[1.0.0.8/9] Beginner-Friendly 2H Lightning Elementalist: "The Storm Bolter"

That would be FANTASTIC! Very kind of you! How do we go from here? (Never really interacted with anyone ingame, so I have no clue …)

I am curious, with the expansion coming out on Wednesday … will this build change a lot? Or will it stay the same but just 15 more character levels.

Reason I ask is because I have played PoE in the past and when an expansion came out, things could change in such a way that a character build could become worse or better.

Don’t worry it’s very straightforward, I sent you a PM.

This build is a lot of fun, I have made it further with this build than any of the others I have tried.

Thanks!

Hi,

I saw you change the devotion from Behemoth to Chariot of the Dead.
Is this a must change?

Also how is Spear of the Heavens vs Ultos?

I played Diablo 3 and realized that if a weapon didn’t have a slot for a gem… it was pretty much worthless. I’m using the build found here and I’m pretty much face rolling thru 15 levels. I’ve died once when multiple bosses (Guys with starts above them) attacked me at one time. I’m playing “Veteran” but may push up the difficulty. Got a few questions tho…:

  1. If my current TH weapon has bonuses to lightning / electric attacks, is it still better overall than a weapon w/o electric bonuses but shows a +18 overall dam per second description?

  2. Is the gear I’m looking for mostly a balance of resistances and buffing electrical stats?

  3. Somehow the small round map in the upper right is gone. How do I get it back?

  4. I have found some “cracked load stones” yet I have not come across a place in any of the villages where I can craft the pieces together to make a full load stone. Does that come latter in the game? Should I just install the cracked one in my weapon now?

5 When at the contact in town that holds items you arent using, is there a faster way of transferring the items into his crate from my on person crate? I right click on the items on my character, but nothing happens and I have to slowly left click each one over to his crate.

Thanks for helping a Grim Dawn noob!!!

  1. There is a golden button with two >> pointing downwards immediately to the right of your energy bar. Clicking this will toggle your mini map between hidden, small, and large. This should bring it back for you.

  2. There is a button in your inventory next to the auto sort (below your pants slot on character sheet) that is called complete components. This will automatically complete any partial components in your bags.

  3. Shift + left click will move the items from your inventory to the stash.

The other questions I’m not too sure on, I will let a more experienced player answer that.

Hi i see you have updated your grimtools with skills + devotion which is not in the guide, should i follow that build or the guide itself?

“FACTIONS
Kymon’s Chosen is much better than Death’s Vigil in this build. The Chosen have some crucial pieces of gear that buff lightning damage, including the weapon this build is named for!”

I have what might be a stupid question. I chose Krymon’s Chosen as the faction to fight for / with. Was that correct, or was I supposed to choose Death’s Vigil, so when I kill Krymon’s… their loot drops are better suited for the lightning build???

Thanks!

The devotions section says to buy back Jackal after getting Behemoth. I was confused by this so I did some looking around and discovered the constellations can be self sustaining in terms of affinity requirements. However, I cannot get it to work.

I’ve completed Behemoth (2 red, 3 green) and I have the red crossroad. Behemoth requires 3 red. That should be three. It will not let me buy back Jackal.

You chose correctly. The gear in question is on the Krymon’s Chosen faction vendor. It would be rude to try to get it by killing him.

I’m not sure why it will not let you buyback jackal then - perhaps you have another constellation that requires the red?

Also, just kind of a blanket announcement, I haven’t had time to answer questions on this build and don’t have plans to update it for the expansion. However, it should still provide a good “stepping stone” on the way to making a proper Ultos-based lightning elementalist.

I’m trying this as my first character, and I’m level 59 in A2 elite now. Would it be viable to use primal strike either as a second auto attack or a nuke as a clearing skill? Thermite mines with reckless tempest just feels awful to me. I don’t know if losing the -lightning resist from thermite mines is too much though. Thanks

On thermite mines with tempest: This build is now several game versions outdated, as I’ve said several times now (including in the post immediately before yours). I do not recommend taking tempest for this build anymore. You NEED the RR from thermite mines. However, reckless tempest with thermites is bad - switch to elemental storm instead IMO.

On PS as a nuke: It could work. I’ve seen a few elementalist and vindicator variants using it for such, but i haven’t setup a calc myself for this.

Thanks, I’ll pick up elemental storm and start leveling it on the side to switch over to.

Looking forward to the update, when you get it out…

This is my first real build after a normal/discovery playthrough and it’s been a blast up until ultimate.
I am really looking forward for your update as well, when you got the time to get to it!

@Mournslayer :
Thank you so much for the build.
It helped me a lot in my Grim Dawn adventures (I’m not finished yet, but if I managed to went so far in the game it is thanks to you ^^).
And thank you for keeping it updated as you do.

So, it must be a lot of work (a huge amount of work), but it is a really appreciated one!

Welp, it’s been a long time coming and after postponing this for a long time…I finally managed to update the first post for AoM. And I can confirm firsthand that Sparkthrowers are AMAZING weapons that everyone ought to try at least once. I’m falling in love with this build all over again

Big shout-out to the many folks on the “exceptionally classy officially unofficial GD Discord” who kept pestering me with questions about this build, which is what prompted me to finally update this!

Thanks for the update! Having a blast with this build so far.

Question: Is it viable for those of us without AoM?

I’ve kind of been winging it on the devotions and have not got to the point where I have access to faction gear yet…

For others in the same boat, I found this info on a 2H melee elementalist thread:

"It’s not just 50 points instead of 55 - without expansion you won’t have many convenient constellations.

grimtools.com/calc/DV9rmQPZ

This should do, but to be honest I don’t like this setup that much. The route itself is very similar to the one listed in my first post:

Candle -> Eel -> Kraken -> Owl -> Tempest -> whatever -> Spear of the Heavens"
