[1.0.5.1 Infiltrator] Blades of the Luminari - Nex/Ortus Elemental DW/wps 170 viable

https://www.grimtools.com/calc/vNQek3MN if you click the book in the bottom left hand corner of this link it will bring up the skill tree. You can see the devotion setup from there, and which skills that I have them bound to.

I am using Fiend(bound to Beronath’s Fury), Viper, Bat (Bound to Storm Box), Ghoul, Quill, Scholar’s Light, Hawk, Owl, Toad… Then partial completions of Rhowan’s Crown(Bound to Ring of Steel), Blind Sage (Bound to Amarasta’s Blade burst), Revenant, and Ulzuins Torch

It does help new players if build guides include a step by step for the Devotions though I think. Yes, grimtools shows you all of them and what skills are bound to what, but how you get from the first devotion point to the last is another story. A simple take constellation A then constellation B then constellation C, etc, would help a lot. Saves the new player hours of time trying to work out how you did it.

Posting the build is the worst part. And if it gets too tedious you end up hating your own build(with some exceptions who love to write a scholar’s essay on a build  ). I reply if someone asks how, but i’d rather let the player discover. I played around a lot with grimcalc/tool and it’s fun to get the hang of it

To a certain extent I agree Superfluff. I’ve spent many an hour deciding on what constellations I want to take for a new build. On the downside though, those many hours are not spent playing the game.

My feeling is new players looking at the guides want to get stuck in and start playing. Heck, when I look at guides I want to get stuck in and start playing, not spend time working out how the OP set up the guide’s devotion system - which is what I end up doing since I want to know where I’m going to put those points when. I personally find it a bit frustrating that a lot of detail is often given about why this skill is used or that gear, but devotions are totally left out apart from grimtools.

I’d prefer new players to learn about the devotion system by playing the game and seeing how the system works, get a general feeling for the mechanics. Then, if they want to, they can start playing around with grimtools.

While I agree on the wanting to get stuck straight in, I cannot see new players (well maybe very, very new players that don’t know how hard it is to get specific items) trying to make a set build due to the items that are usually required and by the time they start to have some items and are looking at a build to try then they probably have an idea on how the devotions work

I think they would not do that if you post a step by step guide for devotions, as many would just follow that to the letter and never consider other devotions, thus never realizing pro and contra of any devotions for that build.

Turn the question back on itself. If you were a new player, knew nothing about the game what would you do? Come into this section of the forum and search for beginner friendly builds or look in the compendium and other threads here to find a build that looks interesting whether it’s suitable for a beginner or not? The compendium only has 2 builds labelled as beginner and those are both a bit out of date being 1.0.3.1 and 1.0.3.2 respectively and newest beginner build in this part of the forum is 1.0.4.0. If you know nothing about the game you have no idea how hard or easy it will be to get end-game items.

What if you can’t find a beginner build that you like? What would you do then?

Naasir, yes that’s possible, but I think/hope that the complexity the devotion system adds to the game encourages players to explore options using grimtools.

I do plan on adding a section for leveling including devotions and gearing possibilities for early game… hopefully by this weekend. My work load is balancing out a bit so I should start having a bit more free time

I definitely agree that it can be overwhelming for newer players as the sheer depth and number of options can be too much to initially wrap one’s head around. I have walked several people (who were long time gamer friends I introduced to the game) through different possibilities in voice chat.

But as a player progresses that depth that was overwhelming at first becomes the draw. Speaking for myself at least, I tend to overthink/analyze many builds… only to scrap the whole thing once it doesn’t mean a certain standard. Then I quickly move on to crafting another one. While I’ve spent about 500 hours in game, I’ve probably spent 200-300 in grimtools. I also have many more hour reading the forums, taking various players perspectives and strategies to build on my own. The crafting of builds has become just as, if not more rewarding to me than even playing the game. I hope to spend more time sharing them by managing my time a little better.

thank you looking forward to it iwill level dw as second char then.

As a new player, who was pro in 3 other games and have made guides on my own, 3 things i look for the most in this game.

