So, I’ve spent the last year playing hardcore only. I loved the challenge of never dying, and the satisfaction of creating a solid and effective build. I reached level 85 with my witch-blade skeleton spawning warrior and was chuffed to bits.
On ultimate, I was was at the penultimate boss…all was going fine…then…death!! I must have taken a big crit as my health was over half full. In hindsight I should have backed off, but too late. I’ve had lots of other characters die too. I’m now fed up with hardcore. Not because of issues with the game. It’s balanced so well and is perfect for a hardcore enthusiast. I’ve just had enough. I want to experience as much of the game as I can, exploring all devotion skills and maxing skill trees.
I’m happy now to be a softcore guy. I really try to avoid death, but if it happens that’s ok. The monsters can come back, so why can’t I?!
What are your thoughts and experiences?
Currently on 470hrs playtime, and love that new George Washington wig!
You didn’t take a crit, it was a shotgun projectile acid bile attack. Not many builds can take it head on and live. I think all my builds can take it once, but i immediately have to either GTFO or jam the potion button to avoid a second shotgun.
I only have 3 profiles in Diablo 2:LoD that actually finished the game on Hardcore. The rest of them are all softcore.
In GD on my third profile when i first took on Shar’Zul on Softcore Veteran and he decimated me i knew to stay the fuck away from hardcore. I haven’t made a hardcore profile yet (well if you don’t count the one that died) :p, nor do i intend to.
After playing this long and making many builds, I am confident i can make builds that can take on Rashalga, Shar’Zul and Fabius. But there’s one nemesis who gives me nightmares- The Iron Maiden! I have yet to kill her w/o dying. The only one who managed to do it w/o deaths was my Poison DEE spammer WH. And he did it because there were Order of Death’s Vigil members (lambs waiting to be slaughtered) in the adjacent room and i sacrificed all of them to the Maiden
Softcore for me, its a game. Don’t need the extra aggravation of perma death. The best thing about hitting level 85 is the who cares approach. I played D3 hardcore when inferno was still the last difficulty and beat it but it didn’t do much for me. D2 duriel always would wreck me on normal.
