A comprehensive analysis of the Black Flame set

Black Flame Covenant set
THE GOOD:

  1. The dagger, the focus and the shoulders are all exceptional items (perhaps BiS) for a chaos/vitality AAR build.
  2. The shoulders and the dagger are very well designed items that can be incorporated into a significant variety of other, non-AAR builds, without losing their potency.
  3. The 4-set ability covers most of the weaknesses associated with AAR in an intelligent manner.

THE BAD:

  1. The hood represents one of the worst legendary helms in the game, because:
    a) It offers no resistances;
    b) It offers absolutely no ability.

Now, let’s look at other legendary helms that have no resistances:
i) Abyssal Mask – offers a relatively potent proc;
ii) Crown of the Winter King – offers a shotgun cold spell with no cooldown;
iii) Beastcaller’s Cowl – not only is this also part of a set, but it also provides a massive dps buff for the pets.

Possible solution : the hood should be designed in such a way that both Chaos/Vitality AAR Warlocks AND pure vitality caster Conjurers could use it. Giving an “on attack” proc to the helm would make warlocks OP, of course, so we should not pursue that path. The optimal solution, IMO, is to have an “on hit” proc on the helm that deals vitality damage and heals the player character. That way, vitality casters – who generally win their battles through a war of attrition – can also make use of at least two pieces of the Black Flame Covenant set. More explicitly, I believe the following ability should be implemented:

Leeching Nova (Level 1):
150-200 vitality damage;
20% Weapon Damage
100% of Attack Damage converted to Health.
5 Meter Radius
5 Seconds Skill Recharge

20% Chance when hit by a melee attack (target self).

This ability will (i) help AAR bulds in the crucible due to the omnidirectional, radial nature of the proc; (ii) offer a minor energy boost through energy leech; and (iii) improve survivability of the character – which, it must be noted, is very low in the absence of godlike double rolled greens (HINT: Warlocks have the lowest DA and HP of any character in the game).

THE UGLY: .

While the 4-set piece ability is very strong and solves some of the main issues of AAR, the skill in itself is still enormously hard to use and mostly energy inefficient. A lot of players will probably still hate it despite the buffs it received in 1.0.0.6. and the existence of the Black Flame set. The single target damage output is indeed very high as it should be (i.e. 15 sec Mad Queen, 15 sec Fabius, 20 sec Moosilauke, etc.). Still, an AAR build requires enormous dedication, twitch reflexes and inhuman attention. That, at least, holds true if you want to finish Gladiator Crucible solo. Don’t get me wrong here: finishing Gladiator SHOULD ALWAYS require a top-notch build, insane items, dedication and…most importantly…skill. However, comparing an AAR build to CT, we can clearly see that the lack of WDC makes AAR chars extremely vulnerable when crowded. No ADCtH means your survivability is put into a roller coaster where you have to constantly create choke points, manage energy consumption and time the Empowered Rituals Circle + Mirror such that you do not get cornered and destroyed.

FINAL REMARKS:
Overall, I would give the new Black Flame set a solid 7/10

My suggestion regarding a relatively long cooldown vitality wave when hit with a melee attack proc put on the helm, I think, will make the character easier to manage and more fun to play without making him OP. In fact, I believe that increasing the DPS of the ray or reducing the energy consumption further will NOT make most players complain less about AAR. Right now, AAR is in a good spot damage wise. The legendary helm of the Black Flame Covenant set, however, could benefit from a proc as I suggested. Even with that proc, an AAR Warlock will not be even half as efficient as a Warborn Witchblade in the Crucible…

P.S: I invite everyone, of course, to criticize my analysis if they think my ideas are retarded or they believe I have left anything out.

I have come to the same conclusion, when tested in the crucible of the set, then I got up to 130 waves, and left (not dead, just pick up the award). The lack of any ability on the helmet looks mockery, even the “covenant of three” in the game through the polluted ray looks better. Of course, signet the full set is good, and it’s the only reason to wear a full set.