How to do early game including levels items reputation aressitances pre level20-50.
Do i need specific level or gear to make the guide work?if so where to farm it.
If you check my post i already askquestions about devotions sincei dont need x stats because i got lucky item drop and the like, so i start conversation and talk about it but when I NEED IT AND I ENJOY IT.
Having some guide that’s done just to be " done " and then be lazy never update it or make it newbie friendly is the worst.

One would assume older/experianced players should do more for new players and hope they stick around, if you gonna make a guide only for 5% of the population( i know its probably more then 5% but you get the idea ) then you might as well just share it with them ondiscord or via pm.

Guides should be oriented mostly to new/brand new players. Therefore be detailed for early game.

To add to that press control +f or search and type "beginner or Friendly " in guides there is only 1-3 that pop up.

Go do the same for any other game on forums it will be much higher like 30-50%.

There is lack of material for new players esp up to date.
I have to go ask " hey is this guide up to date" ah no its 9 months old x item and skill got changed go make new hero (rip 20-30 levels and time wasted)
etc,
To give you an example i like to play cold/frost builds and if possible mele 1h+shield or DW char, i asked for a build about that ,got only 1 answer, rest was mostly like, make new hero or this build instead etc, one new player only tried to help me but he was like " i only used x x skill to level 52 that i’mright now "

in other words i got 0 feedback on what i wanted and expeiranced players give me guides made by them for totaly different build/class as it was better, hold up 2 of them req me to have completed the game or have rare items, oops.

i’m playing
http://www.grimdawn.com/forums/showthread.php?t=63586

and look how awesome it is, i have ton of fun, and i already ask questions and change dev points and the like based on what i have/need right now.
But it helped me great deal on first levels and i’m having tons of fun instead of leveling a hero to be told build is out of date and i have to delete it now.
Leveling Guide

There are quite a lot of efficient and different ways to level and a lot of players do it in their own way so i’d like to refrain from ruling out anyone else’s leveling choices, if it works for you then go on with it.

In this particular character i leveled as 2H/DW ranged depending on what i’ve found throughout. I used Savagery and rushed Storm Spread as my main AoE and gradually getting help from Wind Devil and Rune of Hagarrad as CC and additional AoE/proc sources.

Around mid 40’s i switched into the end game build’s track.

Pre Level 30 : Click

I’d like to advise another path that i have taken many times while leveling class combos that involves Shaman, since Shaman is the main focus whether paired with Demo/Soldier/Inquisitor, we can prioritize it throughout the leveling process and it more than enough to carry us through.

Start with Devouring Swarm and level it to a satisfactory point that you’ll one shot all the trash.
Move up to Grasping Vines followed by Entangling Vines. I also advise putting 1 points into Briarthorn and Ground Slam as CC and aggro taker away from you.

Note thet energy sustain might be an issue up to a certain point so positioning enemies in a linear way to snipe them with Devouring Swarm is an efficient and essential trick.

Pre Leve 26 : Click

After that you can respec into Wind Devil and Storm Totem as shown below.

Pre Level 30 : Click

Afterwards we can start filling points into necessary AoE and RR in Wind Devil, tankiness through Heart of the Wild followed by starting on Inquisitor tree and acquiring Lightning Tether.

my point is look at the above example does it realy take more then 10-15min to add this to a guide to help 80% of the players??

People who make guides, put your self in the new player shoes. At first glance this game seems very "elitist " oriented and non friendly to new players, that means casuals and most people won’t buy it or play it aka it will die not have good population= no updates from dev’s and the like.
So if you enjoy the game and you want it to be alive, try to do materials and stuff that will appear to the casuals/new players.

To give you an example, i played a game called BLC( Blood line champions ) that game died, for many reasons but one being non friendly to new players and only having hardcore population, i posted a guide about the hero i played very detailed and newbie friendly + leaving my skype for new players to ask more questions and the like, in 48hours was top rated/sticky and in a week most read/commented guide, my english is horrable and i’m not good coach or teachter, how ever the hero i played got +36% population bump in just a week, this is a big deal.
Now the game is dead and new version of it is popular called Battlerite, you porbably heard/know that one.
The game is not as complicated as this one or need as much help for new players but still a good guide can make a ton of difference.
Just my 2 cents you don’t have to agree with me or what ever but as a person who saw my beloved game die, and not having chance to go to dreamhack and play it again and have ton of fun, i tell you do not be in the same position with this awesome game called Grim Dawn.

