Cadence + Smite + Shield interaction

Out of all Warlords four WPS only Smite makes Cadence work as follows:

  • sometimes Cadence hits with both Shield and Weapon

    • and then you only need one another hit instead of two for next Cadence Hit
  • makes the Cadence icon not disappear - this is a bug because

    • the next hit is not Cadence but the one after that
  • Smite procs in between Cadence do not make it trigger faster

Need to watch in slow mo (Cadence hits are when the damage is big / there’s a red flash):

As a novice in Cadence I would expect it to overwrite Smite and any possible double stacks.
but it seems additional hit is sometimes stacked when Cadence triggers (and hits with the shield too then)
However when Smite hits normally in between Cadence hits - it doesn’t cause faster Cadence / double stack


My conclusion - Smite is great because it sometimes somehow procs on Cadence.
Not sure about damage but this makes Cadence procs more frequently but in a weird way.

Could someone with PhD in Cadence explain this in more details?
I stumbled across this when playing my Shield Warborn Oppressor
but now I’m planning some meme Chaos Shield Warlord and need to understand it better.

this is normal cadence interaction on dual wield,
i’m guessing because shields can now hit, or is counted as a weapon, s&b cadence adopts dual wield behaviour with Smite since your lefthand actually strikes the target

which def seem like a visual bug (since the dmg is there/normal), and you get the 3 hits for cadence as normal dual swing insta charge behavior
cadence is discharged on the hit+smite is triggered (normal cadence wps interaction) granting 1st cadence charge, → visual bug cadence icon is not discharged,
->2nd hit(first after smite visual) adds 2nd charge/cadence icon "but it was already there,
→ 3rd hit(2nd hit after smite) discharges cadence like normal

so basically, looks like normal cadence wps/dual wield interaction, aside from the visual cadence icon bug, cadence just adopts dual wield behaviour with shield using Smite

I thought maybe DW counts two times if it hits with two weapons in between Cadence procs
but I tested it and it doesn’t so it works precisely the same as Shield + Smite as you said.

ye, the dual wield mechanic, “free” chargeup only occurs when your right hand and left hand strikes the target on 3rd hit/cadence discharge itself, for melee,
any other instances of dual hand hits for melee on the target in the regular 2 chargeups grant normal 1 charge
so basically 50% of the time on dual wield melee, and now with smite and shield, you will get a free/1st cadence chargeup on the cadence hit itself
why visually on shield it doesnt’ discharge the cadence icon on smite+cadence hit itself i don’t know, since it discharges fine usually
suppose as long as the dmg is registered like here it’s fine for now atleast

The difference is I think in this case it scales with Smite % chance. I’ve just tested it and got 15% (8 / 52) experimental with 12 % smite. On the video I think it’s 50% (6 / 12) with Smite at 26% but I think it was just luck + small sample size

Since normally Cadence hits every 3 hits, with 30% Smite you hit every 0.3 * 2 + 0.7 * 3 = 2.7 hits on average
the ratio is (1 / 2.7) / (1 / 3) = 3 / 2.7 = 1.111... which means 11% more Cadence procs.
