I just installed GD and set the graphics options to max (as I always do with every game), but this time the fan of my video card went haywire, so i turned everything to a minimum, but still the same thing happened: the fan makes so much noise it seems someone is vacuumcleaning the room!
Is there something I should know/configure that’s different from other games?
The newest game I have is Star Wars Battlefront from Dice, but no fan is overworking with that game…
My PC has an Intel Core i5-4690K CPU @ 3.50GHz, an AMD Radeon 7800 series GFX card, 16 GB DDR3 RAM… I think it meets the game’s requirements, as specified in the FAQ…
Can anyone shed some light on this odd behaviour of my GFX card?
First, monitor your FPS. As has been mentioned V-sync will usually help you if your FPS are out of control high, which in tern ups the temps and fan usage on your CPU and or GPU. Make sure V-sync is even working, and consider using a FPS limiter to keep FPS under control.
If 60 FPS is still causing a lot of fan usage, you may have to look into improving your HSF, or reapplying it, or maybe dusting out the inside of your case, fixing cable management or some other heat inducing issue.
Download a program like afterburner to monitor your temperatures your graphics card as it is almost surely getting too hot. You can manually control the fan or setup temp/fan speed profiles with a lot of programs like as well to limit the noise a bit if it’s not too hot. If it only happens in GD well I’ve no clue what to say But yeah either your case air flow is really bad, fans are too dusty etc or the fan on your graphics card is not functioning and only running at low/max speeds for some reason.
I’ve downloaded and installed AfterBurner with RivaTuner. The results are in the attachment. I’ve configured the game in such a way that the graphics are okay (but just okay) and my GPU fan is a bit louder, but not vacuumcleaner loud…
Note: I had to set the shadows high, to avoid flickering artifacts.
So this is my first experience with Grim Dawn. Coming from Titan Quest, which looks more than fine to my eyes and never causes problems with my GPU fan, I am puzzled to see that I cannot achieve the same (apparent) graphics quality in GD without forcing the graphics card…
I suppose it’s got something to do with much more details (models) having to be rendered and shaded… but i don’t know anything about the difference in game design between GD and TQ so that’s just a hunch, nothing else.
