Beronath is too much

I’ve noticed it seems easier of late to be randomly 1-shot by shotgun effects (e.g. Mogdrogen v1, Wights, Ilgor, Salazar etc), but with Beronath I found that it seems you can get double/triple tapped by the doombolts at once if they overlap due to that wide hit area.

Still got the bastard in Ascendant with my janky Veilwalker (Veilwalker, Level 100 (GD 1.3.0.0) - Grim Dawn Build Calculator) though, so overall difficulty isn’t horrible (except how much black goo ends up everywhere and if I have the camera zoomed in the allies on the pillars get in the way).

not sure if you can beat master of flesh or korvaak with 700 armour and 10k health in ultimate just by being “skilfull”, but Beronath you can :stuck_out_tongue:

Installed the 3.0.5 patch…
looks like someone behind the scenes swung the nerf bat repeatedly in a mildly psychotic rage! (less health, less pools, accurate lightning crap, slower movement, fewer/shorter chaos spit-shards).

Shame the actual XP from Beronath is laughable, but at least I have completed the game on normal difficulty (& expansions) and can move on.

Thank you.

Just to add, I kind off dislike the immunity phases Beronath has during this fight (e.g. the flying phase). It does not really feel like Grim Dawn but more like TQ2.

Just pwned his face in elite. I had to die twice tho.

First one, I wasn’t fast enough with the evade, or leap, or rip & tear. Worst part was the long walk back and having to use the horn again. Sucks this boss resets.

Second one, I was only maybe 5% away from killing him in the second phase. Yeah. I got impatient and he blasted me good with that fan attack on the ground.

I will say this tho, I am not looking forward to facing him in ultimate.

Here is a player I know beating him on a glass cannon in Ascendant difficulty with a fully juiced altar. Note how he takes very little damage throughout the entire fight.

Seriously, watch the video. I’m sorry but you’re just not as good at the game as you think.
I know players able to do similar on melee builds.

You are in a bubble telling yourself, “I know I’m a good player, but this is whooping my ass, therefore it must be unfair/poorly tuned.”

I invite you to consider that you have done a poor job learning the fight, a poor job learning to pilot your character, and that if you correct this, you’ll find this fight is at most, moderately challenging. Frankly, if you learn how the boss works, it’s a cakewalk.

I happily concede to the complainers here that the newest expansion has added a lot of challenge back to Grim Dawn… but before FoA ultimate difficulty was super super super super super easy once you learned all the tools available to you.

I am not a young man, I have very limited time to play as I have a family, and I don’t find anything about this to be particularly challenging. The rain of doom bolts he casts is the only real danger.

Nerfing this fight would be an affront to all the players who want fights where you just… need to pay a little bit of attention at least.

I also acknowledge that your feedback is of course your genuine reaction and feeling toward the fight, but I think the attitude of “it’s too hard for me so it’s bad” is super shitty and narrow in view.

While I fully agree with your take here adoomgod, I think referencing a completely OP build (giga-damage Harbinger Mystic) to show how easy the fight is might be a bit disingenuous.

@the8anarchist made an excellent video on how to easily defeat Beronath with a low Health Ember’thil Pyromancer that is highly educational for people struggling with this fight.

Defeating Beronath is not difficult by any means and I think it shouldn’t be changed at all except fixing the old TQ lightning bug that has been identified.

Is there a pattern to the doom bolt madness?

Not 100% sure but right seconds where u stand, it picks doom bolt location.

Basically, if you stood in B spot and A C D where free… most probably the next doom bolt appearance will be right in spot B and thes rest around it.

However, you guys keep sayin hitbox of the targeting area is off so I dunno about that part.

I am fine with the doom bolts, but it just seems too random and too many idk hard to know where to you know run/step aside. Done the fight about 80 times now

I play a retal Warlord. Beronath was very frustrating at first, now I really enjoy the fight and I think it’s actually one of the best ones.

There were a few gotchas:

  • Some of the pools are actually triggered by projectiles, so when the puke starts I actually run into an existing pool. I could not see any projectile at first, being melee, so I learnt this from the community.
  • The chaos storm is actually fairly simple to deal with once you understand it. All the telegraphs appear before any lightning strikes. So I just wait for the second one to appear, then start moving right before I feel the third one is about to pop. Result: all 3 lightning strikes are all at the same spots, no need for crazy dodging. Also, Beronath falls down as soon as the striking starts, so I try to go back to hitting it right away
  • The ground claws are scary but easy to avoid
  • The chaos bolts which appear regularly have a very tiny radius, so getting to safety is pretty easy

I have not tried it yet with other ranged or caster builds.

I was dumb enough to try Beronath on Ascendant at first, which was very punitive as far as learning its mechanics went. Ultimate helped, now I pretty much always clear it.

Well. Sometimes I get distracted and forget about the claws.

i feel like this video showcases my main gripe with the fight beautifully as melee
look at the downtime/time spent not fighting the boss to avoid/“run from stuff” - with less airtime you could actually utilize the positioning and avoid mechanics to still get hits in, instead it’s run, wait, run, attack, rinse repeat, that’s too little attacking in a fight just for picking melee. It’s an ARPG not an RRPG :scorv:

The build was OP in terms of damage which affects kill time but doesn’t change that it was a glass cannon that took very little damage. And yes, if further proof is needed with suboptimal builds, definitely can provide.

Yeah, anarchist’s video showcases my point as well. I was just being lazy and didn’t want to dig around for more videos when I had recently seen that one and had it handy.

I mainly liked the video because it showed how good piloting around his very slow telegraphed attacks will get you through unscathed.

I agree with you but the video with Harbinger Doom Bolt is not a good example. The most OP build of 1.3.0.0 damagewise.

And the build on the video is not defensively bad. The only thing it has bad is lower life. But it has maxxed Possession and 32 % phys res. It also has 23 % DR on onslaught. How is that build defensively weak? The only weaker stat is its life and it is still not that bad considering the other defenses.

Build can also kill from distance. And the only reason why it has lower health is that giga OA. Completely OP otherwise.

ok I need to watch this

If the storm is your issue, then yeah. But it’s honestly a troll.

It pops up all over the place if and only if, as soon as it starts, you move. If you stay still, then all the telegraphs seem to overlay each other. Then you take a step to the left and it will just strike three times at the same spots.

If you move,

  • The whole map is telegraphed
  • The screen is about to be unreadable
  • You’re running around like a wild chicken while Beronath readies its next skill
  • btw you got sundered
  • did you see the claw marks on the gr- naaah you didn’t

Stay still, take a step left, rush the big guy.

That’s what I did with my pierce/bleed werewolf (Primalist). I ran around avoiding all the aoe stuff and his jump attack. I waited till he did his fan attack twice, then I charged in and did a short dps burst. It was very rinse and repeat until his is dead. Honestly, I would think any strong dot build would do well since you have to do hit and run tactics. I haven’t tried range or pet build yet. I would think the range build do better than the pet build, since there is too much ground stuff going on for a pet build to its thing.

Yeah. there is that too. That almost killed me in elite mode.

I’m okay with Beronath on Ultimate\Ascendancy, killed it by weakest build with 16k hp on Battlemage that even didn’t have all RR and items, yes it was ultra hard, but mine build was far from perfect either. But the one point about this boss is really disturbing me, Black Pools covers whole arena and doesn’t dissapear, and maybe for players with not big dps or those who are not very confident in kite - such long duration and size of that debuff can be a disaster.
