I tried everything you can name. UPnP, Defered Rendering, FPS caps, firewall, updated drivers, updated redist, mpo disabled…
It seems to be a problem since 2016, and no solution works. This is the only game that has issues.
Also commonly happens if multiple people are in devil’s crossing for example.
I did notice that it happens if you move your mouse once you load into the game.
If I load into main menu without doing anything with my mouse then it doesnt crash or black screen, as soon as I move my mouse the game stops responding or goes black screen.
Restarting the game doesn’t fix it, but restarting steam like 3-4 times in a row seems to randomly work.
It’s a problem with single player too, so not exclusive to MP.
I’d send logs and help devs fix it, but this game has no useful logs it seems (othwerwise the issue would be fixed 10 years ago)
It seems to not happen on DX9 GD, so far. Nevermind, it does.
To reproduce the black screen bug in the main menu:
-Boot the game and don’t touch anything
-Once the main menu loads and the character is present, you can use your arrow keys to select a character without issue
-If you move your mouse even a little bit the game freezes immediately, either leading to a crash or black screen, it seems random
Any mod or external software installed? In my experience, “vanilla” GD doesn’t crash often, but while having mod installed or for example IA or DPYes in background, the number of crashes raise.
Alright I did more debugging and here’s some more info.
I had 4 mods: DPYes, Reshade, Rainbow Filter and GrimTex
After disabling Reshade the main menu freeze stopped happening (the one triggered by moving the mouse).
Now before we celebrate it must be noted:
This freeze can simply not happen even when having reshade
People with clean installs of the game had black screen issues
Friends I play with that don’t use any mods also had black screen and crashing issues
This is an issue from 2016
Multiple people being in Devil’s Crossing causing black screens is surely not connected to Reshade, especially considering it was reported on vanilla clients and that both players experience it at the same time even when one player is fully vanilla
I will report back if it keeps happening, which is most likely will eventually.
Edit: Also a possible ReShade fix for those that really want to use it: Once installing it to the x64 exe path, rename dxgi.ddl to d3d11.dll in the x64 folder.
Edit 2: ReShade is again to blame and the dxgi renaming doesn’t help.
For instance, I personally think that the biggest culript here is DPYes, at least in my experience and with my hardware some versions completely make the game unplayable (black screen every time the game is lunched andter a couple of seconds)
