[1.0.2.0] HC Rune Mage (Cold/Fire Mage Hunter)

Grimtools Build

This started as a project of “I want to use both rune skills as primary damage sources, efficacy be damned” and this is what came of it. The overall damage is nothing obscene, but its solid. There is a little ramp up time by virtue of the skill mechanics involved.

Runes of Hagarrad and Kalastor have cooldowns of 1.7s with this setup. The true beauty of that lies in the Ignition skill. Ignition as skilled gives a stun duration of 2.8s, meaning almost everything is getting stunlocked and eating all the damage you can churn out. This doubles down as awesome survivability in hardcore as very little can actually fight back. Just be sure that your skill usage in fights is Kalastor THEN Hagarrad and Inquisitor Seal (also be mindful that there is a short ~0.25s delay between placing Kalastor and Ignition going off). Sprinke in either Word of Pain or Storm Box for devotion proccing and thats that.

The other nice thing about runes its theres no huge dps loss if you have to kite something around, just keep spamming and your screen will keep lighting up. Tanking ability here is decent enough via all the slows, MoE and Inquisitor Seal.

For Devotions, I’m sure some pro can educate me and do better but this setup worked out well. At first I used Attak Seru…wound up being not worth it at all so I dropped it part of the way through ultimate. The current setup does far more damage.

Gear isn’t “make or break”, the build can function as-is without any of it really. The two Anderos’ Amplifiers really helps Kalastor’s damage out. There are other weapon options like Moonglow that buff Hagarrad but I found bringing Kalastor up to Hagarrad’s level to be better all around. Alkamos’ rings could boost Hagarrad’s damage more by converting more pierce to cold if you want more damage. Eternity would be a solid relic choice if you prefer it.

The biggest thing to change build wise would probably be to drop points in Inquisitor and go for Star Pact in Arcanist. You’d only really lose the -resist of Aura of Censure and make up the damage with faster rune casting. Resist reduction could be an issue though.

For leveling, as gear isn’t important you could start running this around late normal. Biggest issue would be getting artifact handling maxxed ASAP. Until then I leveled with PRM.

Playing this wound up being a lot more fun than I thought it would be. It was painfully awkward at early levels and I almost gave up on it.

Edit: The absurd light show of damage:

This is similair to what I’m building, you bet me to completing it and posting though :frowning: lol

How did you deal with the Shaper of Flesher boss at the end in Elite, even with 700+ armor (98% absorb), 21% damage absorb, 83% resist across the board, 260 flat absorb and 10000 life I get killed in 2/3 hits…

My irritatingly simple answer: I really didn’t touch AoM on any character until i was max level. My level 85 druid got to Ugdenbog then I stopped progressing until i hit 100.

So you already had the Runebinder gear before doing AoM? I don’t see how 44 more skill points would increase survivability when I already have the core damage and survivability skills maxed…

Except the amulet maybe, cant remember now, but I was missing one of the pieces at first…and I have 4 or so of the crappy crossbow. Crucible is OP. Its almost less lame to just make stuff with grim stash at this point.

I even have a mule character with a bunch of green pants and boots with stonehide prefix for easy resists.

I’m very impressed you made it to lv. 100 on HC with that particle setting, literally can’t even see if you’re standing in a ground pool or not.

I credit my itchy MoE finger and never, ever standing still lol.

I’d almost always drop runes and take a few steps back, always forcing things to walk towards me if I could.

So I just ran into BenJaar with my version of this build and he was piss easy and I don’t even have any of the Runebinder gear yet.

What Nemesis have you taken on and how have you fared?

This is my build currently if you’re interested

That screenshot is giving me eye cancer. How did you not get blinded by this :D:D:D

I have been working on a really similar build with slightly different focus on skills.

Any other gear suggestion instead of double stonehide + kings ?

You, you, I like you

that’s what I do too, going to AoM when I feel like my build is ready for the slaughter that is Malmouth
