Best 2017 games....Thusfar

Everyone loves their lists. And I often forget, by December, which games were even released this year. Guess that’s part of playing games from decades ago in the mean time as well. Lose total track of time…plus I’m getting old so memory sucks at times hehe. For those who need help remembering check out https://www.vg247.com/2017/06/22/video-game-release-dates-2017/

What has everyone’s GOTY been thusfar? What were your biggest surprises? Biggest dissapointments? Best sound, best looking and even…the most atmospheric/immersive game you guys have played so far this year. Also which game(s) are you looking forward too in the remainder of 2017?

For me its only PC games so that narrows down the potential candidates. Seeing how the announcement list of games for all platforms was almost non-existent at the start of the year I was worried. We’ve gotten a lot of interesting game releases none the less. Made it a little bit more exciting this way as well in some cases. Getting stuff you didn’t expect yet was a lot of fun.
-Torment Tides of Numenera
-Expeditions: Vikings
-Battle Brothers
-Night in the Woods
-Mass Effect Andromeda
-Nier Automata
-Prey
-Hollow Knight
-Tales of Berseria
-Styxx: Shards of Darkness
-Has-Been Heroes
-Bayonetta
-Vanquish
-Wonder Boy
-Dawn of War 3
-Strafe

My GOTY candidate:
-Nier Automata
It has atmosphere, interesting story that really comes through after the multiple run throughs, great aesthetics and overall theme accompanied with some of the best sound tracks.

Surprise thusfar:
-Wonder Boy
I simply wasn’t even expecting this one untill a few days before release. Since I played it a fair amount on my Master System as a kid it was an instant buy. Gameplay still holds up and the art style is just really well made. Lots of fun to be had if you’re feeling nostalgic with some mild challenge here and there.

Other surprises were the Platinum ports of Bayonetta and Vanquish. They’re both awesome too play. Since I’m not a console gamer I never had the pleasure of going through them in the past. A welcome addition to the PC Master Race

Biggest Dissapointment:
-It is easy to say Andromeda, but for those who read my “review” while playing through the game see that there are enjoyable aspects. It lacked a lot of fleshing out of those aspects making the game often feel incomplete. Other disappointment was Dawn of War 3 which didn’t really shape up to my personal expectations. Difficult to choose for me between the two of them.

Best Sound:
-Hands down that has to be Nier Automata. At times it was there very subtly adding to the overall atmosphere and other times full blown epicness to fit the weird alien feel of the world you’re in.

Best Looking:
-For me this doesn’t mean the most hyper realistic graphics, but overall aesthetics. Basically the graphical style and how consistent it is through the game and the way it all comes together. In that sense Night in the Woods just has a quirky style and looks amazing. Hollow Knight comes really close though.

Most Immersive:
That would’ve been Prey for me. The mimicks make you cautious and paranoid very early on in the game. Especially if you try a stealth/ghost run through the game. The eerie silent space station with the occasional sounds to get you on edge while you’re exploring every nook of the station.

Only problem I had was the death&respawn mechanic which takes you out of it all and breaks the immersion. Would’ve liked to see something more similar to the original pray where death gets you into a mini-game, depending how you perform you get some health/resource, before jumping back into the game. That would’ve given at least some repercussion to your “failure” instead of making everything seem pointless. You really have to force yourself across this hurdle to keep enjoying the game fully imo.

Games I’m still looking forward too in 2017:
-Pyre
-Hellblade: Senua’s Sacrifice (already pre-ordered)
-Xcom 2: War of the chosen (Expansion Pack. a must-have for me)
-Divinity Original Sin 2 (already have it on GoG and going to co-op on stream)
-Cuphead
-Total War: Warhammer 2 (still need to reserve time for the first one)
-Battle Chasers (loved the comics, love turn based strategy…must have)
-Destiny 2 (maybe)
-Elex
-Wolfenstein 2 (the reboot series so far is awesome, but short. will definitely grab this however)
-Call of Duty: WW2 (I skipped almost all CoD’s after the third one. So seeing a new WW2 themed shooter might convince me to grab at least this one)
-Ni No Kuni 2
-Vampyr (will wait for some reviews before grabbing this)

