This makes it hard to intentionally keep a Wolf Den around, even if it’s intentional to farm them for food and hides.
As soon as I tell them to move elsewhere and ignore the Den, they instantly attack it again as if it was a building or enemy actively attacking them, which it shouldn’t be treated as.
Also, Wolf Dens tend to be ridiculously dangerous to most citizens, so they should never want to attack a Wolf Den by themselves, except perhaps for soldiers and hunters and even those should only do so if ordered to attack it.
Attacking dens shouldn’t be a top priority over saving/escorting another villager back to camp. Villagers should not drop their tasks or whatever it is they’re carrying and rush to attack a den by themselves.
I agree that the job to attack a den should be for folks with weapons only. Like hunters and soldiers.
Yeah it is really annoying when a den is the absolute top priority over literally anything else when a villager is just passing by too close to it, collecting dropped items, chopping nearby trees, harvesting berries etc.
Makes it extremely annoying when you just happened to place a town center rather close to a den but don’t want to destroy it yet, whether to preserve nature, keep some challenge around or farm wolf meat or any other reason.
It’s even worse when a random villager just happens to pass by too close to a wolf den, they actively get drawn towards it, making it even more likely to die to wolves as it’s random whether they attack or retreat when in the area of effect of the “taunt” of a Wolf Den, but it seems most prefer attacking. Retreating is better either, as they refuse to pick up whatever was dropped and if they try to do so, they end up attacking again instead - and encourage others nearby to drop their tasks and do so as well.
I just stick up a defence tower near the den and 2 hunters can easily give a good supply of wolves under cover of the tower, I’ve never had a problem, in fact I get excited when I find a den… less excited when I find three or four together right enough…
Citizens dropping everything and attacking den was in 0.7.5 too.
As a food source it’s only valuable in the mid game. Before crossbows and tower support, your hunters are too squishy to hunt wolves and not die too often. Later game, an extra cow barn will produce more meat. But mid game, one wolf den can provide as much meat as 3 herds or deer.
So… there is an incentive to keep wolf dens, and super aggressiveness of laborers hurts.
If laborers are made neutral towards the dens, they could at least do some tasks like moving a blueberry bush or collect a body for burial, after hunters or soldiers made the area temporarily safe from wolves.
That’s a possibility later on, but early on when you start out near a den and have no resources or building availability to build a tower or have spare logs for a fence, that isn’t really an option.
Though it is more of a workaround than a solution, as no unarmed worker should never want to randomly suicide themselves into a wolf den just because they see it.
