Suggestion for Toggled Skills(Quality of Life)

So, I just got Grim Dawn, and I am loving it so far. However, I would love to suggest a new feature for aura skills and other toggled abilities. What if, when a player activates a toggled skill, a visual effect is added to the skill icon to in the hotbar? Even with the aura icons displaying above the health bar and the toggled energy effect, I find it hard to know whether or not my skills are on. A good example of this effect can be seen in another ARPG, Path of Exile(see attached). If anyone would like more illustrations to better understand my point, please reply. To admins and development staff, thank you for your time in advance!

I played PoE from the start of the closed beta and I’m rather baffled by the idea that having a small icon that always showing changing in colour is more noticeable than having the buff icon either visibly showing above the skills / health bar or not showing :undecided:

Rather than check to see what colour it currently is… the icon either exists (on) or it doesn’t exist at all (off) and I personally find it much clearer to understand whether a buff is on or off with the icon showing or not showing at all :wink:

Icon Showing = skill on

No Icon = skill off

Edit… Just to add some players (myself) use the 2nd hotkey bar (Press Y to toggle between) to keep the auras and other active toggled skills, thus leaving the 1st hotkeys for the skills being fired off, so this idea would be no use in this situation as you don’t see both bars at once :wink:

I’m with Jaknet. Having a skill icon showing up as being on and gone as being off is much better than the icon just changing colors.

Unless you are in multiplayer where Icon Showing means someone’s skill is on and you have to go stand in a corner away from other players to see if it is yours.

As I already complained about in another post this would be much less of an issue if skills with an energy maintenance cost didn’t cancel when you don’t have enough energy.

I am surprised no one else complains about it, it is about as dumb as removing a skill from the toolbar if you try to use it without enough energy.
It takes two mouse clicks to put a skill back on the tool bar - it takes me 3 mouse clicks (toolbar swap) to recast an aura.

Maybe no-one else has complained because no-one else has had this problem ?? None of my energy reserved skills/auras cancel when I run out of energy.

Which specific skills are you on about and can you reproduce the results…after verifying the game files and are you using any mods, or has this char been modded/ tweaked/adjusted in anyway at all with any tool ?

I said skills with energy maintenance costs for example

Maiven’s sphere
Ward of Illusion
Flame Touched
Vindictive Flame

happens all the time when beam skills AAR and Conflagration drain your energy. Other skills probably have a narrower timing window where casting will leave insufficient energy for the next aura ‘tick’.

is it only with these 2 skills that they turn off ??

Perhaps I’m just a huge weirdo. I dunno, I would just like something telling me that a toggled skill is on other that the buff bar.

It isn’t only those skills but it is quite hard and perhaps impossible with some other skills. For example Devastation on one of my characters needs about 400 energy. If I mash the key to cast it as soon as I have enough energy it casts but the energy bar doesn’t go below about 25, seems to regenerate about 25 energy during the time it draws the 400. That character’s maintained auras need 18 energy/second. I mashed all the other keys on that character and managed to cancel the auras but it took a while. Hold down the mouse button for AAR and the energy bar goes down to low single digits and the auras cancel - every time, even Vindictive Flame which only has a 0.5 energy/second cost.

If a mod thinks this is more a bug than annoying feature then feel free to move last few posts to a new bug thread.

Good idea! Simple to code it’s a nice feature.

Anything with Energy Reservation or a Cost/Second will be deactivated when you run out of Energy. Not a bug.

Then how come IEE doesn’t need to be re-cast when running out of energy, as it’s an energy reserved skill and Fluffy is saying they have to re-cast all their skills every time they run out of energy…and it doesn’t seem to turn off either ???

Only skills with a per second cost in my experience and if it isn’t a bug it is an annoying as hell feature.

I have more regeneration per second than the cost per second so it is a pretty reasonable argument to say I can’t ever run out of energy.

Lots of ways to ‘fix’ it. Cast skills could leave a reserve big enough to cover one maintenance tick.

You could let energy go negative from maintenance ticks, meaning you will just have to wait a little longer for enough energy to cast whatever skill.

Maintenance cost ticks could be synchronised with regeneration ticks effectively implementing the maintenance cost as a reduction in regeneration.

The auras could just be turned off for the tick that couldn’t be paid for instead of being cancelled.
