[1.2.1.6] [Ranged] Beginner, SSF, Unconvetional Chaos Word of Pain, Vampirris build

[Ranged] [1.2.1.6] Chaos WoP (Cripptid)

* Damage: Chaos
* Active Skills: Word of Pain, Flames of Ignaffar

Hello everyone, today I want to share a Lightweight Chaos Word of Pain and Ignaffar Beginner build.

Why it is Unconventional?

The skill Word of Pain is usually used only as a Debuff, the last node Death Sentence is quite excellent at cutting the enemy resistances, while the damage part is often neglected due to being unimpressive.

But I have decided to try to use it as my main source of damage.

Why it is beginner friendly?

The main items used to empower Word of Pain are easy to obtain, the main ingredients are two Vampirris scepters which can be bought from the Solael Faction, all you need is a bit of reputation farm, you can get Revered level of reputation naturally if you beat the game on all difficulties.

The second item needed is a Conduit of Runic Whispers, it needs to be crafted, the blueprint can be bought in the Morgoneth’s dungeon at the Vendor called Yurri, the blueprints he sells are somewhat random, you will probably need to reset his stock a couple of times by going back to the previous area and wait there for 10 seconds and check his stock again, during my SSF play-through i got both the Amulet and 2 Vampirris before i even got lvl 94 to equip them.

I deliberately did not use random Mythical Legendary items during this run.

Pros:

  1. Great AoE damage, Word of Pain range is insane, with one click it hits half of the screen

  2. Decent HP and CC resistance thanks to the Inquisitor’s Vigor, I was actually impressed by this character’s survivability, but when I thought about why it’s so durable it made sense.
    (1) It has 18% Damage Absorption from Possession
    (2) It has quite decent amount of Physical Resistance (22%) P. Res. mostly from Blood of Dreeg
    (3) It has decent HP regen from Blood of Dreeg and Inquisitor’s Seal , 1100 passive HP regen may not look impressive, but it’s a nice safety net in case your character cannot rely on Life Leech (While having a Damage Reduction debuff, life leech becomes unreliable, or if you are under Fumble, Frozen, Slowed, Stunned, or when fighting a Life Leech resistant enemies like Chthonian’s or Aether Vanguard behemoths.)
    (4) Quite excellent Life Leech ~23%
    (5) 230 Damage Absorption from Inquisitor’s Seal , many do not like using seal, but the Flat Damage Absorption it grants is so good I cannot resist the urge to use it, it protects you against DoT’s, multiple damage sources, it grants Elemental Resistance and HP regen. I love it.
    (5) The Flames of Ignaffar used in this build as a support skill also applies Fumble, Fumble makes all Melee enemies miss 50% of their attacks. (It’s as strong as it’s sounds)
    (6) Word of Pain applies Impaired Aim which makes Ranged enemies miss their attacks, it’s more useful than I initially thought, for example it makes Messenger’s Meteors completely miss you.

  3. Great Chaos Resistance Reduction (from WoP and Curse of Frailty)

  4. Enables Hit and Run tactics, The Word of Pain debuff lasts for a long time, you can mark your enemies and retreat, cheesy but very effective.

Cons:

  1. Weak Single target damage
  2. Relatively Slow leveling
  3. Low Offensive Ability

Some details

I used the Incendiary Casque to buff Flames of Ignaffar, the Ignaffar’s Conversion from Tainted Flame node converts all Fire damage to Chaos, It may not look impressive, just 80 Fire damage, but Ignaffar strikes 3 times a second, 6 times with maximum casting speed which my character has decent amount (181% casting speed).

Just a reminder, over-leveling a skill to the maximum level is greatly encouraged, a level 26 Flames of Ignaffar deals 2 to 3 times more damage than a level 16 Flames of Ignaffar, same story with the Word of Pain.

