Quick question: as a Russian person, did you find the Witcher series funny/humorous?
The whole series? No, def not. It had its funny moments here and there. But overall it was more grim than anything.
Same. I’m an English reader and it’s been a while now since I last read any of it but I don’t recall it coming across as intended to be humorous in any fashion. I’m sure it had moments but other than that just dark, hard fantasy. I liked it very much tho but as for Polish intricacies, well, I guess we can leave those to the Polish. We still get a pretty good read out of it regardless.
And honestly it is good that the localization editors/translators left political commentary (in regards to Poland) out of it. Outside readers likely wouldn’t care for such things nor likely understand the context with the exception of broad social issues perhaps. We’re there for a good fantasy romp, not to be dragged into a localized debate.
Matter of taste, I guess. Personally, I found the original hilarious. The English translation in turn seemed a little dry and soulless. Still high above the regular mass produced fantasy pulp though.
The kite runner is a good book .
Once against revisiting the Dresden Files. Wish they’d make an R rated cartoon mini series or something, the previous television series was beyond terrible.
Devoured Lies Sleeping (Rivers of London book 7) by Ben Aaronovitch and thoroughly enjoyed it, more so given the plot threads running through the series that got resolved. Though there is one left dangling involving a certain former police officer who got possessed by Mr Punch.
Currently devouring The Monster Baru Cormorant by Seth Dickson, which weighs in at just over 600 bloody pages. Also very good, since I’ve managed 500 odd pages in 4 sessions. Though it looks like it’s heading to a cliff hanger given the lack of remaining pages vs the number of converging plot threads.
Oh also consumed Foundryside by the excellent Robert Jackson Bennett and can’t wait for the sequel that’s coming this year. In part due to the excellent world building involving how magic works in that world.
I’m reading The Thousand Autumns of Jacob de Zoet by David Mitchell.
I just picked up the new Christopher Paolini book (because I read Eragon as a kid and it’s a guilty pleasure), but I think it was a mistake. The book length says that it is like 270 pages, but that’s because it is deceptively published. This thing is definitely more like a 100 page book. The physical book is tiny, the pages have massive margins and significant line spacing. Oh well. Hopefully the 3 short stories are at least entertaining.
Just started reading a collection of short stories by H.P. Lovecraft, translated into german.
I’ve been reading The Eye of The world by Robert Jordan on and off. I keep meaning to finish it as I’ve been enjoying it, just not enough time atm.
I own all the books and for the most part the series is definitely enjoyable. Just the complete opposite of Game of Thrones where the author keeps adding more and more characters. Some of the books are really awesome and there are great parts that come up in the series but at times it can feel like a bit of a slog.
One thing that’s rather amusing is that the 3 main protagonists keep referring to each other as “better understanding of the female sex” - it’s a really odd quirk that keeps popping up in the series lol. Me and my brother joked about this a number of times in the past.
The Hot Zone by Richard Preston.
The Lusty Argonian Maid by Crassius Curio.
Continuing on with the Destroyermen series by Taylor Anderson.
Book 13 and I think there will probably be at least 1 or 2 more… This is the problem when authors create a massive scope of a story and decide to introduce more characters while rarely killing them off lol.
Liu Cixin - Remembrance of Earth’s Past
James Rollins - Crucible (Sigma Force 14)
Is about how to defeat wave 170 extra spawn? Prefaction by mad lee.
I love fantasy books, The Witches series is especially important to me, since I am Polish
Just started the First Law by Joe Abercrombie. Nice
Oh, Sapkowski’s characters are gorgeous! Have you read his Narrenturm?
Just discovered that there are like 200 warhammer fantasy novels written…Time to get myself a proper bookshelf.
