Another episode of "Why did I die?"

I was playing on hardcore veteran, doing fine, feeling pretty safe, reached Ekket’Zul and facetanked him calmly. Then he died and as I was looking at the items he dropped, I noticed a “you are dead” window. “What?” - I thought. Checked the health bar and yes, it was indeed empty. That’s how surprised I was. Not even raging, just speechless. My health never dropped to 50 % during the fight, but somehow vanished when it was over.

I felt like I encountered a bug, but thought it was some “on death” effect. Sure, Ekket’Zul has one, but I don’t see why it killed my character. What did I forget about?

Can somebody explain it to me? I don’t want to buff/nerf anything, only to understand what happened.

His volcano mines?

But yeah, this be why I don’t play HC cause there’s too many instances of game bullshit even now. Especially in SR.

alternatively you were so low or sundered right prior to death his death attack done you in?

personally i feel like it’s always a surprise volcano towards the end that catches me most hp/offguard wise,
90% of the time i get him low HP and just start tunnelvision on the kill and forget to pay attention to the stuff i just paid attention to

what about the radial chaos/phys spikes, can those shotgun on return when you are in the spot where ekket died? those have more phys damage than the volcano, more projectiles and %-health reduction on top.

Never ever stay in one place when fighting Ekket, Shar’Zhul, and Gargabol. Even after they already died, because the environment hides well the volcano and the likes

nova
and it doesn’t have more projectiles
nova = 1x burst, and unless you’re clipped in the spawn centre you can’t get hit by all
volcano = 8 projectiles; per volley,
and if they shoot like the other similar skills that’s 6-8 projectiles every 0.6 or 0.8secs for however many seconds it lasts, which quickly adds up to dozen of projectiles eaten
that doesn’t mean the nova can’t kill your or shotgun you(easy to eat “half” of it), just that you’re underestimating the volcano frags

These volcanos are a true menace if you are not prepared. Same with Gargabol and Dravis most notably (at least for me)

that’s what i said, ekket dies, char goes to the spawn centre.

look at grimtools, the volcano has 3-5 projectiles (~lvl 70). and yes, per volley but he died in one volley.

I know I was standing in volcanoes during the fight. I could safely withstand that. Perhaps my buffs were all off at that specific moment or a crit happened. I don’t feel like re-trying any time soon.

pretty sure that’s not how it works, not 100% sure,
but pretty sure it’s just the initial cast that can shotgun you like that and it doesn’t actually go full centre return
(atleast dmg doesnt’ seem to spike either when manually trying this)

you can’t know that, it shoots so fast it’s easy to eat multiple in the blink of an eye

and it’s still easily like 6-10 frags vs 4 projectiles at most

Ekket can’t dispell you btw, so would have had to be temp buffs/circuit breakers,
or alternatively you ate his wingflap/sunder right before he died, amplifying whatever leftover attack that ended you

*aside from sunder i can’t explain it, because your char really doesn’t seem to take much of anything dmg, even without using overguard
and according to tooltip he can’t even crit you

edit. even with sunder i can’t explain it Res  - your char seems to take minimal to 0 dmg, even when i take off turtle shell devo
only times dmg occur is while sundered and item procs are on cd, but even then it doesn’t go below 50% hp
regardless of getting shotgun by the nova and volcano at the same time…

Thanks for testing. There were some bug reports about “on death” nukes, but I can neither find them now nor remember if they were solved. Maybe that’s what got me.

i even tried to mod out the relic/medal safety proc, not using (soldier)Overguard, no turtle shell, and your char is still taking minimal dmg while eating literally everything and sunder
https://imgur.com/ugTDFpC - it’s not even triggering resilience let alone Menhir’s will

how it died, at this point, is utterly astounding to me :joy:

sneaky off-screen grava balls because @Res played with warrants. :stuck_out_tongue:

ye that was actually my thought/something similar i had in mind, since i had an arcane spawn behind me couple times before entering arena
but i imagine Res doesn’t leave stuff behind like me just rushing to try boss

You bet. All cleared up to Ekket.

this is probably like my best try https://imgur.com/a/UnipxhX and hp bar just doesn’t move
actually takes more dmg standing still/actually eating a projectile or two on the return than trying to catch more/all going to centre, it’s like they just don’t deal dmg in there

turns out it’s even complicated on its own just finding a spot where most of them don’t break up and don’t even return to us

speculating the dmg is easy to make the numbers add up for me
but in practice it’s just… crazy hard to pull off, to get even close

gotta catch 'em all. that’s some dedication, dude, nice. new theory then: schroedinger’s damage, only taken when not observed. :stuck_out_tongue:

What tends to get me is that some hazard is no big deal while the boss is alive and I am leeching health, but as soon as they’re dead I have to book it or die.

With GDStash I checked this character’s greatest damage taken: 3396. Out of his ~9700 health. Frankly, I expected to see a bigger number. This explains nothing, I’m just sharing. I wish I could see this info in game without external tools.

No, I’m not reviving him.

Hmm, assuming ekket is lvl 77, according to grim tools his shard turret would deal 5008 burn over 8 second, with ±350% burn damage, its about 2.8k burn per second before resistance, with 80% fire resist It’s about 560 burn/s

Also with him dying, the char also lose the source of life steal
