So I was thinking about a prospective build for an AAR/AetherChaos warlock leveraging the Black Flame Covenant Set. Here’s my initial attempt at using the char builder, have not tested it yet. I had decided against using Tainted Power in order to leverage the Aether bonuses. Is this good? Bad? I’m almost certain the devotions are terrible.
The items you mentioned are good for a build that is focused on using the AAR transmuter to convert aether to chaos damage. You’d probably prefer different itemization for an aether-based AAR character.
Below is a grimtools snapshot of my current AAR warlock (now in elite difficulty) who uses the chaos damage transmuter for AAR. You’ll want to do a “weapon switch” to see the weapon / offhand actually in use. Key info you might find helpful, or at least interesting, is how differently skill points might be allocated for a chaos damage AAR build and how devotions are (also) fundamentally different.

Dying god is a solid tier 3 constellation choice for a chaos AAR character. Also, the vitality damage bonuses you tend to get from the chaos AAR variant makes taking the twin fangs celestial skill quite attractive.
My sense is that chaos damage AAR builds are about to get quite a bit stronger with the expansion, as an increase in devotion points will allow access to the acid spray celestial and/or to other and better defensive options.
(I dunno if I’m missing something, but I think ye forgot the link :p)
I someone reconsidered the Tainted Power thing, removing a point from Second Rite and getting TP with it. Also, Wendigo’s Mark to Bloody Pox (why I didn’t do that in the fist place is beyond me, durrrr). Still kinda waffling on the others.
Here’s a tentative update: http://www.grimtools.com/calc/M2gRo6Ny
Oops! (fixed)
Damage conversion works only one time.
If you don’t have specific MIs, greens or Badge of Mastery yet. Don’t plan it in the build. (It is very hard to find a specific affix for greens)
This is my setup. http://www.grimtools.com/calc/DV9wYxNj
33% dmg absorbtion, 15% physical resistance and super OP procs from Mark of Apostate are crazy. It can be very tanky even has only 800 armor.
Flexible with high stun and trap resist + average freeze and slow resist.
It may use many legendary, but those legendary can get a lot easier than MIs and specific greens.

Here’s another prospective warlock build, leveraging the suggestion by KoalaeiO. Tried to keep Greens to a minimum because of how difficult it is to get. Could be twinked further by a more experienced player than I, but I like to think this could be quite fuctional and fun. Bloody Pox+Aetherfire and Curse+Bomb would pull double-duty as crowd control and trash disposal, and Chaos Ray is pure Single-target. Points probably need rethinking to allow Solael’s witchfire and Second Rite. Survivability-wise I think it’s in a good place with maxed resists, 9000+ HP, Blood of Dreeg, Mirror of Eroctes, and Maiven’s Sphere.
Thoughts? Mocking laughter?
You wont be able to sustain AAR with this setup. Doom bolt is meh, drop it for Devastation. To tell the thue, id rather drop chaos thingy and wear 4 piece Iscandra set, Codex of Lies , Wrath of ascendant and Iscandra balance relic. For rings one Alberteich duality and Band of ethernal haunt. Better survivability and perfect ray sustain,no pita against chtonic, okaysh performance in PoV .

I have tested this ofc a lot less offensive, more defensive setup but it held it’s feet against Fabius easily.
A damage that is converted once can’t be converted again, that is kinda mixed in your build. We get a nice chaos/aether Warlock with maxed Devastation. Both damage types are buffed quite nicely and Clairvoyant set bonus + AD ring resets cooldowns A LOT so spamming Devastation and Mirror constantly is frequent.
All the skills we use are pretty much equally converted to Chaos/Aether. 32% damage absorption from MSoP and Posession.
Again Clairvoyance granted by the full set perfectly solves our energy problems and keeps us sustained.

I’m still kinda focused on the chaos ray black flame set thing, even just as a gimmick. The aether damage was primarily for the aetherfire proc, but I recognize it’s very minor, as between aetherfire, arcane bomb, bloody box and curse of frailty trash will never be a problem. I tweaked the build a bit, trying to keep it relatively tanky while giving it enough energy to use AAR for tough targets and keep aetherfire/arcane bomb on BP/CoF for area-of-effect crowd control. Still likely a gimmick build, but I think it’s in a decent enough place.

I Don’t use the Black Flame Set as I wanted to convert elemental damage to chaos to give me great AOE damage. Single Target Damage isn’t as high as it could be, as I only have 178% cast speed. Uses some energy pots in Vanilla, would definitely have energy issues in Crucible if you maintained AAR to long. Enemies with stuns like Valdaraan are annoying but manageable on hardcore.
