Suggestions for new Environment and Underground Art Sets

I like to think that the bad guys arrived somehow. That arrival and their subsequent presence ruined a big portion of landscape. Like after an eruption at Yellowstone type ruined. You could even mix in a bit of Pompeii style catacombs on the outskirts. Then big wasted outdoor region that goes in and out of caves and caverns of underground. And instead of red lava, make it black.

I would really like a setting with the following features:

Imagine an old city with the architecture similar to the french quarters in new orleans and the classic buildings of cuba, haiti and such. I’m talking old school colonialism.

The town is abandoned, which means nature is taking over (think of the images of “earth without humans”)

Offcourse we would need an old half sunken steam wheeler

Maybe just as an inspiration to the setting, but even greater if it would be possible to enter it offcourse

The nature surrounding this town could be some combination of the bayou of the south and caribbean… True blood captures parts of it nicely imo.

I hope you see where this is going, this is classic voodoo-land
A splash of color in an otherwise mostly grim and gloomy world. But just because the old worn down houses once was painted with every color on the palette, it doesn’t mean that this is somewhere you would want to be. There’s a reason many horror movies takes place out in the southern wilderness. It’s creapy by nature

Offcourse, a setting like this would also open the door for some gnarly voodoo witches and monsters :stuck_out_tongue:

I like the idea of a less visible area, like mist or smoke. An idea I have is a forest fire environment like with the olive farm @ the spider boss in TQ. There would be smoke that gives less visibility, trees on fire, smoldering charcoal every where and a lot of fire enemies. Already made assets could be reused and altered. There could even be a human faction that thinks they should set the world on fire to cleanse it of evil. They would be like these crazy half naked people with fire scars all over there body that have powerful fire magic/weapons/alchemy. It would be fun to be able to choose if you’ll kill them for the damage they are causing or help them to spread the fire to extra-dimensional portals. Showing those extra-dimensional beings that we have some devastating elements in our dimension to.

The mist idea would be fun with some sneaky enemies that would use guerilla tactics and could be incorporated with any already made environment.

I love all the other concepts given already, it’s going to be hard to choose.

I’d like to see a mountain railroad environment. It fits the Victorian setting like a glove and as far as I know, no other arpgs have done it. An abandoned railroad far up in the mountains, running across treacherous bluffs, through tunnels and along raging rivers.

A mountain like Mt Huashan would be really interesting too, It’s not like people are foreign to narrow corridors in dungeons, so why not outside in a rather fresh environment?

And it seems that I am not allowed to post links so you will have to make do without pictures. Huashan is easy to find, search for Nilgiri mountain and Kalka Shimla railway for an example of the railroads.

That’s a cool idea…something similar to the railroad/carriage scene in Bram Stokers Dracula

Mentioned this before but some of my favorite parts of TQ is where they used elevation to create really awesome scenes…a dark mountain railroad/road would allow them to leverage this perfectly.

Without stealing art styles but I like the look of this.

Small islands with just enough room for a house, or a shop, with bridges and shallow water to cross.

BTW so many great ideas in this forum I would like to see all of these lands.

If you want some inspiration, don’t look further then Opuszczone.com, which is a polish website about abandoned buildings. There’s a metric ton of pictures of such locations, with interiors, outeriors and nature around them. Unfortunately on the english version, the search engine is busted. So, i’ll post a few pics of what i think might be an excellent creepy spot in the game. Think of the day-night visual possibilities!

Without further ado, i present to you an abandoned Mental Hospital!:

Imagine this place at night… and how much you wouldn’t want to be there!

I highly recommend browsing through other galleries too. Old buildings, abandoned factories and military facilities.

I’ve been monitoring the progress of this game for years, first time I’ve ever fealt moved to contribute (except during the kickstarter but I couldn’t afford a penny at the time)

In the Hades chapter of TQIT you proved that you’re more than willing to bend the rules of geometry to make a level fun. What about dungeons designed to resemble R’lyeh or Eschers’ Stairs? Passing through doors could turn the player on his side, so creatures or other players show up on the walls.

