Bargoll’s Core this only drops from Bargoll which spawns once per session.
Assume you need to spend Manticore Eye each time you reset game and want to kill this.

And what altar buff would you use?
And why would you even use that buff when the drop chance is big anyway
The wording on the Altar is a bit confusing. I believe “Additional chance of X items” means “Additional chance for modifiers of type X” on items.
So for Bargoll you’d be using Manticore Eye for more pet related modifiers, or maybe you spend Ugdenbloom on the altar because you want Vitality modifiers on the item. Possibilities are endless in a game with so many buffs, so many builds, and different altar buffs.
MI’s already have affix affinity
Cost vs. reward is a thing in ARPGs
Like if I were to use a Horned Scarab of bloodlines, a very rare scarab for map juicing in Path of Exile, I better make that worth it because it only lasts one map.
So you’re saying the new system that allows you to target loot for your build and tweak the difficulty of the game, allowing you to choose what content to engage with and the difficulty of enemies… should only be available to players who play long sessions. And players who enjoy smaller sessions or need to reset the session to target the loot they need should not be permitted to engage with it?
My bad for thinking this new system they hyped up a lot was supposed to be usable to more than just those who play long sessions.
Okay here is a better example, take Gollus Ring for example. Only drops from one monster. As far as damage type goes it has no affix affinity as far I’m aware.
Lets say you want to farm a Gollus Ring with pet modifiers. You need to spend a Manticore Eye each time you reset the game to kill that one enemy.
Does that sound good to you?
Yes, the cost is that it makes the enemies much harder to deal with. No one is asking for these buffs to be free and also have no downside.
I hope they make Horned Scarab of Bloodlines permanent in Path of Exile too, they are very very rare. And if you play trade they cost like 4 divs or something
MI’s already have affix affinity
That is all the more reason for changing the system. One of the promises of the altar was so that we can override the affinities. For example if I am playing vit storm totem, using the alter I can farm vit affixes for storm totem MIs that would otherwise have lightning affinity.
It needs to be fine-tuned for sure, but having the buffs permenent just to favor shorter one-boss runs… idk… then the ones who plays longer sessions will complain instead? Why even have material cost in the first place if it is gonna be permanent?
There is also the re-roll affix mechanic, which ignores affix bias. I have not tried that much myself.
How does altar buffs being permanent hurt the people who do (can do) longer sessions?
Because they paid the same cost? If it was to “last forever” perhaps the cost should be higher like 1 manticore eye = 1 session, 5 manticore eyes = stays permanent or until you switch"
btw funny that this was mention, my latest drop

Why does this matter in a single player game with no trade?
Because it is still an ARPG with elements of grind etc in it.
If you think its too high cost to spend a manticore eye for one boss kill, GD stash 10000 of them? IT is a single player game with no trade so who cares?
There is also the re-roll affix mechanic, which ignores affix bias.
Well, no bias is not the same as controllable bias. Important thing is getting affinities build uses.
Why even have material cost in the first place if it is gonna be permanent?
Because we can change it later on. Altar offers bonuses for many things like totem farming. Affix bias is ineffective towards legendary farming for example.

I don’t think session length has much to do with the topic considering even those playing long sessions have to quit to main menu while farming MIs. And farming MIs is the most common farming activity in this game.
It needs to be fine-tuned for sure
It does not have to be permanent. Maybe until death? Or maybe permanent but requires 10 times materials?
It matters because big expansion features should only be available to certain parts of the playerbase who play the “right way”. Others shouldn’t be permitted to interact with it if they don’t play the “right way”.
Or at least that’s what I’m getting from how they are reacting to this.
Never meant to mean that it was the same thing, but that is also a possibility to get MI’s with off-bias affixes that could be “worth it”.
Yeah I was on to something like that in my previous reply.
You have a survey of this? I thought it was SR
It is available? Just pay the material and interact with it. Developers made this feature for a reason I think, it is not arbitrary and this has been evaluated by playtesters. We already have this feature like SR shrine buffs, skeleton key dungeons etc
Is the same for me in PoE SSF leauge and scarabs, I have to make them count. SSF in PoE is a self imposed grind challenge and I am aware of that. Spending a pretty rare mat in the ascension altar just to farm one boss is also a self imposed challenge. Either the devs and the playtesters did not have time to evaulate the current implenentation of it, or this is the way they intended it to be.
I think the idea of having it permenent but at a higher initial cost is a great idea
You have a survey of this? I thought it was SR
I was talking about target farming strictly considering not quitting to the main menu is the best way to farm SR because otherwise you get duplicates. And SR is endgame whereas MI farming can be done at any point.
Out of curiosity, how do you feel about
Pet buff in the altar requiring Manticore Eye
Piercing buff requiring Royal Jelly
Do you think its fair
Yeah I was gonna mention that too, it also rewards those who can play long sessions or having the game on 24/7 (this is how everyone has 45 000 hours Grim Dawn playtime hehe)
