I’m playing a “Warder” which just hit level 42. I’m shredding through everything really (and been exping on red+purple mobs without much trouble when I was around 30), but actually am using just TWO and a half skills on my action bar, Savagery for melee attacks and Wind Devil for ranged, and then the Briarthorn pet. Well or if you call melee attacking or reconjuring a dead pet not an “active skill”, then I even only really “use” Wind Devil, ONE skill, lol.
Now the thing is, I have spent all my skill points to maximize these skills and their subsequent boost skills, so it’s not like I held back skill points or anything. If we’re maxing out a skill, then by level 42 it seems you’ll need all your skill points to end up with not more than two maximised, active skills.
Usually in a game like this I’d have expected to have my action bar(s) packed with skills I’d be juggling, but this seems rather trivial so far, so…am I really doing this right? o_O
Levelling skills early obviously makes those skills relatively OP. At the same time, this means that you now will have to diversify as the skill is ‘complete’.
Whether you diversify early or late is somewhat up to you and your preference. Focusing on a few skills early on makes those strong though, imo you should definitely not spread too wide because of that.
At early and mid levels you are low on skill points so it can be better to focus on only 2-3 skills. However as you progress to ultimate, and you want to squeeze all the performance you can out of your hero, then more skills can be beneficial.
You might consider the following utility skills:
-Blitz is great mobility skill and it also reduces enemy defensive ability allowing you to hit harder
-Wendigo totem pumps up your health in the time of need
-War Cry reduces enemy damage
You can’t really do anything wrong when it comes to skills and devotions, as you can respec later, or at any time…
Just think carefully about how far you want to take each class tree, and what stat points you’re going to spend.
I only have 2 characters so far (Warder, Sorcerer) and the game seems pretty Physique heavy, in terms of stat points (you really need to stack health + defensive ability for later game)
Long-term you’ll probably want to choose between Savagery and Wind Devil, but I’m not sure about Wind Devil, someone else will probably be able to advise you, or perhaps search up on the forums (my Savagery Warder is purely meele 2H physical). This might affect your stat point distribution and class tree progression, so it might be worth planning ahead on that.
In the end it really only matters that your setup works. Some of my builds only spam 1 or 2 skills while some have as many as 3 or 4 active mastery skills, but they play off each other so it works out.
Synergy is what’s important - the skills you choose must enhance each other in some way. You’re going to need a much better reason than “just for extra DPS” when choosing skills.
Note that masteries are not your only source of skills, there’s also components, gear and devotions.
Yeah, I just meant the individual skills themselves, which is why I followed up with “Just think carefully about how far you want to take each class tree” - I meant the mastery bar. I grant you it was not very clear >_<
You are not doing it wrong at all. I personally love the “lazy builds” most. You might need to pick up wendigo totem later on, cause it is super good even with 1 skill point.
For example my warder:
