I’ve tried reading into as much as I could on this topic, nothings seemed to have worked. I can’t run repair.exe, it says to check file permissions, everything looks on the up and up, but I don’t really know what permissions I would need to add. Everything there is checked as allow, except special permissions, but I can’t seem to change that.
Game starts up with a black screen, and just hangs. Can’t alt tab, need to logout to close it, it totally locks everything up. I’ve been hoping an update would fix this, but clearly not. I don’t know if I need to fix the settings or what, I really need help here.
I feel you’re pain. I have just bought the game tried every fix under the sun and the game black screens every time. I have great hardware plus I’m a it tech and have no issues with my system. I honestly can’t figure out what is the problem, have been wrecking my head trying to fix it. Funny thing is I pirated the game to test it and the pirated version works. Just not my steam version
Pirated copies hide extra crap in the hidden AppData folder and places like that. Ensure you root out these files and rid your system of them. Years ago someone else had a similar issue because of this. I’m going to assume there is a conflict occurring.
Cheers for the reply. But I only downloaded the pirated version after I downloaded the version I own, so wouldn’t be the issue. I just tried it to see if it would work. No matter what I have done I can’t get it to work might just need to get the gog version see if it works.
… and force reinstall both DirectX and the C++ Redists. If you have a 3rd party AV, exclude GD’s install folder from the scans. DON’T just put it into “Game Mode”. Actually exclude the folders.
I run both the Steam and GOG versions of the game with no issue.
I tried this before I’ll attempt it again and get back to you. I have ran the game flawlessly myself on the same system. I’m using a different steam account that is the only difference. Also my pc has been formated and basically new. The thing is the game started first I played the intro worked fine. Tried to start it the next day black screen has plagued me since lol
Yeah as soon as I launch the game. If I change a few settings I can change it from being… Not responding to, seeing the cursor from in game and it just stays black
Have tried that multiple times. I also changed my option txt to my old save didn’t help either. Also tried deleting it options, changing resolutions, changing graphic settings to low-very high. I’ve done pretty much every fix I could try even older drivers and psyx
The built in crash report doesn’t even work. I have tried using the exe in the main folder does the same thing. Changing certain settings in the option text can give me different results on how the game opens ie… Not responding black screen need to force close with task manager,or black screen with cursor from the game also need to force close. If I turn off antivirus crash report will work once. But I only use windows defender don’t believe in 3rd party. I’ve excluded the folder from defender with no avail that was my first thing to do
3 years later and this pops off. I did end up figuring it out. I didn’t pirate the game at any point. Later on I can look into what I did to fix it. It may have had to do with an issue with my antivirus but I think I’d whitelisted it so I think I’d resolved that as being a possible cause.
…and then kill GD’s process from under the drop down. You will also likely see Crash Reporter listed under it. Once you kill GD in this way then the reporter should appear but if you kill the Main GD thread without expanding the dropdown then chances are high that you are killing all processes tied to GD, which includes the Crash Reporter.

Realised as I sent it said 3 years ago I think ant virus might be the culprit. I have excluded my entire steam folder ran a repair but still nothing. I think I’ll have to re-download the game for the 5th time
I’m kinda thinking it is this as well, especially considering that it ran fine initially and then, boom, out of nowhere blackscreening. That’s usually a sign of an antivirus silently sticking it’s nose where it don’t belong… or bad Windows or GPU driver updates that might have occurred.
I’m personally going to lean on it being the AV tho.
Yeah I think it’s the AV my drivers are all up to date I do that stuff for a living. It’s almost as if the exe has been stripped of privileges. The game loads to a black screen and I can see the cursor with the little hand from grim dawn menus, no sound no nothing. I’m glad the op got it to work least hope for me yet .
