Advice about steps of torment?

Hey guys,

So I am level 48 on a primal strike ranged conjurer and I have to go into the sealed part of the steps of torment to get an item for a quest. I have been in there before on one other character and got completely destroyed in that first “kill” room you enter, the chamber of souls I think it is called?

So I tried it today with my conjurer and in the same room I got annihilated. Now my move speed is not very good but that isn’t really the problem in that room. It is that you get like 6-8 heroes and there is very little room to manoeuvre or to kite the enemies which is really important for ranged characters. I tried going in with a low level briarthorn which is not part of my build just to see if he could grab some aggro and he completely failed at that.

So wondering if others have had success with the same sort of build I am using or if there is any advice you might be able to give me to make getting this item easier? I am in veteran at the moment and I have to say I hate these areas that you can’t drop a rift in. They seem a little hardcore and I really am not interested in hardcore. The only reason I want to do this area is to get the item and get the loot. I doubt very much that I will be able to beat whatever big boss is at the end as even the priest on level 3 just before the door can kill me extraordinarily easily.

I face-tanked that room so my advice might not be of much help: try to fight around a pillar.

The pillar will block all range attack and makes bosses unable to cast spells on you. Just by running around the pillar you can dodge a lot of damage.

If you have something that can slow enemies, that helps a lot too. Other CC won’t work but slow does.

Some things to note for SoT.

As ever, maxed resistances are your friend, especially the one for your damage type as there are reflective skeleton knights littered throughout the place.

If you have the points to spare to shuffle it, wendigo totem and blood of dreeg will give you considerable life regen. I don’t know if you have access to the haunted steel blueprint at this point but its life leech can also help.

you don’t have to go in to the Death Room, its optional. So if your build is struggling with it now just skip it.
Then you can try the deathroom again later on higher difficulty when you are better geared.

Just don’t stay near that locked chest in center of room, it’s a very dangerous place, better idea stay near the column. Also (as you are shaman) vendigo totem is your best friend.

Check items with stats like +X% damage to undead and stats like X% less damage to undead.
For instance: Sanctified Bone or Potent Arkovian Bonemeal or Haunt relic.

Even with as many characters as I have in this game and the amount of time I’ve put in, I still haven’t found a haunt blueprint unfortunately.

I appreciate the advice but isn’t avoiding the kill rooms against the idea? I mean you would miss so much loot if you did that. Though you might be suggesting I skip them to get to the enemy with the item I need? I’d rather not skip rooms. I know I will die a lot but the idea of missing all that loot doesn’t seem right to me

Also if I can’t survive the kill rooms there is no way I am going to survive whatever big nasties are at the end of the dungeon, right? I mean I couldn’t even get to the door without dying to Zarathusellan who killed me in seconds somehow. I wasn’t even standing in his conflagration. I also hate the narrow bridges in this game and how hard it is to manoeuvre on them and past enemies on them.

If you are that squishy there isnt going to be much that can be done besides raising your hp imo.

A few suggestions that might help are maxing mogdrogens skill line (lowering dps slightly and not getting one or two shot is the main idea until you get great gear). Also the faction vendors sell some pretty nice hp/resist gear (you could do bounties until 50 for the faction that you want to buy the lvl 50 items from).

Or just keep banging your head against it until you break thru but i would do either of the above to ease the pain.

a bit off topic, but you can almost guaraantee a relic blueprint from treasure troves(the chests that spawn in random locations in some zones)
you can fin more information here:http://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=660379177

So I went into the steps last night on my arcanist with my friend who is playing a soldier tank at the moment. We did fine in the kill room but I was hesitant about fighting alkamos(?) and my friend grabbed his aggro while we were still on the bridge. He dropped his ring of death blocking my way forward and then moved into such a position I couldn’t pass him on the bridge. He kept dropping those rings of death and I couldn’t get past and he teleported on top of me and killed me. Three times in there and I have died three times. I got the achievement for killing the executioner because my friend did it but that felt really cheap. Also realised you need blood of Chthon to make keys. I’ve hit up about 10 troves on this character in multiplayer and I haven’t had one blueprint drop, mostly it has been more common crafting materials and a green and some yellows. I’m not giving up though, determined to beat this ridiculous hardcore dungeon. Where is the best place to get blood of Chthon? I feel like I am going to need a few.

The blacksmith located in the necropolis is your best friend if you have ancient hearts/tainted brain matter to craft with.

The first thing is you can kill salazar at that “strange key” mini dungeon in act1. Be sure to have vitality / chaos res high or boost it for that farming. It may drop from Salazar with a fairly high chance and with a lot less chance from every Chthonic mob (champs more likely), too.

B) From treasure troves for which you need dynamite

C) Break down items with dynamite at the npc in act1 it may provide you. I mostly use it on super common legendaries everybody gets in masses or even blue drops.

You can buy dynamite at act3/4 from the black legion guy. The components you need for that are pretty common. Just make sure to pick all of them up whenever you see one  The exchange ration is 1/1/1 component (one of it is that aether chrystal thing, pretty easy to farm) : 3 dynamite.

D) All other high end crafting material maybe exchanged for any else at the blacksmith in last act. There is no direct portal to him. So if you own 1 brain you may exchange it for blood at this guy.
