I had a “Runed Stone of Mogdrogen” quest item required for the “Rhowari Legacy” quest in my bag in Elite, but skipped the quest as the rewards are not really worth the effort in Elite. Now in Ultimate, these shrine rewards are useful. I forgot I had a RSOM already and dived into the portal in the Blood Grove and came to the RSOM, but it would not let me pick it up (I now realized I already have one). I then jumped out of the dungeon via the exit portal and moved my existing RSOM in my bag to my stash.
I then re entered the dungeon and located the RSOM and I could now collect it.
Moving this new RSOM to my stash gave even another surprise - THEY ACTUALLY STACK !
What this actually means is that while you are in veteran, you can actually collect 3 RSOM and 3 “Spirit of Mogdrogen” and then in Elite and Ultimate you can complete that quest on the way instead of having to backtrack after you eventually get the SOM in the dungeon beyond Fort Icon.
I am not sure if this works for other quest items, but it seem that transferring the quest item to your stash REMOVES it and unticks from your quest log.
I particularly like this one as I find it a pain to always have to backtrack from Fort Icon to complete it, now I can do it on the way to Fort Icon if I store both the quest items in my stash.
Was not aware that the Strange Key did this as well. That could also be useful to collect 3 of in Veteran to be instantly usable in Elite and Ultimate.
I am going to keep my eye open now when I collect quest items and see if others have the same properties.
Yes, same trick. If you have more than one drop in a location you can pick one up, rift back to place it in the stash and then rift back to pick up the other one.
As @medea_fleecestealer said, yup, there are a number of quests you can do with this, like the Black Legion Medals. When I was doing my 36 full leveling characters, when I was in Normal doing as many subtests as I could to push my reputation, I would often end up with 6 or 7 of the medals because I would also be doing the quest to save the farmers and retrieve the ashes in the same area. Then after turning them in (takes 5 medals) any left overs I’d save for Elite in case I needed to do extra quests for rep. Same goes for Slith Necklaces and the Rover quest in Act 1.
I generally think of exploits in games/software as utilising a feature implemented by the developer (in this case depositing/stacking items) in a way they did not anticipate (as opposed to a bug which is completely unintended behaviour).
