I posted this on the GD reddit too, but I’ll put it here for visibility and hopefully thoughtfull comments!
Context: Alwys wanted to play a Mortar Trap Build and there seems to be some buffs recently or not so recently,
last time I tried it, the Trap behaved rather obnoxiously but also I didnt try it on higher level.
Context 2: Furthest I’ve gotten is level 65 and finished veteran with all possible side content.
So I have no experience with crucible or higher difficulties.
I now put together something in Grim Tools (Theoretical, since I dont have a single piece of that equipment)
with some core items, some slots and all the augments are empty yet, here goes what is needed for resists etc.
Most important is probably the Dagallon’s Set since it provides huge boost to Mortar Trap alone (Most importan for summoning limit I guess)
and also reistance reduction to Word of Pain.
Cant submit a link to my Grim Tools sheet yet, not enough posts -
Idea is to set up traps and debuff via Word of Pain, Flashbang and BWC. Together with the Movement speed reduction of “The Big One” I hope that it slows down fast monsters enough but I dont know.
Apart from that its mainly kiting and watching the world burn and explode
So Questions:
Has anyone recently had experience with Mortar Trap? Playable?
Am I missing something obvious? (Please keep it basic, I concider myself a noob still :D)
The Set seems awesome, but dual wielding pistols might not be the best Option?! No CR from a Caster Offhand, No defenses from a shield… Alternatives are welcome
Leveling Plan is probably run with maxed Word of pain through Veteran up to the point where I get enough +Demo stuff to have a higher potential summoning limit on Mortar Trap and then switch over, plausible?
never played a mortar trap build, so can’t add much, but i saw an interesting MI drop off some dude in act 6 which would seem interesting for your build:
plopping down the mortars much quicker (and getting one additional mortar) sounds like a very strong bonus for such a build.
you’re not going to have that endgame set while you’re levelling that toon and judging from the skills, it’s meant as a dw gunslinger set anyway, so you could farm that MI offhand towards the end of your normal/veteran playthough and it should help quite a lot on subsequent elite & ultimate playthroughs (of course you can also farm an upgraded higher level version of the MI once you get to final act elite and later ultimate)
I was messing around with trying to make a purifier mortar build. I leveled it to 51 so far through using word of pain and grenado for bosses and such.
I am not sure I like dagallon’s set the most. The helmet is awesome for sure and there is a necklace that can give word of pain elemental resist reduction. I will edit my post once I have a chance to give the item datavase a better look.
If you want to go all-out on Mortars (and support them with something else), good endgame items other than Terrnox’s Arcane Tome are Dagallon’s Faceguard and the Conduit of Destructive Whispers as they add to your summon limit even more.
This is what I’ve came up with for an endgame build that supports Mortars with Rune of Kalastor and am working towards. Good MIs or a resistance prefix on the amulet would mean I could shift components/augments around for more offensive bonuses.
If you want to use the Dagallon set with the two pistols, you’ll need at least one point in ranged expertise in order to dual wield the pistols. Gear wise though, it will be easier to get the Terrnox’s tomb anyways.
Investing the thermite mines for the fire resist reduction will be huge. For whatever reason grimdawntools and the old grimcalc do show that reduction.
I would suggest 1 point in canister bomb and 3 into the modifier to help with crowd control so the mortar s can blast non-moving targets.
Points in vindictive flame also help for the + total speed. will help with mobility moving around while MT does it’s magic.
Okay, I went back and fixed my devotion set up and skill allocation.

[li]With the medal and amulet I plan to use I am going to turn word of pain into a debuff skill and not really a focus for the damage. With my set up word of pain is at max radius and gives - 32 target elemental resistance, -10% elemental resistance, and - 50 target defensive ability.[/li]
[/ul] I then utilize Ulto’s devotion proc and aura of censure for further elemental resist reduction. Wayward soul and giant’s blood are there for the heals, the harp is in there for some general stats and energy maintenance. Flashbang provides some soft cc and reduces enemy defensive ability further, canister bomb provides some cc. I generally avoid thermite mines because of wonky targeting at times. This set up grants a 4 summon limit and short cd for mortar traps.
