[1.0.0.6] Witchblade, Fist of the Northern Star build (0 Markovian piece)

This build is even stronger now as possession no longer cost mana to maintain. So the only minor downside associated with this build in 1.0.0.6 which was mana problem has been eliminated as well. Enjoy!

UPDATE - 150 gladiator screenshots:

EDIT: I changed the devotion a bit. We gave up 10% block recovery (99%–>89%) but gained about 200 OA.
I also dropped one of the ring of the black Matriarch and replace it with open hand of mercy. Open hand of mercy gives good resistance and additional 10% resistance reduction.

Are you finding yourself reaching a bottle neck around wave 130+ in challenger/gladiator crucible, even though your sheet dps seems decent, somehow you still get overwhelmed by the horde?

Are you finding yourself lacking defense and feel so helpless when the final wave spawns Iron Maiden + Fabby and you just get tag teamed? (And you try to take all the defense devotion but it still won’t help!)

And are you tired of seeing the full Markovian set Witchblade running around, carrying all the dead teammates to wave 150 and trivialize the end game content that just seems so impossible to you? You feel a little envious but at the same time, you just don’t feel like converting and become another Markovian warrior…

Well, allow me to present you the alternative Witchblade build that requires ZERO Markovian or any set legendary item.

I will keep this guide as concise as possible:

First, grimcalc and quick leveling guide:

http://grimcalc.com/build/1006-brPFfX without gear, devotion included

http://grimcalc.com/build/1006-gK4yQY with gear

For normal/veteran difficulty, max out Dreeg’s Evil Eyes and grab its mutation “Focused Gaze”, this pretty much will get you one-shot anything in the first difficulty along with the early proc devotions such as scorpion sting and guardian’s gaze (make sure you put a skill point into bloody pox and bind guardian’s gaze to it. When you fight against a bunch of enemies, toss a blood pox into a group of mob and it will start procing the devotion like crazy. You’ll have a bunch of eyes flying around you and they do a shit load of damage.)

For Elite, continue the devotion progression. When I leveled this character, I grabbed Manticore first. But looking back, it’s probably better to rush abomination and grab Tainted Eruption as soon as possible. TE gives you insane clear speed. Just try it out and you will see.

For Ultimate, once you have enough devotion point, grab the acid spray devotion. It gives you 30 resistance reduction and a lot of added poison/acid damage.

If you are playing non-hardcore, you can prioritizing maxing vulnerability. If you’re playing hardcore, I would definitely prioritize on defensive skills like blood of dreeg, overguard, shield training, military condition.

Always put a point in Blitz early game after maxing DEE. It helps you move around and makes game play more fluid.

Your main damage comes from these skills:
DEE, Devotion proc skills, Dreeg’s infinite gaze granted by component “Mark of Dreeg” (this is important because it has a short cool down and it does a ton of damage, almost comparable to DEE) and last but not the least, the skill that is granted by an end game relic called Dreeg’s affliction.

Second, Devotion skills assignment:
Guardian gaze --> bloody pox (Guardian gaze works super well with bloody pox. The way I use it in crucible is: throw bloody pox in a pile of enemy, leave them and go deal with another group, by the time I toss my second bloody pox, there will usually be 2-3 guardian gaze rotating around me. By the end of every wave, if RNG is with me, I could have up to 6-7 guardian gazes and that counts for around 12-13k dps alone.
Dryad blessing --> Curse of frailty
Scorpion sting --> blitz
Acid Spray --> Dee
Tainted Eruption --> Dreeg’s infinite gaze (skill gained through using component Mark of Dreeg)

Q: What makes this build worth trying out:

  1. It has incredible defense. Here is a list of what you got:
  • You have 67% block chance. When Overguard is up, you have 89% block recovery with 3074 damage blocked.
  • A heal skill that heals for 35% of max health and also gives you 12% physical resistance. Your shield gives another 17% and chest 4%, for a total of 33% physical resistance! Additionally, possession gives you 12% damage absorption.
  • You have 40% stun reduction so you don’t have to worry much about getting stun locked by Iron Maiden + Fabby. Footpads of the Grey Magi is the key because it gives 117% reduced entrapment duration. Now you don’t ever have to worry about getting trapped and not able to run.
  1. You have incredible offense. Originally in GD, dot can not crit. But the devs were kind enough to change that so that this build is able to dish out 50k-100k dot damage ON BOSS consistently. (Keep in mind that the screen shot was took in town so it doesn’t include the bonus damage and OA from fighting spirit.) Also, keep in mind that you can crit that hard because you have about 114% resist reduction.)

