showing the item to the Witch (and give her some money), he/she will show you the rest of the set. You will have 2 option: paying for the blessing on the item (better chance to get it) or use magic/clairvoyant to get it.

For the blessing, you just need to pay iron (5k up to 50k…). But for magic/clairvoyant, you need to submit organic things (tainted brain, ancient heart, manticore eye, blood or someone’s head,…) and/or part of your soul (skill point) and/or a lot of iron bits.

If you have asked for magic/clairvoyant on the wanted item, the Witch will tell you where to find it (and/or to kill certain bosses), it can be on the map or hidden places with treasure chests. Or the Witch will open a rift to some random small places that are not on the main map.

The Witch will either tell you the place the wanted item resides or he/she will tell you: “this item no longer exists in this world, but the blueprint of how to craft it still does exist. You need to come to [someplace] to kill [someone/something] to achieve it”.

After you achieve the blueprint, you would need to go around to find components and/or sub-items to craft what you want (and to collect things to sell for iron bits). And to get these sub-items, you maybe need to come back to the Witch to ask for them or their blueprints.

At default, the Witch always has information about relics’ blueprints (revealing to you according to your level), and you only need to spend money to acquire information about how to get those relics’ blueprints. And for items, as being said, you need to have one part of the set.

With this new NPC (a necessary role in the medieval world), you will have things to spend money on and have many side quests to complete without doing repetitive things and gaining nothing. And now you need to collect literally everything to sell for money, not just epic or legendary items.

About the current Grim Dawn, I have more than 2.5 million iron bits and have no place to spend on or gamble on for some random unidentified items with some smugglers. And I’m still missing a wanted transcendent relic blueprint with nowhere to find it but rely on the game mechanic: Chance. With this new NPC, I believe the game will be more enjoyable without making you spend less time on the game.

And one more thing, I would like to see the Witch with an esoteric ability: Reincarnation.

The leveling up process is fun and well when you still enjoy the game’s story (which is excellent in Grim Dawn). So after spending more than 100 hours with the first character to level up to max level and explore the story 3 times (normal, elite and ultimate), I don’t want to start a new character from scratch and spend another 100 hours just to get to lvl 75 to wear all the items I have collected from my first character.

So the Witch with Reincarnation ability will help you be able to reincarnate into another young man/woman who is currently dead, so you can restart a new life with lvl 75 with total attribute and skill points accordingly. And to reincarnate, you need to complete the main story on ultimate mode and have at least 5 million iron bits. From this new start, you won’t have to endure the boring leveling-up process but to explore more about creating and finishing your build, to go around finding random items for your next characters and achieve shrine’s points for another celestial system setup.

And the game will have a new window, called: “Reincarnation Tree”. It will display all your past lives with all the information and achievement, and it will look like your character window with all the items and animated character in the middle so that you can look upon and take pride in your effort.
If you take off all your items before Reincarnation, you will appear naked in the Reincarnation Tree. Why would you do that, right? Basically, the build you have for one character is fixed on that character, I wouldn’t like to take off some items and transfer them to another character.

That is all I have for now, I hope this is a good idea to share.

If it’s taking you 100 hours to reach max level, something’s wrong. It’s doable in 20. For a first character, maybe 40-60.

As for the theme of the NPC itself…

A Witch: with magic power, clairvoyant and blessing ability.

He/She is an outcast
You know there’s an NPC called The Outcast who’s a clairvoyant witch with some pretty useful items, right?

Yeah, maybe I am still on my first character to explore the game and read stuff, so I am not aware of how fast I will get to max level. So my opinion is biased, sorry about that.

I like the NPC called The Outcast but she just gives quests and sells some stuff (or doing something more I dont know?). I believe most players dont often buy item from faction (except for augmentation stuff and blueprints) but like to use epic or legendary item found on the road.

There’ll be a whole coven of witches in the expansion, but they won’t be doing what you ask for. And you will be able to respec your class, BUT only down to one point in each of the masteries, i.e. you cannot change your class only reallocate the points into whatever skills in the two masteries you want. Complete respec to get a totally new class will never happen in the game.

In my first character, I respec a lot, up until now for every one point unlearned I have to pay 15 000 bits. It happens because of the items I get overtime, from close-up melee character I changed it into a caster. I think from the second character forward, I dont need to respec because I have known the game more.

I imagined an idea to share, not really ask for it :D. Because I work in the 3D industry and understand the hard work and complication, so just hope everyone keeps up the good work.

Is it wrong to not rush from A to B to get to the end as quickly as possible? That power leveling style of play does not suit everyone. Also it seems this is another long timer perspective on the game. When every nook and cranny is known, and every dynamic and mechanic is understood, you might be right. 20 hours. First starting and wanting to explore everything it easily took 10 to get to the warden, and that is not counting all the restarts due to an un-intuitive build process that relies heavily on knowing things about items and processes you can’t possibly know about yet. Took me 100 hours easily to push past Arkovia/Undercity with a character I was satisfied and having fun with and who wasn’t gimped by poor point distribution and item selection.

wwtchhntr you are 100% right. One of my friends took a month to reach the Warden. :stuck_out_tongue:

People who rush to Ultimate simply spent a lot of time (years) on the game and are now more interested in trying a new build rather than doing all the secondary quests, fully exploring the map, or reading all the dialogues.

No, there’s nothing wrong about that for players that want to explore and take their time through the game, of which I would encourage new players to do. However, if you’re making suggestions to shorten the leveling process because you don’t want to have to explore everything again, then don’t expect to need to. Hence why the 20hr thing is viable, and I wouldn’t even think it’s hard for newer speed demons to do better than that.

Biggest time saver in later runs is gear I think. Having a collection of epics and nicer rares with low or no level makes the next play through much quicker.

The one thing I wish they would do is make the explorer gear available at level 14 instead of 20-22. That would be the simplest tweak with a huge impact on leveling new characters and getting through Act 1 quicker in later runs. And more people would take the time to see how powerful this little set is. I think it can be a viable build all by itself.

With Crucible 10 Devotion Point (getting your Devotion faster might make even more difference than your gear since you can cover one side (either Offense or Defense) quite well will bring your character around level 19. The first series of quest will give you the 20 you need for Explorer Set. Placing it at 14 (lowest level for Epic) would probly means it is a bit weaker and won’t to get a bit further with that set.

Honestly Gazer Man + 2 pieces of Explorer brought me all the way to level 50 with my last 2 character (20 level in Crucible and than 21 to 50 with Gazer/Explorer) and it was really fast.

Still I have now 900 hours in the game and I just did start copying some character to test build (Mostly I did build an Arcanist Solo Mastery death-free up to 68 with 100% Normal/Elite (in term of Quest) completed) I just did copy him to make one a Warlock and the other a Calidor Tempest user (still unsure if it will be Battlemage or Sorcerer yet)

I also did copy my Commando to have 1 Justicar Forcewave and 1 Warborn Cadence guy.

I did max 8 characters already I guess I can save some time with the Normal/Elite now.

Id see no need to nerf it since you can’t have it on your first run anyway. By the time you get it (without item hacking) you’ve already done the run a few times and the whole point of it is that it make you so op in the early levels getting through them is a breeze.

Yeah i think i took it to about level 40 in campaign before it was feeling aged but I didn’t really see all the ways you could buff the armor and the character to extend its life at the time.

My thought is that the base buff to all the resistances and defenses means you can rethink how you use components/augments/devotions, plus 7 other slots to pad your armor. Im thinking solder/shaman for the defensive bonuses and basing it on The Huntsman and Farmstead Liberator for bleeding and focusing on entrapment/disabling skills.
