I’m very new to this game, bought it last week and I’m quite enjoying it haha.
As the kind of guy who likes to plan ahead… I was really wondering if I could get tips on how to build an efficient 1h Warder.
I’m playing in a two-man team too so I don’t need the perfect solo build, but I wanna be able to still not be dead weight for my team. I picked sword and board 'cuz I’m a sucker for tanking, and Warder seemed rather tanky for a choice.
If there’s one thing that’d be awesome (but I feel like it’s just impossible) it’d be to reach both Obelisk of Menhir and Oleron in the Devotions hah, if you guys could help me out with that, it’d be great, but I completely get if that’s not a choice.
Otherwise err… my main issue is figuring out what I want to focus on? Physical, internal trauma and bleeding look like good choices, but the Shaman is great at lightning too.
h ttp://grimcalc.com/build/1009-pmIYiD (just remove the space in the url until I can post links!) I used GrimCalc and made a very mock build for now (I’m not 85 yet at all) and well, I know many things are just rushed so I’d really appreciate pointers on what I could work on!
Thanks a ton in advance!
Edit: I’m so sorry if the title is misleading, I didn’t think of it until I posted and now I dunno if I can even change it. I am asking for help and not featuring such a build myself D:

this depends, you want to go full tank; very new player friendly and an effective way of amassing starter gear for your long Grim Dawn career
full DPS; not really efficient as playing a 2H primal strike warder will put your 1h+Shield dmg to shame
hybrid (relatively harder to build without access to BiS gear) but does the tanking relatively wel’, but helps alleviate the ranged and caster problem of most tank retaliation builds.

good, so am i. if you have a partner that only makes your life much easier. go look up Squib’s Retaliation Tank Guide. It’s near unkillable and keeps you your ally safe as long as he does his part staying out of agro. your retaliation damage will clean up most melees for him. And incidentally it is a decent solo build even at ultimate for 80% of the content. It’s only weakness is its inability to kill ranged and casters at a decent speed without putting yourself to sleep.

bad news but you can only get one. i also dreamed of this but unfortunately it’s not meant to be. go Bulwark. If you wish to be a tank then keep it that way.
Otherwise err… my main issue is figuring out what I want to focus on? Physical, internal trauma and bleeding look like good choices, but the Shaman is great at lightning too.
my advice would be to start as a full tank beginning. Your retaliation dmg will take care of the damage. Only think about this when you have the appropriate gear to properly fill in the problem. Do NOT make the mistake of allocating your attributes, skills and devotions to do both in the beginning. Master the path of the tank first, once you have them Legendaries then you can start messing around with devotions and your gear and other MI’s will take care of the damage and OA that pure tanks naturally lack. +skills on gear will enable you to respec and spread your hard skill points to your offense options.
i also consider myself a tank specialist. my flagship character (main) for every A-RPG i get my hands on has always been a tank. So I tend to put more effort in researching. Thankfully in this game. It’s relatively easy to build as the general gameplay is all about face-tanking even for non-tank archetypes. You will love this game if you play tank toons. Not so much if you plan on playing glass cannons, if such a thing was actually possible.
I think there was a misunderstanding here. I think gascronron thought “Oleron’s Rage” and “Menhrir’s Bulwark” from the Soldier skill tree were being referenced.
It is possible to get both Oleron and Menhrir’s Obelisk in Devotion, although I’m not sure if it’s ideal and you will be missing a point in Oleron. There may be a way to improve it a bit, but here is what I did (I didn’t fill out the skill trees, only the Devotion is complete): http://grimcalc.com/build/1009-iTyehk
This is probably one of the best ways to get both Oleron and Obelisk of Menhir. jonnyk82 pointed it out already but this should be more viable for a warder. If you’d rather have Bull or Solemn Watcher instead of Panther, you’ll have to take a point out of Oleron.
Oh wow, these are interesting setups! Thank you o: I was actually building bull atm haha, but I could change it. I just liked the skill it had.
If I did keep it though, which point of Oleron would you suggest to skip?
Since we are already on this subject, I might as well take this opportunity to improve my build atm. Is Messenger of War no longer “meta” for retal/hybrid retal warders?. Because i could sure use those points in upping my offensive damage.
Most heroes/bosses are pretty resistant to reflection damage plus they don’t melee attack a lot, so if you need more single target damage, swapping to more offense wouldn’t be a bad idea. If you need the trash clear, I’d keep Messenger.
@Dlesar:
The only thing of real value in that constellation is the 25% reflect, with the stacking sources of retaliation bonus you get from certain gear and other constellations the the potential damage loss on paper doesn’t seem to be huge. >>> Please Correct me if I’m wrong. (Thornhide Legguards, Thorn Girdle, Avenger of Cairn & Venomspine Greaves + other Retaliation Constellations) -> Is this sufficient?
I’m half considering re-specing out of Messenger and into Bull. My retaliation mostly clear out any melee trash, with ranged and casters being my primary headache. Just wanting to get those ranged clears at a more respectable.
@gasconron
I know this doesn’t really answer your question but, I’m just wondering, why don’t you have Targo the Builder? 125% damage reflection is pretty nice, maybe you should consider it.
Also, the best way to decide would be to swap and judge how it feels. Which sucks cause that means you’d need to level up Bull Rush.
oh damn, talk about severe blindness. completely overlooked it. and at a decent proc rate 33%. I’m pretty sure I can keep it up 100% of the time with this as long as I’m swinging.
thanks, this is why i go to forums.
As it turns out, I’ll have to make major revisions to get in Shield Wall. Something I’m not really keen on making.
I hope the new expansion brings up Devotions to 60 or even 55 I can think of a lot of ways to be more flexible on hybrid builds.
I highly doubt it. With A-RPGs it’s usually just 3 difficulties. Only Sacred seemed to endorse a 4-stage difficulty. And even the first one is optional and you can immediately skip to Silver. Much like Grim Dawn’s Normal & Veteran Difficulty.
Expansions by nature carry a huge difficulty spike in general which is why it often leads to a higher level cap. Would be a nice extra if there were extra devotion points too.
Fair enough haha. (Let’s not mention Diablo 3 and its 5 difficulties + togglable fifth difficulty)
Also I could use a bit of advice. If I were to go with the Bull devotion, which point of Oleron would be less penalizing to drop? I’m not sure if the skill is the best considering it triggers if I get crit, and my DA will be so high I don’t think I’ll get crit much at all.
