Basic questions

I didnt use a gd mod before, and wonder how it works - didnt find any infos on it, so if there is a guide that answers the questions below please post the link

  • how do mods work with existing characters?
    – do they work at all?
    – do i have to create new chars for mods?
    – what if a mod makes permanent changes to a char, do they carry over to vanilla?
    — is there a difference between receiving stuff through a mod, that exists in vanilla, and mod only stuff?
    — what happens if i uninstall a mod that changed a character?
  • are overhaul mods replacing vanilla or enhancing it?
  • is there anything you have to watch out for when using mods that introduce new classes?
    – as above, are new classes added to vanilla or do i have to star a separate game?

It’s all entirely separate, unless you go through the hassle of symlinking your characters.

Most mods don’t work with existing characters, make a new character if you want to avoid issues.

Changes made by character editors can be used in vanilla, I don’t know about mods that contain new content like skills and classes though.

I don’t know if I’m understanding the “receiving stuff through a mod” question correctly, but if you use a tool to craft an illegitimate item, as long as the created item has prefixes that exist in vanilla, the created item will be indistinguishable from a legitimate one. Artificially crafted items can be used in vanilla with no consequence, and I use them all the time to test builds and items. GDstash is my preferred tool for stash management. Tools like GDstash are different from actual mods because they don’t actually adjust the game’s base code - they only adjust files which are locally stored on your computer (item and character saves)

Uninstalling a mod will probably cause problems if you attempt to load that modded character, especially if that character is a class that doesn’t exist in vanilla.

Overall, modding is really simple, just try not to transfer vanilla characters to a mod or vice-versa. It’s definitely worth trying and is practically zero-risk as long as you follow the modder’s instructions.

Thanks for the explanations!
