Survive in the desert

I have started a Arid Highlands map and I have no clay so no pottery to sell, no willow so no basket to sell, no herbs so can’t get to level 2 so I can’t craft soap and candles for sale.
Other than increasing the population to earn gold with taxes, I don’t see what I could do to get by. But food is scarce so not so easy to have a large population at first.

I would be happy if you would like to advise me. Thanks.

You need to purchase clay, willow is not necessary (as baskets only improve transport. Medicine can be purchased.)
Their are some herbs on the map, but it’s rare, somewhere between 2 to 7 patches, herbs and soap can be purchased. You can sell raw materials and ores for money, (their are a lot on the map anyway.)

Food isn’t that big of an issue, their is a lot of meat and wild berries. Place the fields in the yellow area, and carefully make the ground more fertile. Don’t be to greedy, the wield is low at start. I would recommend to start with three small fields, for having a constant flow of food.

Try to search for a pond or a small lake, their are a couple on the map (and at least one of them has herbs.)

Yes but the trading post require level 2.
So, i have to finish exploring the map (about 70% done) to find the herbs. I have found 2 very small lakes with no plants till now.
Thanks for your tips.

If their aren’t any herbs, then you’ve got some bad luck. It can also being hidden in a corner. The level 1 trading post sells herbs and clay. Medicine needs tier two.

Yes but I have no gold. Market collect just enough to pay the compost yard. That’s why I asked help the community.

Played on arid vanguard and fortunately I had herbs near the lake I settled close to. Found some near an other lake not very far too.

No clay, no willow as you said but that was not too much of a problem:

  • merchants quite often have clay (even-though at some point I had 3 years without anyone selling it … but that’s why I buy all their stock each time  )
  • willow is rarely in the merchants inventory, so difficult to have baskets

To have gold you can quite often do some arbitrage when 2 merchants are there at the same time. Check what one is selling and the other buying and quite often you see that you can buy low and sell high.

Haven’t checked if merchants often come with herbs though, because otherwise it will be difficult to have homesteads.

No herbs are needed to get the town hall to T2. You need the herbs to upgrade your shacks to houses.

You can and should build the trading post as soon as you can. Trading ores for other goods seems to be key here. All ores can be mined as soon as you build a wagon shop (needs town hall T2)

Looks like you need more houses in range of the market. You get additional income from hunter, gatherer and/or fishermen huts as well. Even watch towers generate income at the market although they cost 5G upkeep. But if you have some try to squeeze them in the corner areas of the market in the beginning.

To really earn money you should flip ressources at the trader and sell all the ores you don’t need at T2 stage of your town

Sorry, I made a mistake when writing.

And thanks for the advice.

I have started a new map. The previous one didn’t contain any weed. On this one, I have two so life is beautiful ^^
The current difficulty is the fertility of the fields. My cows refuse to graze there and the compost hardly changes anything. Would planting clover for 3 years improve fertility significantly?

Cows can’t graze on fields anymore.

OK. So I misunderstood the devs announcement. I had understood that they no longer ate clover but root vegetables from the fields.

I was rerolling for a couple of hours just to get a lake with herbs. And I was lucky, a medium lake appeared with five herb patches around it (I was really happy, because the surrounding area was protected by mountains and their was some large and small patch of farm land.)
The only annoying thing is that two patches of herbs can’t be collected, but that’s not a problem because their is a hidden small lake with two patches of herbs.

Herbs are rather important in FF, as well as a raw material as for soap, (you also need it for medicine, but you are better with purchasing the medicine in Arid Highlands.)

OK, I wont craft medecine in arid Highlands.
