Accidentally deleted my save game

TLDR: Does anyone have a save game in between beginning of act 4 and entering the Necropolis?

I’m not sure if this is the correct place to post this, but I’m looking for a save game that fits the above description. I used Grim Dawn Defiler to change my masteries a long time ago, which created a new character and kept the old one. Today I decided to delete the old one using the ingame menu since I was tired of looking at two characters with the same name. When I loaded up my normal savegame I got the intro cinematic and was lvl 1 again. On the main menu it now lists my old character and a new lvl 1 character, with my real character being gone.
I really hope someone can help me, as I’ll probably never pick up the game again if I have to start all over like this again.

Thanks

a) Always back up your characters before changing anything.

b) What good would having someone else’s character do since you haven’t even told us what class you were playing?

c) You can use GDDefiler or GDStash to edit your new character back into the deleted one iirc.

d) Replaying the game with a new toon is a major part of the fun.

I do not have such a save, but maybe if it’s recent you could recover your saves using Recuva? It’s from the same guys making Ccleaner and I have used it in the past to “undelete” photos…

Otherwise you could use GDefiler again to create a character that has most of the riftgates unlocked.

While you do have a point, it’ll really be better to just comply with his request. GDStash and GDDefiler is a slippery road which might easily break the desire to play just as much as char wipe.

Sadly I only have lvl 90 Tactician who’s on Ultimate and lvl 39 Necromancer who’s at Homestead after clearing Valbury. Both are hardcore though. :undecided:

A: I did back up my original character, but didn’t think to do it before deleting the old one. How should I know it would somehow reset the progress of my new character?

B: I can use GDDefiler to “refund” all the points and create my character again.

C: Can I use it to put myself in the same part of the story? (AKA act 4)

D: I love replaying games and I was looking forward to completing the game on the higher difficulties and start getting legendaries, but it’s really disheartening to lose all the progress on my first character before I’ve even completed the story.

I actually tried to use that exact program, but it couldn’t find my savefile

When did you last back up your files and how? If using local saves then that’s done through My Documents\My Games\Grim Dawn\save and that would have saved all your characters, not just one.

Since you have the old character can that one not be edited into the new one via GDDefiler?

I assume the OP wants the same class, but hasn’t told us what that is so how can anyone provide him with what he’s asking for? Unfortuantely none of my characters are in that part of the game, they’ve either not reached it yet or have moved on into the expansion.

I backed it up during the start of the game in order to change my masteries using GDDefiler.
As for the class, it doesn’t matter since I can just use GDDefiler to change it to what I want.

Then why can’t you change your other character? You can open the riftgates for Act 2 using the Defiler and then carry on from where your other character stopped.

I just tried this, but the story/quests doesn’t update. I’ll just be running around act 4 without any purpose.

Not sure how defiler works but you could try this:

If you still have access to the character folder, you can try soft deleting every file in the character folder that has a copy that has .bac behind it (so you delete the one that DOES NOT have .bac behind it). Then you rename the file that is left over with .bac behind it by simply backspacing the .bac part of the file name and save.

Do this with every file ONLY in the character folder that has a .bac version, ignore the rest. When you finish renaming the .bac off the backup files so that they look like the ones you soft deleted, restart the game and try playing your toon again.

P.S. You should manually copy your Grim Dawn folder someplace safe before attempting this. If you don’t have that character folder anymore check the recycle bin for it. (will be called _charactername and should have a date modified of the time you deleted it)

Hope it helps.

There’s currently no way (that I’ve seen) to edit quests, so it doesn’t matter how many rift gates you enable in Defiler/GDStash, if you don’t progress the story, you’re just going to run around killing enemies with no way to actually progress the story.

TC, I have a ton of old characters I made during the beta phases of the game (I don’t like deleting old characters, so what, wanna fight?). I know two or three of them were still in Homestead waiting for Crate to finish Act 4, so it wouldn’t take very long for me to rush one of them through to the Necropolis and upload the file to dropbox or mega.

If you like, I can try to remake your character before uploading the save or just use one of the tools to wipe the skills/attributes, adjust the level and hand him off to you as a blank character. Let me know and I’ll see what I can do. If you want your entire character back the way he/she was, you’ll have to let me know all the details: gear, skills, masteries, faction standing/siding, sex, etc.

Thanks for the offer, but I think I’ll give my older backup a try again. Hopefully I’ll be able to complete the game without becomming bored of the section I already completed
