The Silver Sentinel

Since most sets are supporting multiple classes I think demo would be a good addition to the silver sentinel with the use of thermite mines. I’ve read in another thread on some demo buffs coming in 1.1.0.0 but I don’t think it will still change the “clunky” feel they have. However in it’s current state I think it would work well with this set.

Converting the fire/burn damage to cold/frostburn or just as additional damage to thermite mines as well as some added cold RR to fit the theme of the set. I can see why mines are not preferred for melee builds but with this being more of a kite/dot set I think it would fit nice and open up some more doors for saboteurs.

I mean…if they can put some fragments of the original Rune of Hagaraad in the Mythical Hagarradian Enforcer then surely they must have some spare pieces left for some thermite mines in addition to some fun blue flame jets :stuck_out_tongue:

Thermite mines generally only work if you’re standing in melee, so they’re preferred by melee builds compared to something that kites. The issue with mines is that their effects only really work if a mob is standing directly on top of them.

I would prefer this set not be altered as I have an excellent and phenomenally enjoyable build built around it  a set that needs major work is the Keeper of the Flame.

As far as altering the set goes. I didn’t mention the idea of removing anything from it. I didn’t see any harm in the set supporting a third class. As far as the mines go, I think with a decent amount of frost burn they could work in a similar fashion as RoH. Obviously they wouldn’t have as much damage given that they would also apply some RR.

I’d just like to see a set that supports them in a way that looks appealing to the playstyle. Most of the time when the topic of thermite mines comes up no one cares to use them but you also can’t miss out on the RR they offer. However I do appreciate the feedback on the idea all the same

Not sure if I’m just misunderstanding, but the RR application is not a DoT. So unless mobs are standing directly on top of them, the RR basically just falls off. Which means if they were balanced around dealing DoT damage, they’d just be an inferior of RoH. I’m all for it, I like improving options and viability. Outside of just picking the skill for thematic joy, which is definitely a reason to pick it, it wouldn’t be particularly great.

I think the biggest issue here is that Silver Sentinel is an epic set, and thus flat out can’t have skill modifiers on it. :stuck_out_tongue:

I wouldn’t mind seeing cold Thermite support on another item though. Every little bit of Saboteur support helps.

Gotta agree that the idea itself is good from op, but silver sentinel is not the right set to which these ideas should be applied. There are many other purple items/sets that could fit this purpose.

Okay I see what you are saying about the RR since it can’t carry it over X seconds after applying damage. I did derp on the idea that it is an epic and won’t have modifiers. Thanks for the clarification

3 comments on the above, if I may…

  1. Skill visuals only change through transmuters. So, afaik, no blue jets, I’m afraid.

  2. Cold RoH (and cold in general) has so much support on infiltrators (and other masteries) that asking for more on thematically unrelated masteries might be mistaken for fussiness. This might be a fine gimmick for Nex&Ortus or Chillflame firestrike. I’d put that mod on Chillfkame Evokers rather than out-of-place Silver Sentinel, to somewhat balance the N&O powerhouse.

  3. Thermite Mines is a skill that compliments demo’s high RNG play style (meaning maybe they’ll survive until they take effect and maybe not, maybe an enemy will keep standing on them as he’s taking damage and maybe not). As such, they can’t be much depended on especially for rune builds. In fact, if you look at many of the recent top tier builds they often don’t use mines at all. Firestrike builds simply not have points to waste on “maybies”

There’s an excellent build by thejabrixone using that set and it had results in 1.6.0.1 that were competitive with the best Fire Strike auotoattackers.

  1. Yeah I know that is generally the case. However doesn’t farath’s cube offhand change FoI to blue? Just thought I would mention it for flavor.

  2. I agree, my suggestion would make cold thermites similar to how RoH plays which does have a lot of gear support already. Only difference would be adding some love to the sabos should you go that route.

  3. I get it, I just tried to come up with something that would give a skill that generally no one takes as you also have mentioned, and make it appealing in some fashion.

To address all of the above. I didn’t expect to see posts flood in with agreement. I enjoy the discussion and the points that were made. I hope that “maybe” this topic could be used at some point in adding cold thermite support in the game and in turn adding a little more for saboteurs that most players look at as the “weaker” class. Maybe even alongside a skill revamp for thermites to make the skill flow better with the play style if the dev team decides that’s what it needs.

It’s viability doesn’t mean that the set as a whole shouldn’t have its design reconsidered. It has a proc that encourages use of WPS, but little in the way of support for those WPS, instead focusing primarily on spells.

From his own post:

“The set is weird as while it’s completion bonus is giving a really good WPS, its individual pieces are also giving bonus to WoP, Grenado, and BWC. It is not giving any bonus to fire strike line at all.”

I didn’t know that. Thanks for correcting me.

Personally I think what saboteurs need most is more stuff (like that medal - forgot the name) that converts nightblade stuff to fire. And of course better sets. There’s is a nice build with Rimetongue but honestly, imo, it only uses that set for the lack of better options and its power comes mostly from recent buffs to N&O.
