It does not take one long to realize that the given storage and shared storage won’t even last to lvl 100 if you just keep every blue item, even if you throw away duplicates…
I’d like to hear any tips and tricks on:
how to decide what to keep and what not?
will I eventually need storage alts?
how “mandatory” is a 3rd party program to keep track of my items?
Even with Item Assistant, I wouldn’t recommend just keeping everything. Managing that much stuff becomes a huge, unnecessary chore down the line.
I personally do not keep one of every Blue. I view the majority of them as leveling items. They are not usually the best-in-slot items and they drop plentifully. I only keep Blue sets in case I feel like leveling with a set sometime.
I also keep all max-level Legendaries and any Monster Infrequents that happen to drop with very good affixes.
I try to be picky with what I keep, otherwise even with an app the storage can get out of hand easily.
I am also quite sparing in the blues I pick up and usually filter out everything except legendaries and MIs. I would say, though, that you absolutely could pick up blues and throw them into IA. If you do this, you are guaranteed to not ignore the small number of them that are good, and you can just exclude them from searches the rest of the time.
I use IA as a kind of after-the-fact loot filter. The filter in the game is rather limited, but in IA you can filter for, eg, Gollus Rings with %fire damage and OA and immediately see if you have such a thing. As for legendaries, you will accumulate a vast number of duplicates, but you can have periodic detonation sessions in which you blow up all but the best example of an item.
In general, I feel that it’s best not to waste time while farming by stopping to debate whether an item is worth picking up and I find IA great for that.
I will add that I used to wish that Crate would add a searchable infinite stash to the game. More recently, I have come to think that it is one of the benefits of playing an offline game that one can have helper tools like this, and that there are better uses of Crate’s time (such as finishing Fangs of Asterkarn).
This. I used to figure out what I wanted to keep, but now I just dump ‘everything’ (double rare and better) in IA. Then I filter when I want to equip or plan a character.
I did accumulate quite a bit of stuff in the meantime, which is also not ideal. Especially the MI’s can clog up the view a bit. But I haven’t figured out a better strategy yet.
IA is almost mandatory if you plan to farm some gear or you want to play more characters and do you want avoid farm stuff a second time.
Regarding what to keep, I tend to play ssf until lvl 94, so I only keep:
Legendary items lvl 82+
All MI with class bonus (belt and amulet with +1 to all class skills). This items are so useful and used often on end game builds.
Epic rings and amulet lvl 82+, because blues sometimes have rare bonuses.
All “popular” and “general purpose” MI, like Gollus Ring lvl 94+
It’s not a bad idea to keep all the epic stuff btw because with the introduction of upgrading blues coming with Fangs they could be more useful than expected
