[1.0.0.8/9] Beginner-Friendly 2H Lightning Elementalist: "The Storm Bolter"

I’m not a fan of that devotion progression TBH. Tempest has been underwhelming ever since mines were changed to share a CD for it rather than each mine having its own Tempest proc CD (so you can’t shotgun enemies with tempest mines anymore), you really want Hawk in this build, and Empty Throne is going to give you crucial resists that Owl won’t. The Spear of the Heavens proc is pretty underwhelming at best in my experience. Ghoul seems OK at least - while we already have a circuit breaker in the form of Blast Shield it does add in ADCtH which is always good.

I’d do something more like this: https://www.grimtools.com/calc/4ZDDvXkZ you can always move the point from the yellow crossroads into the Spear proc instead if you so choose, but I’d honestly rather have the 5% health personally.

Is there an un-updated version of this build? I don’t have the expansion and I was very interested in this noob friendly build from Comendium V.

Can I find this build anywhere without the new updates?

Thanks.

I’m not really sure what to do with devotions and what to put my remaining skills into. I’m thinking I need more defensive skills from here on out because the damage is there but surviveability is going down in Elite. Seems like all the best devotions for this build are in the expansion like Quill and Ultos :frowning:

Delayed response on my part but I posted a calc link of what I’d do with vanilla-only devotions in the previous page: https://www.grimtools.com/calc/4ZDDvXkZ

Skills-wise this would look about the same but you would stop at 32 in Demo mastery just to get blast shield. Gear would be changed up quite a bit, however; If others are interested in it I can knock together a full calc but honestly the AoM expansion is really worth getting if you enjoy this game :stuck_out_tongue:

Wow Mournslayer, thanks so much for posting that! I definitely need to fix my devotions, I’m currently level 81 running through Act 2 ultimate, nothing has been too hard so far, if so I mostly just kite and wait for blast shield CD. This is definitely a great beginner build.

As for gear I’m just trying to cap resists for the most part and im trying to have around 500 cunning so I can use that 2h lightning bow if I want to switch away from melee.

I had to double reply to be able to post my build, sorry

Here’s my build, I just plan on maxing out flashbang with my remaining points. https://www.grimtools.com/calc/Q2z68El2

I have grown bored with POE and have decided to give Grim Dawn a chance (again).

I will be following this build guide as it is very well written and it sounds like a fun build. Nice to see the op is still around and active as I’m sure I will have questions!

Wish me luck because I thought this game was really hard the 1st time I played it a year or so ago.

I was wondering, are you still working on the leveling guide?

I am enoying this build - much better survivability for a relative newcomer to Grim Dawn than my original Witchhunter. Thanks for all the good pointers.

I have had to change one thing, probably due to an Ashes of Malmouth update. The Devotion screen would not let me assign Arcane Bomb to Thermite Mines, so I went with Flashbang at the attachment. Works pretty well there.

Keep posting great builds!

I really wanted to thank you for this detailed guide. I’ve only came across one other build guide here that was able to hold my hand and help me through Grim Dawn. As I made my way through Ultimate I wanted to have a second build but was frustrated and discouraged with how most guides are here so I quit playing. I guess I’ve become too spoiled with the detailed guides that poe has, but I’ve taken a break from PoE due to its latest league. I only play ARPG’s but I couldn’t make a build or learn the game mechanics to save my life. I do eventually learn enough if there’s a good foundation someone has laid out and once I’ve tried several different builds, but just linking Grim Tools and end game gear like most guides do here just doesn’t work for me personally. So thank you very much!

I just started playing this game a month ago and found this guide to use as my first character. But I’m curious about something. The guide says to bind Arcane Bomb to Thermite Mines but Thermite Mines doesn’t show up as an ability I can bind it to. At this point, I have an artifact granting me Gavel of Justice and I put Arcane Bomb on that and I have Elemental Storm bound to my Primal Strike which I’m using. I’m playing through the DLC and switching between that and Elite difficulty depending on what I feel like and I just hit level 72.

