Unable to work

I think the phrase “unable to work” is misleading, it infers there is something wrong which there isn’t. It should be for instance simply “nothing to do” which is factually correct
“Idling - nothing to do” sounds a lot better and cleaner

That is exactly what unable to work means. It means they tried to do work, but cannot for some reason that’s blocking them from doing so.

I have two requests related to “unable to work”

  1. tell us why

  2. anyone who is currently in “unable to work” status should temporarily go to the general labor pool

But unable to work is not good English, it does not work

Unable to work implies that me as the player have got something wrong when in fact it is the game getting it wrong. it is not my fault an assigned worker has nothing to do, the game is controlling them

The would add flavor as well. Farmers could have “winter season”, blacksmiths could have “no resources available”, ratcatchers could have “no rats to catch”, and so on.

It might be your fault. build a foundry, but have no gold, iron or coal

That would be cool for seasonal workers like farmers and arborists, but I’d rather my goods producers and traders/grocers stayed put if they had no stocking to do at the moment.

But also yes, some informative labels would be welcome, like “attending trading post” or “out of materials”

make it a per-profession setting, that the player can select

That’s why I suggested elsewhere to introduce seasonal professions for individual villagers. So your farmers could farm in the summer and make candles and shoes in the winter. That way you could use your labor force a lot more efficiently.

I agree with the OP. And the German translation “nicht arbeitsfähig” is even worse. It is only used if you can’t work for personal reasons, not if they are idle because of the workplace. So the first couple of hours in the game I thought the villagers where sick or something.

This. Please.

Unable to work in most cases is simply not true.
There is work to be done in most cases but they just down tools and say wandering or idle - unable to work.
I can understand “rest time” but not unable to work.
Any worker assigned a specific job should only not work if:

  • No required stock items available to fetch
  • no stock of one or more items
  • Winter

Many times they can work but don’t, nonsense
I hope the devs are looking into this very misleading false statement “unable to work”, it makes no sense