  2. This build has a theme. It’s called ‘Fist of the Northern Star’ for a reason. Just like Kenshiro in the manga, your play style is go in, unleash your poison combo, and before they realize it, they are already dead. And just like Kenshiro, you won’t die.

  3. This build has lots of advantage over a pure offense Witch Hunter build. While a Witch Hunter theoretically does do more sheet dps, the survivability of Witch Hunter can be a huge problem. In high level of crucible, they can die to nemesis team/hordes of enemies that has gap closer/CC ability easily. When you’re dead, you do no damage.

Q: It still looks like you have a lot of purple gear. How gear dependent is this build?

In all honesty, the very key piece of gear here is the foot. Our goal is to never get CCed. Stun resistance is relatively easy to get, but entrapment reduction is not a stat that comes by easily. As long as we don’t get CCed, we can play this build in a fluid way that it is intended. You go in, does damage, leaves the fight whenever you want because no one can catch you, and you still see those 50-100k dot on the head of bosses ticking.

And you do want to get your block recovery as close to 100% as possible. But that does NOT require any specific gear to achieve. It’s all done through skill (Overguard) and component.

tl;dr:

  1. The build uses no Markovian pieces and is built to farm end game crucible.
  2. Not gear dependent at all.
  3. Incredible offense and defense. You get to watch the nemesis bosses die hopelessly in front of you.

Hope you enjoy my guide and let me know if there’s anything I could improve.

Cheers!

p.s. a quick example of just how much reduction we have:
-39% poison reduction from vulnerability
-20% from passive granted by our pants
-30% from Manticore devotion
-25% from plaguebearer of Dreeg
-10% from open hand of mercy ring
and Maw of Despair gives us another 20% reduced target resistance.

So let’s say an average boss in ultimate that has 40% poison res, after all the res reduction hit, it will have (40-39-20-30-35-10)*1.2 = -114% poison resistance, which means every poison damage it takes get more than doubled.

Isn’t this less of a fist of the northern star and more of… a black swordsman build?

any vids comming soon ?

Very interesting looking. I like the concept; I might have to try it out.

Why are you overleveling possession and warcry? Why such a poorly invested in cadence? Why two rings of the black matriarch? (They don’t stack fyi)

Overleveling possession for that bit of extra damage and mitigation… I actually just made some changes to the grimcalc if you want to check out.

Cadence’s damage is minimal compared to the poison aoe that you’re able to dish out. You could go for a max level cadence but you really won’t see too much difference in terms of clear speed imo. Therefore I rather invest all the points I save from cadence into defensive skills. I couldn’t count the times i get saved by Menhir’s will.

Unfortunately my laptop is too shitty to record any videos :frowning:

I play the game in lowest resolution and window mode nowadays T __ T

Looks like a decent build, I haven’t played for a while and I just bought Crucible, any advice on how to level this guy? Which devotions to go for first?

Glad to see i’m not the only one crazy enough to go for a non-Witch Hunter and non-Warlock poison build.

Out of curiosity could you post an SC of your poison modifiers with auras on (no temp buffs)

Some videos would be nice tbh

Advice for an Occultist hybrid you play.

Invest in DEE early on. CD DEE is one of the strongest skills for levelling.

On the rest i use Fireblast skill from searing ember

I would max out Dreeg’s Evil Eye and get its transmutation Focused Gaze as soon as possible. You would pretty much one shot everything in normal with that. Then you want to grab 1 point in blood burst, terrifying gaze and vile eruption.

Keep in mind that more than 50% of the damage actually comes from you devotion so you want to rush to abomination and grab tainted eruption. That devotion skill, imo, is THE strongest one in the entire devotion tree. It has insane AOE and damage which will make your leveling process even smoother.

The rest is up to you really. Want more damage? Prioritize on curse. Want more survivability? Grab more stats or max shield skills first. Leveling is fun with this build and you’ll see.

Added the screenshot. Looks like I got 1029% poison modifier without any temp buff.

I wish I could record video as well but my laptop can barely handle the game :frowning:

I know them feels

Interesting build i too have been experimenting with poison builds by making non-Witch Hunters to get more survivability. Glad you found a solution. I never could quite prioritize b/w physical resistance and armor.

EDIT:
How quick are you against main campaign Mad queen and nemesis?

Which weapon do you use against the stronger foes- venomlash or plaguebearer?

But can this build kill the fight? :stuck_out_tongue:

I like your build. It seems interesting! Which better shoulders would you use? and what skills do you attach in devotions?