This is due to a change from a few updates back that means pets or pet-like entities can’t have other pets/pet-like devotion skills bound to them.

If that’s the case, what skill should I bind it to then or should I just drop it completely? I have it on Gavel of Justice right now but I won’t always have that since it’ll be gone when I replace this relic.

ok- very late to this party and a total newb on this forum - but finished playing vanilla game long ago- and came back to play the expansion Mammoth. Only played on Normal/Veteran so far - level 57 Elementalist. Have read a few threads, “utubes”, etc. on what my character build was close to just and to remember what the game is supposed to look/be like. In this thread (which is super - thanks OP) I noticed the build is still putting “wind devil” in Window’s “proc” ( arcane bomb) - which will no longer work. I was wondering about using Stun Jacks instead and no longer using Wind Devil much at all - so then the next question would be what to do with all the points you put in Wind devil?

You still need the Wind Devil for the Raging Tempest modifier (which also reduces resistances)

But, I do not see Widow bound to WD, it seems to be bound to Wendigo totem https://www.grimtools.com/calc/a2d7bg1N

yep - hmm… must have been looking at a different set up - was going back and forth between several. Another question before I respec everything as I have gotten into Mammoth enough to have both respect potions and I now realize I did not understand the depth of the game when previously playing a few years ago. I am having some difficulty understanding how the procs on the devotions work. I currently have the proc “Flame torrent” on the devotion Fiend very levelled up currently on Cannister bomb = 17/25 - so I want to keep that proc - correct- or will it disappear when I do the respec or change to a different skill? If not, can I put it on Prime strike ( main attack on LMB) ? or another skill ( Elementalist) that will use it the best (maybe Thermite bomb). I have figured out my devotions to be Widow (Stun Jacks), Fiend (??), Empty Throne, Candle, Eel, Rhowan’s Crown (Storm totem), and 3 into Kraken - 2 more to go there ASAP. Then - on to some of the more powerful devotions ( Hand of Ultos). Have figured out how to redistribute Attribute points to use the best Jewellery/Gear and it lools like this: Physique =984 , Cunning=528 , spirit= 378 at my level 59 with the Shaman master full and the Demolition master at 32. Or should I decrease the cunning/spirit in favor of more Physique now and just increase them slowly as I level up? I believe those attributes would leave me a bit “squishy” - I think that is the correct term- so would need very good defensive gear/use ointments/etc for boss fights. I did find a great ranged 2 handed gun (Sparkthower of alacrity level 55). Look forward to opinions as I don’t really know what I am doing yet- but learning. LOL

The devotion skills remain at the current rank and experience, even if you bind it to another skill, or even spec out of the entire constellation. So don’t worry about that.

Just get spirit and cunning up to req and rest physique

I did send you wrong build link btw LOL here it is https://www.grimtools.com/calc/a2Ej887V
there is one misstake it in, raging tempest should be kept at 12/12

OK- not going crazy then - LOL. SO ya, wind devil is put onto Arcane bomb proc in that linked build- which can no longer happen. So, what would be best to put onto Arcane bomb proc then? And again- can you use a proc like Flame torrent on Prime strike? Does it work well? or better to use it with Thermite mines? And use Utos when I get it with Prime strike later on. Should I use Thunderous strike or prime strike or not = reduced power but faster shooting? sorry for all the questions.

Just make sure you have Arcane bomb and Elemental storm bound to skills that make them proc often and in a way that you are somewhat reliant on where they will be casted. Same with Ultos, since it only procs on crits.

Use Thunderous strike for spam.

You can see which devotion skills that can be bound to given skill by simply investigating grim tools.

Btw, for a ranged shaman, wouldnt Vindicator be better choice? This guide was originally written for pre-AoM where there were no Inquisitors?

Vindicator? You mean use savage and not primal?

Vindicator = Shaman + Inquisitor so yes Savagery since you wanna have WPS
