Barn vs hunting and fish buildings

Once you build a cowshed, you don’t have to worry so much about fishermen and hunters.
1 barn with fully loaded cows will give you 1000-2000 meat per year, tons of skins and fat, cows don’t have to be assigned large areas for fields and grass is eaten very slowly. And after the cows, the fertility for the fields is enormous. I have now combined gardening and cows in one place, until I checked if the cows will fertilize the fruit, but it’s also interesting to know. In other words, 1 barn replaces 10 hunting buildings for me, which always have to reassign areas, which is a bit annoying. Yes, there are disadvantages in the barn, they need to be fed. But this turns into a huge plus in the form of milk and then cheese. I think it’s kind of cheating lol

Thats the way to go: retire all your hunters and fisherman.
When i did that, i replaced them all by foragers, that when combining with arborists, give you an enormous amount of natural food. Had no problem with lack of food so far.

That’s why only a few continue to hunt in our modern society. It’s not cheating, it’s just … like that.

THe only problem (in game) currently with not hunting and fishing… is your cow meat all comes at the same time. This causes much of it to spoil. Therefore you still need hunting and fishing throughout the year to bring in fresh meat

… or … make it super ultra inefficient so that barns slaughtering lasts the whole year.

… like having your “meat” root cellar on the other side of the map … it forces the “herder” to bring the meat on the other side of the map before slaughtering an other cow (because his storage is full).

Note: only a theoretical workaround … haven’t actually tried it yet.

or build more smokers

I just build like 5-6 smokers near my cowbarn and stick a wood splitter next to them. I haven’t gotten micromanage-y enough to tweak my food production to perfection but so far so good.

exactly. I retired all my hunters and fishermen once i had like 10 barns and 20 smokehouses

I like to use my hunters as backup protection around my mines/work camps. On the other hand, fishermen bring in a different type of food that can help houses level up.

Fish still counts in the same category than meat (if I’m not mistaken).

Well crud. I believe you are correct sir. I just noticed a house with greens and beans but only had 1 type of food for increasing the house’s level. Thanks for encouraging me to do the science.