Interesting idea, I’ve never thought about going the psn route since the physical/trauma/bleed WB is so overpowered. Few comments/questions:

1.a) Why soldier over NB? Benefits of Soldier like Cadence and insanely powerful exclusives don’t seem to be utilised here. NB gives more resistance reduction, more cast speed and regeneration, more left click damage… Edit: just noticed you commented on WH. So the block skills are what’s appealing? Your statement that WHs die easily to 2x Nemesis is misleading. WHs are quite tanky if you go the regeneration route, reaching 1000-ish/sec naturally, and can get up to 2500/sec with devotion procs. They also do a lot of flat acid damage, which makes lifesteal good. If you stack enough DA and armor to avoid 1-shots, even hard hitters like Fabius and Mad queen can’t out-dps your regeneration.

1.b) If NB isn’t appealing to you, why not use one of the soldier exclusives instead of Possession? It is pretty awful in comparison.

  1. Why do you consider entrapment immunity such a priority? As a cd-DEE char, you don’t rely on melee lifesteal to keep you alive, which would be the only argument for making it a priority imo (even then, I wouldn’t bother). You can still use your heal/overguard and DEE while entrapped, only stun/freeze will really mess with that plan. I’m willing to bet that Golemborn or a good pair of green boots would work much better.

  2. I see a lot of people maxing Fighting spirit these days, what’s the idea? I don’t see the appeal, it’s a decent OA buff, sure, but only up about 1/3 of the time and requires 15-ish skill points which can be spent elsewhere (maxing Cadence or Blitz would multiply all of flat psn damage from items/devotions by around 3, maxing Blindside reduces enemy DA, giving a similar effect to having Fighting spirit up).

  3. You simply HAVE TO find a way to put 3 devotion points into Ulzuin’s torch. 5% OA is massive for such a small investment, crit damage and move speed aren’t bad either.

  4. Continued from 4, you should really shuffle things around until you reach at least 2450-2500 OA. A lvl 85 green ring of attack would probably do the trick. This should bring you to 2700+ with the Might of Amatok and maybe a Vanguard banner, allowing you to reliably crit purple/red enemies.

  5. A small point, but worth noting imo. You can use the 20% recovery shield augment (cba to look up the name), which allows you to reallocate 4 points from Shield training and Overguard, while keeping you at 100% recovery. They would be better spent maxing Field command because it is the best passive in the game and you should never, under any circumstances, not have it at 12/12.

  6. While we are talking about block recovery, you don’t really utilise on-blick procs, so having 100% recovery is kinda pointless (your high armor already stops most of the damage from mobs, and having 60-ish% recovery with Overguard is enough to block all attacks in 1v1 fights with bosses. Because of this, Shieldmaiden is meh, and the augment that increases block chance seems more valuable.

Because the goal for this build is to be tanky enough to endure the last 20 waves of gladiator crucible. While NB does provide more damage, a witch hunter could have more trouble surviving if the spawn of nemesis isn’t lucky. The gearing is also more demanding for a end game witch hunter build imo. Also, I always wanted to do a witchblade build without going for the fotm build route which uses Markovian full set. This build can easily be done with much worse gears.

Possession gives me good damage and mitigation and chaos res. It’s overall a much better skill than just getting some extra OA imo.

It’s simply not worth the risk. I want to make sure that I could get out any situation 100% of the time since my goal is to beat wave 150 every time I run a crucible. Those entrapment could last a long time and if my overguard happens to be on CD, there is a high risk that my character would rip.

Because this is a DOT build and I believe the DOT that you inflict when having a higher OA maintains that way throughout the duration. So fighting spirit is actually quite efficient. Cadence really doesn’t boost my damage too much comparing to the massive dot that I could do with my spells. When you can only wack at at max 3 enemy at once, it just feels quite inadequate when comparing to the effect of skills like tainted eruption…

I suppose if I really need the crit I could look into that. I may tweak the tree a bit to see what I could forgo. Thanks for bringing it up.

As you can see from the screenshot, I have 2300 currently. But that does not include the -115 DA from my curse and -140 from scorpion. So essentially I am sitting at 2555 OA.

I couldn’t find the augment that you mentioned here… could you provide me with a link?

The max block recovery is simply to have an extra layer of defense when my heal or Menhir’s will is on CD. The goal of this build is 1)low requirement 2)does good damage but obviously nothing like a full set ultos build 3)being able to comfortably survive crucible 150 waves.

Actually the shoulder that I use right now is quite nice. It gives some auto heal when my health drops low so I might just keep it.

You would assign tainted eruption to dreeg’s infinite gaze, scorpion to blitz, manticore to DEE and Dryad to bloody pox.

I would still use plague bearer since 25% resistance reduction is a lot.

I’ve only done Mad queen once and I think that I did it under a min. Nemesis, not sure since I put this character straight into the crucible.

 I actually forgot about this song!