Some tips for leveling any inquisitor builds:

Just start with Storm box. It is just too powerful at low level. Then push to Word of renewal. Don’t start with Nightblade, in my experience it is just not very good at low level.

At 10 it should look like:
-Inquisitor 15
-Storm box 10
-Lightning Tether 2
-Deadly aim 1
-Word of renowal 3

At 20 it should look like:
-Inquisitor 20
-Storm box 16
-Lightning Tether 12
-Deadly aim 2
-Word of renowal 8
-Vigor 3

At 30 it should look like:
-Inquisitor 32
-Storm box 16
-Lightning Tether 12
-Deadly aim 5
-Word of renowal 9
-Vigor 6
-Steel Resolve 6
-Inquisitor Seal 5

At 40 it should look like:
-Inquisitor 40
-Storm box 16
-Lightning Tether 12
-Deadly aim 5
-Word of renowal 10
-Vigor 9
-Steel Resolve 9
-Inquisitor Seal 12
-Arcane Empowerement 12

Devotions
Start with:
-Crossroad Eldritch
-Quill
-Scholar’s Light
-Rowan’s crown (bind to storm box)
-Owl
-Toad

Gear
Look mainly for:
-%Lightning/Electrocute
-Cooldown reduction
-Resistances

Respec
Somewhere between level 30 and 50, and when you have appropriate gear, you will want to respec to this thread build. Some thing like that:
-Inquisitor 40
-Storm box 16
-Lightning Tether 12
-Deadly aim 5
-Word of renowal 10
-Vigor 9
-Steel Resolve 9
-Inquisitor Seal 12
-Arcane Empowerement 12

-Nightblade 15
-Dual Blades 1
-Belgothian’s shears 1
-Amarasta’s Quick cut 1
-Amarasta’s Blade Burst 3
-Lethal Assault 2
-Shadow Strike 1
-Veil of Shadow 3
-Night’s chill
-Phantasmal armor 1

Don’t need to respec the devotions.

Before respec, you should prepare some gear with the following attributes:
-%Cold/Frostburn and flat Cold/frostburn damage
-Attack converted to health damage
-Attack speed
-Offensive ability and Defensive ability
-Resistances

P.S: Sorry, no grimtool links nor images as I don’t have a high enough post count

Thank you ,if you wish you can grimtool links on pm and i will add them, i think you have explained enough and they are not needed.

I’m putting together a leveling guide for a more nightblade dual wield leveling build that leads right into the build. I even started a new character so I could make videos while leveling it.

Awesome my cousin want’s to play this build as nightblade over the weekend :)!

Cool. I am really interested in seeing a leveling guide for DW nightblade. DW nightblade at low level has always be a pain to level for me: low clear speed, no good AOE.

It should be enough until Valinov post his leveling guide. I will edit my post after I have 3 posts (just one missing :)).

Nightblade is super fast for leveling. Aoe is not the greatest, but it’s decent and tbh a lot of trash should be skipped if you wanna be speedy. Max abb/la, night’s chill, and ss. 1x ABB should more or less kill everything even in elite and maxed SS provides a lot of single target damage

Flame torrent is very useful early on too especially if you have mistborn

Big thanks to everyone who helped i have now a link how to levelup and very detailed.
I’m so hyped to start leveling right now.
I will go Nightblade !

For sure! I like going for Guile personally for the extra flat damage, but Mistborn is a solid choice as well.

I start posting a fairly detailed 1-55 leveling/gearing section after I make it home from work today… 10-12 hours from now.

1-60 leveling/devotions covered in second post.

Been trying out this build now that I finally got the expansion and trying everything out, its been fun so far. Even though the Steps of Torment were less than nice when it came to grabbing an upgrade to weapons.

Closing in on level 70+ now, and I was curious when its best to switch word of pain to the storm box?
