Are Level Caps (skill caps) necessary?

Night blade builds usually need to max out anyway due to WPS and BS? Unless just using RR and buffs. So unless you spent all that time just playing other builds, it doesn’t make sense that you’ve never maxxed out Night blade mastery. Its the same as any other mastery that you need to put points in to reach max level, and max effectiveness.

Permanent Wind devils come to mind…

And you’d have to play the game 10 times to reach level 100, except you can’t do any of the quests twice, so… maybe more like 15 times? No thanks.

Game just needs a @Res Mode :rofl::rofl:

Hear me out. I played a mod reducing XP gain to 10 % and game worked quite well that way. Low level items gained meaning, especially sets. Clearing whole locations brought actual benefit. Death penalty could hurt. Decisions on level ups mattered more, because next level was more than 5 minutes away.

With normal XP gain I started Ultimate on level 95 after full Vet+Elite clear. If my numbers are correct, reducing gain to 10 % would make me start Ulti on level 49. So much to still look forward to on Ultimate! Heck, I would barely find any legendaries before Ultimate and that sounds great!

Do we have to reach max level before campaign ends?

Not sure it works with current patch. ( Don’t see why not.) But this has what you’re asking for. Be careful. Raw power is addictive. Follow the guide to a T

Eh… I don’t know. I don’t like playing the campaign three times with the same dude. And while xp is less, you’d still have most of the devotion points already at the end of veteran. This means nearly all shrines in elite and definitely all in ultimate are useless.

I personally prefer playing just Ultimate from level 1, with mandates, but (mostly) without xp potions. Then after completing the campaign you’ll be somewhere in the 90s.

So no, but should we have to play through all difficulties all the time?

I really don’t find veteran very enjoyable. It’s ok at the start, but very quickly becomes boring to me. Sometimes I start in Elite, because early on bosses in Ultimate can be a bit too spongy imho. But then I usually transfer after Act 1.

Edit:
Just to be clear you were proposing 10% of current gain, not 10% less aka 90%, right?

Just as with my suggestion, yours is based solely on your play-style and capabilities within the game. Not everyone shares your skill.
I would even be willing to rephrase my suggestion to ask that they allow leveling up beyond level 100, but no skill or attribute points beyond the current limit are awarded. At least then you feel that you have achieved something more than just collecting unique items as you continue.
I agree that at level 100, my build is pretty powerful, but 20 or 30 more skill would be great. You are always going to be limited by your class selection anyway.

I may just give this a try…

I would point out that 217 is not the max number of skill points you can have. Some are part of quest rewards; the total number you can get is 248.

I deleted my own bomber last year when I switched over to playing only hardcore, but there’s plenty of examples around:

lightning barrelsmith sorc from top 20 thread: Sorcerer, Level 100 (GD 1.2.1.3) - Grim Dawn Build Calculator
rektoss’s beginner fire grenado/BWC sorc: Sorcerer, Level 100 (GD 1.1.9.8) - Grim Dawn Build Calculator
random fire shieldbreaker I found: Shieldbreaker, Level 100 (GD 1.2.1.3) - Grim Dawn Build Calculator

Similar setups are good on Purifier, Elementalist, Pyromancer, there’s a purple crossbow to make a pierce Saboteur… pretty much always comes down to maxing two damage skills and then taking all the various support skills you want.

Yeah, leveling is fun, but not when you have to waste so much time doing it. Its not going to make leveling mean any more than it already does unless you place more value in spending an additional 500+ more hours to reach lvl 100. That’s not my idea of “fun” given the game encourages experimentation/testing class/skill combo’s. Kind of hard to do that if you have to invest too much time on leveling to 100 in order to reach a build’s possible full potential.

Thing is, I’m fine with NOT reaching max level with a character. Like I never did in Diablo 2. I achieved what I wanted and moved on.

Diablo 2, where there is no endgame, very different from Grim Dawn where there are more activities after finishing the campaign.

Whilst I recognise removing or raising the cap would fundamentally alter the game design and also take a tremendous amount of work to balance, it would be nice to have a mod that gives, say, 50 extra skill points, so I can try out builds with fully completed skills, and maybe it could make enemies much more dangerous (more mutators or more abilities for them and more hp/res/dmg).

mods granting more skill points already exists
it’s also one of the easiest modifications to make, heck you can even use a char editor to get it no mod needed
as for making enemies harder, unsure, but should be doable i messing with the global scaling modifiers i suppose