Going on the theme of lovecraftian horror, you mentioned a possible snow theme. What about blending organic rock with masonry like in the mountains of madness?

I think the inside of a gigantic monster would be a cool environment. A purely organic environment would be cool.

Love this idea, seems popular too; what about blending organic life with architecture? Monsters could include the walls themselves bursting into life or rubble piles standing and revealing itself to be the shell of some superzombie or something (can’t find a picture for this, weird)

In the south of Quebec we have a kind of famous asylium for children that was used during Duplessis reign over Quebec in the 40’s. There was some sort of corruption going on between the Church and the Governement in a way that they picked childrens with minor problems or even simply orphans and put them in the asylium where they were abused and pretty much tortured by the priests there. This gave birth to the Duplessis Orphans, who are still today, claiming that Justice should be done to those priest and the church in general.

I went with a couple of friends at night to the old asylum which is many buildings including a indoor pool, a old gymnasium and cells everywhere. It was really scary.
Imagine a place like this with childrens ghosts around.

I wonder if its possible to do a castle/ruin thats is heavily corrupted with those crystals. It would be the kind of place where alot of the initial structure is actualy being oferwhelmed and the corruption is so strong that some rooms you enter affect your character like poison draining your health until you leave that room/chamber.

it could be that your character was sent in to investigate the rapid growth of the curruption and to find a way to stop it from spreading much further.

So much suggestions and pictures, and even ideas. You guys at Crate got your work cut out.

Hmmm I was thinking an open air Souk or Bizarre. They can be quite colorful, varied and maze-like at times.

Been lurking about after supporting the Kickstarter (too lazy to set up an account :stuck_out_tongue: ) but I had to chime in and add some suggestions to the long list of really great ideas here so far:

How about a mysterious floating citadel to explore:

As a big Lovecraft fan, I also agree with people who have suggested an area like the Ch’thonic Void. This is can be a uniquely unsettling and memorable location if done right. The closest visual guide I can give is some of Steve Ditko’s work for Dr. Strange:

Keep up the great work guys! I’m really excited to see what makes it to the polls.

Hmm. Apparently my floating citadel image didn’t connect properly.
Here we go:

Definitely an underground city/town would be a favourite idea for me. I’m thinking vaguely along the lines of the Secret Passage area in TQ. Every time I visit it I wish I could explore all the buildings you guys put in there. Also somewhere like Petra in an area that once used to be a populated and busy place, but due to war/environmental changes, etc, has been long abandoned.

Instead of underground areas and such…why not portals to entirely new domains/realms such as dungeons and dragons with the shadowfell or something similar.

How about a vast biological graveyard setting where the fungi cause the dead to rise or corrupt the minds of the living. The enemies could be simple pre-existing creatures with small fungus themed textures added to them. The mushrooms themselves could come in many varieties of colors from dull to vibrant and could even inflict a variety of debuffs or even buffs to the player. The interesting thing is that this place could start off of a simple quest and begin by looking very vibrant and pretty into something more dark and twisted or even vice avers where you are discovering a oasis of the mushroom graveyard. The insane thing is the fact that there does exist a fungus in real life that controls ants like zombies… for further reading please consult this link.

For an environment theme, I’d like to see something volcanic. This would be for both above ground and underground.

This could include things like red hot lava, sulphur vents, lava tubes (for underground), boiling mud, bubling acidic lakes, old lava flows (black barren rock), cave leading to a chamber with boiling lava, geyser. Some of these things could also be used to hurt the player…don’t stand infront of the volcanic vent.

Here’s the sort of thing I was thinking about:
White Island in NZ

Rotorua, NZ

Lava tube

Vocanic environment

Sorry if this has already been mentioned, but i think what would make for some good underground areas would be nice dark eery bomb shelters.

Since this game has a post apocolyptic theme i thought it would be a good fit for it.

Long dark tunnels with lots of zombies i gaurantee you gonna crap yourself

here some exemples from a very good European comic (les cités obscures)
the pictures are from the city of “calvani”

and here some props made for the movie “the city of lost children”