  • .hack//G.U. Last Recode (loved the hack// anime series, never enjoyed the games. so will watch for some reviews first)
-Agony (looks sick, but whether it will be also fun??)
-Call of Ctulhu: Official Video Game
-Frozen Synapse 2 (hell yeah. the first was awesome)
-Ori and the Will of the Wisps (if its anything like the forest count me in)
-Hand of Fate 2 (enjoy such card collecting games with ARPG mechanics, just hope it works smoother and it should be great fun)

A much longer list then expected. As said start of the year it looked like we’d get almost nothing this year. Was thinking about cleaning up my backlog instead. Oh well

Fire Emblem Echoes: Shadows of Valentia was surprisingly excellent. I was expecting an O.K. reimagining of Fire Emblem Gaiden, but Nintendo clearly put a ton of effort into making this remake awesome: the story is well-told and keeps you interested from start to finish, the voice acting is really well done, the music is great, sound design is great, Gaiden’s quirky gameplay design that makes it the black sheep of the series is intact but the game still fits modern standards well, and dungeons are fun to explore. This is a must-own for anyone who likes tactics games and owns a 3DS system.

The only downsides to this game are the minimal amount of postgame content (the extra dungeon is great but there’s not much to do once you’ve finished it once, and fuuuuuuuuuck trying to farm for the special weapons) and unit growth rates are generally bad, meaning you won’t get amazing level ups very often.

Fire Emblem Heroes - aka a mobile phone gacha game - is actually good. The game itself is fun to play and it’s great nostalgia for Fire Emblem nerds. Plus Intelligent Systems are supporting FEH extremely well by implementing new features, fixing problems, and keeping the game alive with events. I hate the concept of gacha games but this one is really fun to play; You can play the game for free and have a blast with it, since you’re given plenty of free resources.

Bayonetta came to the PC. Pleasant surprise, loved that game.

ATLUS is remaking Shin Megami Tensei: Strange Journey. The original was great albeit a bit outdated, so it’s nice to see this one get some love.

Gamefreak is remaking Pokemon Sun & Moon already. Okay then. Maybe they’ll actually implement a decent postgame leveling area this time around?

Bubsy is getting a reboot which made me lose faith in humanity a little. JK that shit is going to be game of the century

Nintendo announces Metroid: Samus Returns! Finally, a 2D Metroid game!

Discovered that Metroid: Samus returns is being developed by MercurySteam - aka the company that hammered the final nail in Castlevania’s coffin - which means the upcoming 2.5D Metroid game is probably going to suck ass. The trailer featured a lot of annoying AAA elements (like pointless unskippable cutscenes, tutorial text, and other crap that doesn’t belong in a fast-paced platformer) which instantly killed my hype for this.

I’d say that (almost) every AAA game is disappointing because that’s the nature of the industry nowadays, but it’s difficult to be disappointed when you don’t give a shit anymore. They get an honorable mention, though.

Torment: Tides of Numenera, from what I can glean from reviews, turned out to be a boring storybook. The Bard’s Tale isn’t looking very promising either, unfortunately. Really hoping that Wasteland 3 doesn’t disappoint…

Regalia: Of Men and Monarchs, from what I can glean from reviews, turned out to be unfortunately shallow. Which is a shame, because it looked like an interesting mashup of Fire Emblem & Persona. Oh well!

Pit People is still in early access, but the core game turns out to be just o.k.; once the humor wears off it’s a boring tactics game.

Ever Oasis wasn’t all that great, apparently. Pretty, but flawed gameplay. Still kinda tempted to pick this one up just because it looks relaxing.

CrossCode, hands down, in all categories. Best early access game on Steam as of now. The full game won’t release until later this year and I’m super excited to see how the finished product turns out.

In the remainder of 2017 I’m looking forward to:

[ul][li]Grim Dawn’s first expansion, of course! The two new masteries look amazing and I’m looking forward to the world expanding in a direction away from the Northwest (fucking finally).[/li]
[li]CrossCode’s full release.[/li]
[li]Etrian Odyssey V. All of the EO games are excellent (except MD) and this one looks even better. Took ATLUS USA long enough to announce a localization, but at least it’s coming over.[/li]
[/ul]
That’s seriously it. Nintendo and ATLUS are the only two big companies that actually produce good games anymore, and the occasional indie developer will make something awesome.