To boost our Flame of Ignaffar level i used Bloodsworn Vestments which can be farmed in either Blood grove above the Homestead or Tomb of Korvaak. Additionally, I used Loghorrean’s Corruption which drops from the Main Game boss Loghorrean’s Trove (Edge of Madness) [Map]

The Dreeg-Sect Legguards pants are excellent to boost HP regen, drops from the Guardian of Dreeg [Map] from the Secret Path Quest line.

Wendigo Eye drops from Wendigos near Barrowholm, optionally you can become friendly with them and during the Ravager Quest line farm the eye from the summoned

I have used 2x Living Ring to boost the Word of Pain nodes, they can be bought from Vinelton Vendor in Feral Thicket just like the belt Ugdenbog Waistguard.

When crafting a Conduit of Runic Whispers you may get a different variant of it, it has 11 different skill bonuses, you need the Chaos Word of Pain bonus, the crafting costs are very low and the odds are not that bad.

To enable Dual-wielding you can use the low level Blade Dance version of the relic which is sold in the Devil’s Crossing Faction.

The Word of Pain wont deal Chaos damage until you get the Conduit or the Mythical Visage of the Black Flame, while leveling from 1 to 94, it would be better to use Flames of ignaffar as the main source of damage, while dual-wielding two Segarius’ Tainted Blade which drops from Brother Segarius, Vengeance of Kymon [Map], and after leveling to 94 switch the weapons for two Vampirris.

Improvements

This is a budget build, but if you want to improve it you should use Mythical Legendary items which drops randomly from enemies around the world.

You may consider using incomplete set of The Voidsoul, just Helmet, Chest armor + Shoulders.

or

Black Scorch Covenant Helmet + Shoulders,

The Mythical Vestments of Severed Faith is quite excellent,

The Mythical Voidsteel Gauntlets are probably must have item, it greatly increases the damage.

Mythical Demonbone Legplates are decent choice.

Mythical Timewarped Walkers are quite excellent.

Mythical Combustion Band is absolutely amazing

If you are new to Grim Dawn
  • First, i must say if its your first Grim Dawn playthrough, then try to reveal and clear every location, without being overzealous, you will be fine if you miss a hidden chest or a breakable wall, you can also skip all Skeleton Key dungeons on Normal and Elite. Even if you have a couple of unfinished quests, it doesnt matter all that much. No quests or choices truly matter.

  • If its your first character and you plan to play more GD later, then pick up every Rare item and sell it, you will need lots of coins to purchase every Blueprint/Recipe from factions, and they are expensive, you will need like 2 000 000 coins to purchase every blueprint from every faction.

  • Try to store every component into the Shared Stash, especially on Hardcore, if your character dies carrying all those components inside his inventory or Personal stash you lose them, additionally if they all are stored in one shared stash, its easier to use them for crafting for all of your characters, the components will be used directly from your shared stash, so you dont have to drag any components manually into your inventory. Similar to how i do. Also, try turning your coins into Bars and also store them when you reach level 100.

  • Try to not loot hoard everything, the 99% of the items between lvls 1-84 are useless and too weak, maybe some low level sets are worth keeping like Explorer’s Garments, Herald’s Regalia, Royal Exuberance, The Praetorian , Adornments of Valiance . All other sets are ok’ish, but in my opinion too weak, only listed sets are decent. And even these sets are sort of obsolete after you get the Lokarr’s spoils set at level 100 on Ultimate from a secret quests, i usually dedicate only 2 stash windows for equipment and they are sufficient to level 90% of all builds.

During your Leveling 1 up to lvl 94, just focus on Resistances and Skill Modifiers, having lots of Resistances on items is what you want. Damage and self-sustain will be secured by Constellations and your Class Skills.

And this can be applied to ALL builds, not just this one, Resistances play a vital role in all Builds.

image
The upper resistances highlighted by Red are more common, and as a result slightly less valuable, and the lower resistance highlighted by Blue are less common, and more valuable.

