Why? Because I have to replay the same story line for a third time? No
I have 15+ and have replayed the story line many times, however what makes GD fun is trying out new and interesting builds and what makes any ARPG fun is the feeling of getting stronger and progressing.
That is what makes Ultimate boring for me, there is no longer any progress made or anything left to achieved.
The fun part of a build is level 30 - 50 or so, that is when the character starts to take shape. By level 50 you get access to the legendaries and the power jump a level. I usually end Veteran by level 51 or so. In Elite you get stronger, you get the extra devotion points and flesh out your build. By level 58 and 65 you get strong because you get new gear.
Usually by level 65 or so, which is late Elite, I have 50 devotion points. By level 75, you get access to the final super strong legendaries. This is usually the end of Elite. By now the build is basically complete as your main skills would be maxed and there is nothing to look forward to in terms of better gear. The last skills points and ability points are spend on defense and survive-ability.
Now I start Ultimate to see if my build works and it does, great! But there is nothing left to play for, nothing to look forward to, so I’d rather restart a new character.
I completely disagree. To me Ultimate is where the build at its full power will be tested, mainly against the Nemeses, Mad Queen and Edge of Reality. Add Port Valbury and Shar’zul.
To me this is what Ultimate is, the final test and this is honestly the thing i look forward the most.
in Ultimate you focus less on your char inner strenghts (skills, attributes, devotion…) and more on gear (and on loot if you don’t have the gear).
i agree with Norzan that’s it is the “real” difficulty (i have a bunch of chars which struggle in Ultimate after an Elite steamroll). it’s part of the fun for me but of course to each his own (beside, you’ll always have an endgame where your character doesn’t progress any more but is sorely tested - if you find it boring, go create a new char !)
Ultimate is where the fun is, but I get it that many people don’t like to repeat the storyline… To be honest I would love to get access to special unique heroes in this difficulty, like what Titan Quest did in higher difficulties when you get access to Manticore and Hydra, Dragon Liche etc in higher difficulties. In GD we can have them too, make them available in ultimate perhaps and keep them distinct, separate from nemesis. Wishful thinking!
anyway Zantai said we will have more special secret quests in the future, so looking forward to it too!
I get this a lot. Many of my characters burn out in A1/A2 ultimate before I make a new one to focus on. For me, I think the big issue is in having essentially less to do in Ultimate than the other difficulties. There’s fewer devotion shrines, side quests become less important, you usually do all of your bounties in Elite, there’s no Ultimate-only content (until post/Act 4).
Well, I would disagree. While you might have reached level 75 at elite and geared up before Ultimate, not many players do that. A lot of players who play self-found are looking forward to Ultimate loot, because a lot of quest related content rewards you with the legendary item in Ultimate, as well as dungeons with Heroic/One-shot chests that you try for the first time.
Same with devotions, unless you eased your way by leveling a bit in Crucible (prior even to Normal) and bought yourself ~10 devotion points there, you need shrines in Ultimate to complete your char.
You also need to grind that Infamy level and face those nemeses bosses. And Roguelike dungeons, especially Port of Valbury makes sense when you reach Ultimate. Mad Queen is also another boss that only makes sense to kill in Ultimate. And don’t forget about mr. Bourbon and the whole secret quest. And maxing out devotion procs levels. See, a lot of stuff
I don’t consider the loot hunt to be ‘content’. I consider where you conduct that loot hunt to be content.
Devotions are only ‘content’ insofar as completing the shrines goes, and as I mentioned, there are far fewer to do even for fun in Ultimate than the earlier difficulties. I wish desecrated shrines, namely the SoT one, could be repeated once/session, even without a devotion point reward…
And I rarely care about completing my character, because there isn’t enough content to keep me entertained in doing so.
No you don’t. There’s no ‘need’ to do so, it’s entirely optional.
They make sense at all periods of the game.
PV is the only one that is best held off of until Ultimate.
I do SoT immediately upon reaching it in Normal/Elite for fun and BoC several times in Elite to gear/level up. Once you reach Ultimate, there’s not especially much of a reason to bother with the dungeons. They’re overly difficult in Ultimate for undergeared characters and not at all rewarding for appropriately geared characters.
Actually, it never makes sense to kill Mad Queen. A bad infrequent that once you have a couple you never need to farm for again.
Arguably the single best part about the game, but un-startable until Act 3 and incompletable until Act 4.
Shame my characters tend to burn out in Act 1/2 as I said.
Not content. If this were content, max devotion proc levels could be 500,000 and Grim Dawn would have enough content to make you puke. Levels are not content. Ask D3, with their endless progression systems that tire and bore players.