Haven’t really gotten much that’s new in 2017.

I guess my GOTY would actually be a DLC for Dark Souls III, being The Ringed City. Exceptional atmosphere, story, gameplay, music, etc. It really has it all and was an excellent send-off to the series.

Not far behind would be Hollow Knight, Rivals of Aether, and Endless Space 2 which, despite its many bugs, is a very solid strategy game nonetheless.

Looking forward to Wolfenstein, GDX, and Factorio’s release out of Early Access.

My list isn’t that big:

GD expansion
South Park fractured but whole
State of Decay 2 (but I freaking hate it that it’s Windows 10 / xbone only)
CoD WW2
Sniper ghost warrior 3
Wolfenstein

Best moba mobile game I have ever played! check it out guys. https://youtu.be/DL7UFlGC-SM

Planet of Heroes

A hard thread to answer for me because I like to play games at my own pace, so I don’t have much interest on news (especially because most are about AAA games and the AAA industry is mostly crap nowadays). And also I’m with the classic “Steam cleanup” problem, where I got so many things to play from sales that it’s hard to keep up.

I do have a small list of recent stuff though to talk about.

My biggest disappointment would be, like you mentioned, Dawn of War 3. I ignored the early negativity this game got because they were 40k fanboys whinning “this is not grimdark anymore” and shit like that, nothing that is valid as constructive criticism (although I can agree that making Gabriel Angelos do a high jump on fricking Terminator Armor is kinda stupid). But the more they show about the core gameplay, the less excited I got. Didn’t buy the game in the end, and I don’t have plans to do it later.

As for things that I looking foward to, well, not that much actually. There’s the Grim Dawn expansion, Sonic Mania, Rock of Ages 2: Bigger & Boulder, and South Park: Fractured but Whole. (but for the latter I’ll wait for a huge sale since Ubisoft games are overpriced)

Looking forward to:
-Cuphead - not much to say, just look at the art style, so awesome!
-Call of Ctulhu: Official Video Game - love me some lovecraft, loved the last call of chthulu game despite the negativity

Somewhat interested:
-Divinity Original Sin 2 - haven’t beaten the first yet…
-Destiny 2 - MMO?.. meh.
-Elex
-Vampyr
-Agony

Disappointed:
Vikings: Wolves of Midgard - was a fun little game but not worth the money, far from what a hc arpg should be)

Awesome:
DOMINA - not much to say, very fun ‘gladiator sim’ type game with great music

D3 Rise of the Necromancer, definitely.

Ha, no, what a joke.

Still Grim Dawn actually. Looking forward to playing Doom finally once I can dl all 70GB. Been playing Transistor which is fun and great art/story. I’m on Linux, my choices are limited :stuck_out_tongue:

Also playing Overload early access, looking forward to that release later in the year.

Also Project CARS 2. I’m on the forum and it’s shaping up really well.

Some games I had totally forgotten about, but will get as well…

Xenonauts 2. I am an xcom like fanatic after all. Phoenix Point looks cool as well, but doubt it’ll release this year.

Abandon Ship. If you like Faster then Light then this might be up your alley as well. Only difference is that it looks better and takes place on ship vs ship fights on open sea in different weather types.

Dauntless. Not sure about this. Looks fun to do co-op with 3 other friends. Looks bit monster hunter-esque where you hunt down gigantic monsters. Other then that not clear what else there is to do.

Overhand. Turn based tactical survival game. Not a fan of survival stuff, but this looks nice. Guess it’ll be a bit like Neo Scavenger.

At this point I just look on playthroughs on u2be.
What I’d play right now is The Surge that looks like Nier non-anime version.

Went through my steam library and I saw that I haven’t bought a single thing released in 2017. A couple early access games did officially release this year but since I got them in previous years they don’t really count.

Christ I’m getting old :stuck_out_tongue:
