Backing up your character

Hello all…

New here and new to the game. Love it.

I couldnt get a simple answer out of Steam on which files I need to copy to save my characters ( and save to a thumb drive) in case my computer dies or I need to re-install the game completely…whatever the reason. I want to copy them and drop them back in on a new installation if need be.

Steam was incapable of handling this simple request so Im coming here to this forum. Steams’ backup utility seems to want to back up 4 gigs of data and Im not sure why that is. The reason for a backup is to make sure you dont lose your character. Thats a small file in most cases…not 4 gigs. The game can be re-installed from the Library at any time so Im not sure why they want to back up what seems to be the whole game.

Honestly, I wish there was a way I could bypass Steam and have a copy directly downloaded to my computer from Crate. Essentially Steam holds the game hostage with their launcher integrated into the .exe and I hate this. You cant play unless the game is up to date but how would they know this if Im offline? I hate Steam.

Anyway, I hope the character files arent tied somehow to the entire installation…a Steam poison pill.

Thanks for any help.

I run Windows 10

This should answer most of your questions.

Edit: First! :stuck_out_tongue:

Nice post/thread very helpful, thank you!

Welcome to Grim Dawn and the forums.

Here’s a thread with the locations of both Steam cloud saves on your PC and Local saves, what all the files are so you can keep your shared stash and blueprints and also how to swap from Cloud to Local saves if you wish.

Hope this helps.

Edit…ninja’d

Thank you so much for the replies. If only Steam was as professional.

Hi…Just following through on the advice here. When I navigate to My Documents the path stops after Grim Dawn with a settings folder and thats it.

C:\Users\username\Documents\my games\Grim Dawn\Settings

I dont see the save\main folders there. Do I just add the save\main folders there from the Steam folder?

And just to confirm…after I do this transfer from the Steam folder ( if thats what Im doing because I see no save folder in Documents) will I go to Documents from then on to periodically make copies to save? Im guessing with the Cloud turned off it will then default to my local save folder in Documents.

If you’re using cloud saving then I’m not sure the game saves localling as well. In which case you’d need to find the Steam save file.

As for non-Steam, the game is also available on GOG so you could buy it there. And of course, once the game is finally finished and doesn’t get updated any more you can play offline on Steam. Heck you could do that now if you want, just going back online when a new patch/update is released to download and install that then go offline again.

You can turn off steam cloud save first, both in game and in steam. Then you create new character called abcd

Then you search for the folder _abcd in your operating system file/folder manager

This should give you information on where your local saves are supposed to be.

After you have done this, you can start moving your characters from the steam cloud save folder.

This is not what he is asking for, he is asking in what folder the locally saved chars should be in. He did not seem to find folder
C:\Users\username\Documents\my games\Grim Dawn\save
and said it appears that
C:\Users\username\Documents\my games\Grim Dawn\Settings
is the only sub-folder he/she has in
C:\Users\username\Documents\my games\Grim Dawn\

Steam cloud saved characters are saved on the local computer and are synced with Steam cloud. This thread is a good read on that matter http://www.grimdawn.com/forums/showthread.php?t=20752

Just make sure the Cloud saving is turned off in Grim Dawn’s settings otherwise the game will continue to place the saves in the Steam location.

Yes it does. All Steam cloud saves (regardless of game) are saved locally on your PC in the Steam save folder.

Thank you to all for your help. This should do it i think. Also, the person that suggested GOG Games, thank you. The middle finger for Steam. I think Im going to delete my Steam account and re-buy at GOG. People gotta stand up to the arrogance and control of Steam. Glad this company is doing so.
