Baaaaaaallllllllllzzzzzzzz… you’re right, I apologize. I meant Pillars of Eternity. Stoopid fucking cold meds, I haven’t been able to think straight for a week. Sorry for the snark. Pillars was what I meant in the first post, not PoE.
Let me see if I understand you:
You want a character generation like Ultima V. The character is fix.
When doing things in game, the character gets tweaks/develops skills/gets better. A little bit like Skyrim and Dragon Age (?)?
And totally without numbers…don´t think it´s possible.
I don’t think the player should see the numbers. It’s totally possible. Character sheets are for Table Top.
Generation would be a matter of selecting backgrounds and careers, a bit like Dragon Age, Ultima, etc. Progression would be along several different lines - from skill use, experience, and in-game experiences. Something that would be gods-awful to track in a TT game, but that a computer handles really well.
Hm, I see. A player never can “choose” an ability, it is granted when doing something? For example hitting an enemy critically for 3 times in a row will open up something like “Power Attack”?
But still:
How should a player know, what skill to use, if he/she can´t see any numbers?
Players might not know! It would be far less about tactical decisions and much more about immersion and roleplaying. That’s the point!
Well, I think maybe a kind of Adventure would be better suited for this kind of game.
Have you heard of Exanima/ Sui Generis?
No, I have not. I will check (them/it?) out, though…
Problem with RPG on a computer is that players not knowing something just doesn’t happen anymore. Yes your new mechanics might be cool and all but you can be sure that after a day or two every little detail will have been figured out and guides posted everywhere. Mystery, gone.
FWIW I wish it wasn’t so, but it just is.
To a certain degree, that’s correct. But there’s a large enough casual-ish contingent out there that isn’t going to powergame/optimize every aspect of a game. There are lots of us. We buy games.
