[BUG?] Editor: black region and tga file

Basically when you zoom out too much inside the “Editor mode”, the map gets darker and when you rebuild the pathing/region in “Layout mode” the region itself gets completely black and the tga file (which gives you the “image” of the local minimap) also gets completely black.

This is VERY annoying mostly if you have already done quite a lot of work and/or have to zoom out for bigger zones.

Anyone else got the same “bug”?
Did anyone else solve this issue?

Got the same issue.

I hope they’ll implement a fix soon then

I had this issue and solved it.

I basically scrapped everything and set the paths of Asset Manager to default.

(Steam\SteamApps\Common\Grim Dawn)

Then I open the editor and create the world in the source directory (NOT in maps), and then I create the regions and I save them in source as well (NOT in maps). Now it seems to work ok, as far as I can tell, I’ve got 7 128x128 regions and all is well.

The problem I’m having now is that the Asset Manager crashes when I try to build the mod. (After auto-creating the asset from the world, I press F7, it says it’s working, I can see the messages that say how much time it took for each step and then it crashes.)

Edit: Oh, and the message “This level has been modified outside of the editor. Do you want to reload it? Selecting yes will discard any unsaved changes.” I don’t know what it means or what it does, but it pops up all the time while I’m rotating the world and zooming in and out.

Edit2: Just had another instance of this, but restarting windows seemed to fix it. Puzzled.

I tried your method but it doesn’t work.

I still get the “black map” when I zoom out of the zone…

So there’s no point (for me at least) to change the paths…

Edit:

  1. add region, go to editor mode, add terrain and everything’s fine:

  1. layout mode, build pathing and map and the “default terrain” gets black:

  1. this happens in editor mode when I zoom out “too much”:

  1. this happens when I zoom out “too much” and then I zoom in:

(kinda funny that only the “high grass” maintains its original lightning)

Hm, try the other trick.

Create a new world, inside the map folder.

Create a new region, and make it 256x256. Exactly 256x256.

See if it works. If it works, import your older regions and build the puzzle. (Pull them to their right places, put large 256x256 to the side)

If it doesn’t work, I don’t know what else you could do. Oh, minimizing the editor window and bringing it back sometimes resolves 4).

Ok… it seems it’s a problem with 256x256 regions:

While I have regions smaller than 256x256 I can zoom out “as much as a want”.

Does it work?

Without the 256x256 regions yes…

Great! So… is that a bug, or a feature? Is the editor affected by the load distances of the database?

Nope, already tested that

It is a bug with 256x256 regions only. I recommend using 128x128 regions as this isn’t likely to be a priority fix.

Ah, good to know! So, the bottom line is we don’t use 256x256 ever?

Edit: Yep.

Thanks Zantai for the official reply.

At least we know it’s a bug and we have to wait for a fix if we want to use 256x256.

For optimal load/performance, you’ll want to use 128x128 regions in a staggered grid (ie. rows are offset by half a region) anyway.

EDIT: given the benefits of using smaller regions and the issues with 256x256 regions, we are going to disable the option to create regions of that size in a future update. Any existing 256x256 regions will be unaffected.