I’ve come up with two skills, which (as I think) could be a good fit here

I.
Granted skill: the Lake of Oblivion

Your deep understanding of the very essence of chaos allows you to summon the lake of chaotic fire.
A vision of pure chaos energy could break the weakest minds.

x mana cost
4m radius
5sec duration
x sec recharge
x chaos damage
x fire damage
terrify target for 5 Seconds
15% Chance for target to Fumble Attacks For 5 Seconds

OR

II.
Granted skill: Ritual sacrifice

Having enough sacrificial blood Solael grant you his protection in the most difficult times, allowing you to battle with unprecedented fury.

(100% chance to activate when health drops below 30%)
40% (maybe 50%) damage is absorbed
50% chance to +200% chaos damage
x sec duration
x sec skill recharge

I have been playing hardcore so generally speaking the biggest downside for the set (and caster gear in general) are the low armor values combined with usually not having %physical resistance – which is why for legs/chest I usually use leg plates of valor and high armor/hp chests instead of caster pants/chests. The shoulders and helm both lose 500 armor (meaning about 500 more health lost per attack taken from those slots), lack of physical resist, and have mediocre health values. That said They both give nice damage boosts and the overall set bonuses seem very nice. I am excited to try out the set but will need testing.

For a good helm comparison of chaos caster gear:

Eldritch Gaze

Covonant of the Three

https://gracefuldusk.appspot.com/items/9038-Covenant-of-the-Three

My softcore warlock Doombolter uses eldritch gaze (even though the skill bonuses from Covenant of the Three are more applicable to my build) largely because armor increases survivability so much. Likewise, both these helms seem to be much better than the Black Flame helm. And even faction head gear like the homestead Elite Solar Defender or Elite Legion Headguard are probably better than the Black Flame helm. This means that the set bonus would have to make up any differences in survivability.

The Visage of the Black Flame has a massive +200% style when you wear it. :slight_smile:

If you saw me play a Black Flame Warlock you would know that:

  1. The 4-set ability does indeed increase your survivability, allowing me to finish Gladiator Solo with this squishy combo.
  2. It allows you to facetank guys such as Fabius. Take this for reference: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DkRuMiQpUN4

My point was that the helm has 0 useful abilities and is bad even compared to other legendary helms that have 0 resistances and/or are part of a set. Since I made a BF Warlock completely self found I used a Covenant of the Three 90% of the time I spent in Ultimate.

and…+400% to SWAG. Too bad Fabius and the Iron Maiden don’t give a f**k about swag.

It seems viable for damage mitigation, your HP is still low (15k+ is ideal for hardcore I think), it will be interesting how our builds will differ in late game especially since I will be using manticore constellation instead of black star of deceit; though atm I am still farming hardcore crucible with my witchblade for the black flame set so not sure when I’ll be able to complete my warlock my build. I did notice you use the pants Wraithborne Legwraps (?) and I was actually thinking about testing those over Legplates for Valor eventually and was wondering if you compared the 2 yourself?

But yea overall the Black Flame Helm is kind of underwhelming and maybe a vitality proc of some sort might be nice.

It is almost impossible to reach 15k HP with an AAR Warlock without sacrificing some extremely vital aspect of the build or farming for one week some specific Gollus ring that might not even drop.

The Legplates of Valor were BiS due to +%DA and HP and it is certainly ok to get them if you fear for your life. In reality, ofc, those 15s Fabius/ Mad Queen videos are not representative of how I play or you should be playing a Black Flame AAR build. Those are just showcase clips. If I tried that 100 times I would certainly die at least once. In reality, the time it takes you to find a nemesis is much longer than the time you need to dispose of it.

As such, you don’t need more than 11-12k HP with a Warlock due to % damage absorbtion and Focused Gaze. When I am not making retarded “facetank” videos I play with Focused Gaze vs. Fabius/IM and I don’t have any problem surviving any time (including vs. energy burn “eldritch” weapons). Let’s be honest here: 20-25 seconds with kiting vs. 15 second “facetank” means very little and the 4-set Black Flame ability + FG would allow you to survive vs these nemeses “mage killers” even with 9k HP (empirically tested in more than 50 cases).