Dont get me wrong, you want ALL of you resistances to be maxed 80%+ with some overcap +20% or so, except Physical Resistance which will play an important role when you are High level, but can be neglected during early leveling.

The Physical damage is the most valuable resistance in the late game, its rare and ALL enemies in the game deal Physical damage, and i mean ALL of them.

You see a Fire Mage Skeleton shooting a Fire Ball, the Fire Ball will deal 50% Fire damage and 50% Physical damage, this will be important later when you will switch the difficulty to Ultimate, around level 70+, so don’t worry too much about it, simply keep in mind that it’s important.

Components are extremely powerful and vital for any build, at level 20-25 you can craft most mid-level components
If you are level 20-35:
For Chest, Shoulders, Pants use 3x Silk Swatch
For Belt, Boots,Helmet use 3x Antivenom Salve
For gloves use 1x Unholy Inscription
For rings use 2x Soul Shard
For medal, amulet 2x Wardstone
For weapon(s) Purified Salt or Imbued Silver depending on what you need more.

If you are level 35-84:
Not really much changes, but you can start using:

For Chest and Helmet Runestone or Sanctified Bone
For Medal and Amulet Aether Soul or Black Tallow

Performance:

Steps of Torment:
Alkamos ~ 15 seconds kill

Port Valbury:
Overlord Van Aldritch ~ 35 seconds kill

Bastion of Chaos:
Shar’Zul ~ 18 seconds kill

Ancient Grove:
Gargabol ~ 20 second kill

Morgoneth Dungeon:
Morgoneth ~ 27 seconds kill

SR 26-31

Celestials:

Lokarr ~25 seconds kill
Mogdrogen ~5 min kill
Callagadra ~ 6 min 30 sec kill

Well, not the fastest gun, but if we take in count that I have not used Mythical Legendaries and used only Faction gear and Monster Infrequent its not too shabby, I bet with Mythical Combustion Band and something like Mythical Voidsteel Gauntlets I could reduce the celestial kill timers by a minute or so.

Or maybe with Mythical Korvaak’s Brand to be able to dual-wield and Oblivion instead of using Flames of Ignaffar i could also improve the kill timers.

Overall, solid build, I have enjoyed it quite a bit.

I like the approach.
Looks very decent for a faction geared build.
Extra points for doing all that on HC.

One thing that surprised me is how sturdy the build is.
Well done!

If you stick to it and don’t rip it would be cool to have a “final” (i.e. non-budget) setup in grimtools as one reference.

Nice to see an unconventional build like this! Chaos WoP really is surprisingly effective.

I have chaos deceiver who uses that conduit and medal, and that build has more skillpoints than I knew what to do with so I ended up putting more in WoP. Much to my surprise, it turned out to quickly kill not just non-bosses in the campaign, but even most trash mobs in the Shattered Realm. And that was without any additional items boosting it and at far less investment.

I will (temporarily) try out the weapons you use here to see how much damage it does then.

My build does use Oblivion. I find it plays smoother than FoI. And of course it doesn’t cost skillpoints. (which is why my character had so many leftover.)

However, I combine it with Doombolt and the Aeon devotion, so you can double-tap enemies with it. (An idea shamelessly stolen from one of the top 30 builds.)

Doombolt really solves the single target damage issue. I added items with %WD to doombolt so it can do ranged life-steal too. (Wrath of Tenebris and harbinger gloves

It’s a pretty weird combo (weapon is designed for attack speed, not casting) but it is a lot of fun because of how it combines the massive AoE clear of high-investment WoP with the focused single target damage of double-doom-bolt. My safest kiting build, though more than capable of going in and killing stuff faster with Oblivion providing extra damage and life-steal.

Oh, and also keep an eye out for the sash of the bloodlord for vit-chaos conversion, that makes Oblivion a lot more effective as otherwise half the damage is vit.

ty so much. :+1:

Every time I try to add Doom Bolt to a build it starts becoming a Doom Bolt build instead…
