I’m really interested in Grim Dawn story. It’s simple but worth to follow. Grim Dawn is a huge world with many secrets and you have many options to choose while playing. It is similar to the Witcher and i love it. I know ARPG usually don’t focus too much to story but a good story should have a good ending. Example: i can choose way to guide to many different endings. Each time i play, i usually remember about Dark Soul because these two worlds are quite similar. Darkly and many secrets.
After many chapter, we destroyed Cronley’s Gang but Aetherials, Chthon still exists. I wish devs can make a complete story for Grim Dawn:D
Dark Souls doesn’t have a definitive end either; in fact the whole point of its story is that things keep repeating (unless you take the ‘good’ ending in the third game).
Grim Dawn isn’t about a ending, but humanity struggling to survive. And i am very please that Crate did it this way.
It’s a clever marketing ploy.
We get the ending, where our hero leads the survivors through riftgate to a new world where to start from zero.
Then we get the citybuilder, which generates the world based on GD save.
Now having a city builder in the GD that could use the outcome of your questing in GD, that would be pretty neat.
I like this plot for a sequel; the world is so fucked up as a battleground between gods, aetherials, eldritch and chtonians that the people from Devil’s Crossing+Homestead+Black Legion+Malmouth survivors make an exodus to a new world through a rift. The one making the rift is ‘our hero’ from GD1, who of course dies in the process of keeping this massive rift open for everyone to escape (hmmm cheesy plot <3).
And then ofc they end up in an even more fucked up place; full of new lvls to grind and gear to gain, with new monsters, classes etc. Yes please. After FG go build a kickstarter and take a few years to build something worthy of following up GD. I’d throw my money at that.
I kinda like this idea of going from GD1 into a city builder, but I think Medierra wants separate franchises rather than have them all linked together. Unless it’s built as some sort of option with GD1 or you can play the city builder completely separately without needing to own GD1.
And Zantai’s said several times they’re not tying up the story so no “ending” as such.
as long as Ulgrim lives, there will be no ending !
I’m actually against them doing another Kickstarter. The first one was successful, then became even more successful during Steam EA, then, yet again, more success after full release. Then AoM was clearly successful enough that they hopped right in to doing FG. My guess is that too shall be successful.
They have realized their dream and have decidedly waaaay more money than they have ever had in their lives. They can now make games without Kickstarter as long as their projects continue to be profitable from here on out.
If I was them I would instead simply crowdfund directly from their own websites now. They have a presence and their reputation remains favorable with their community. As it stands now I can see most of their fan-base gladly backing any projects they come up with. And even then they hardly need it at this juncture to continue on. They are in a good place at this time.
That might be possible if they feel they need it. Might have to run something like that through Humble though since unless Paypal have changed their policy, Crate can’t use them.

Whether Patreon would be possible I don’t know.
And as Medierra said the donations and Kickstarter were very small parts of the funding of the game so whether it’d really be worth setting up another crowdfunding project is doubtful. Yes, their reputation is higher now, but unless it’s for an ARPG people might not be willing to risk their money if the project is for another genre like a city builder for example.
Well, like I said, they really don’t need it anyway. For my part tho, I have no problem backing their city builder. It depends on the person really. You can be a diablo-like fan and like other genres ya know?
I know. City builders were my first gaming experiences and I still love to play them.
Guess any future crowdfunding really comes down to how big a leap of faith you’re prepared to take. When I bought into GD all I knew about it was that it was being made by some of the devs who’d worked on my favourite game and it was using that game’s engine. My thought process was - well, I like what they’ve done so far so hopefully I’ll like what they’re making now. Think I’ll buy it.
